So, you are dishing out information and calling people bad names. Typical, what happens when you lose your job and can't pay your bills, and believe me in this economy it can happen just as quick as anything. Not all people don't pay their bills because they are lying or stealing. Some people have ACTUAL, REAL financial problems. Some people through NO fault of their own fall on hard times. How DARE you call those people liers, cheaters, or thiefs. I truely hope for your sake you never go through what some people go through in life (Example: disability, severe illness, lose of job ect.) because if you did you might just end up as one of the scum bags (as you put it) who can NO longer afford to pay your debts. Then we will see how you feel about those words being tossed around so easily.

Ok sure this is from a company that claimed to CIBC calling my parents house looking for someone with the same last name? If you weren't  deceitful you may get some respect. Also I have called on my parents behalf to cease the calls from their house and the calls continue for someone who is related to them,  shame on you.

I have been harassed every day for over 8 years since my husbands sudden death.  He died without insurance and left me with debt I was unable to pay.  I am a senior and live on CPP and Old Age Pension I go to the food bank for food and live from Pension cheque to Pension cheque.  I live in a non profit building and have no assets NONE yet as many times as I have told these threatening callers this information my debt gets transferred from one collection agency to another.  Some days I think I will not wake up and have to listen to what amounts to as many as 3 to 5 calls a day including Sunday mornings.  I was not aware that they could not go after my pension I have been living in fear for over 8 years.  I will call Service Canada to confirm this info.  Thank You

I just got off the phone with a lady with the name of Paulina from CCL and although I owe money. She was very pleasant to talk to. I even enjoyed my conversation with her.
If you people borrowed money from a friend, wouldn't you want to pay it back? Why is a stranger or business any different? With the settlements they offer, the interest if removed as well as some of the purchases.
No ones likes to pay back or what not. After the money is gone, it's hard. Trust me I know. But what's the right thing to do? I'm dropping 15k for my mothers debt tomorrow. Think I enjoy that? Not so much. Grow up.

I worked for this company for many years. I feel it's important for you all to understand that management put so much pressure on their employees to collect or get fired. They are taken into a room every month and berated if they don't meet their targets. They work 10 hour shifts and still expected to work weekends. They expect you to live, eat and breath CCL. They break a lot of labor laws, not just collection laws. There is a very high turn over there. I'm a very polite, professional employee. I always treated the people I called with respect. But I found that they too could be rude and abusive. Imagine what your day would be like working for this company. Why did I stay so long? As a single mom I had to pay my own bills and was unable to look for something else due to the long hours I had to put in working for them. They finally pushed me to the point where I was so burned out I had to quit without notice. This company is all about greed. They don't care about your situation or about the people that work for them. Bottom line I would never work for another collection company again. It's too stressful. As far as paying your debt, bottom line is it's not your money. You have an obligation to pay it back. If there were no consequences for not paying your debt I don't think anyone would pay their loans. I know I wouldn't.

Don't listen to this Idiot... if you don't pay your outstanding debt a lawyer will not be able to stop the calls as they have purpose.
I listened to an idiot like this and now i have my wages garnished... So if you don't want to talk with the collector call the company you owe the money to and pay it, once that's done fax a copy showing proof of payment to the collection agency.

Now if they call you after proof has been received you have a legal claim against the collector and the agency that employs the collector.
Listen to a person with 1st hand experience not some guy on welfare taking out credit cards and giving out bad legal advice.

I have received numerous calls from collection agents looking for money from some one that does not and never has lived at this number. I have repeatedly informed them of this situation with no results. Your comment may apply to some but certainly not all. Keep your comments to your self as it is obvious you do not know what you are talking about.

From full-time employment, to ei, to social assistance, to part-time work in a span of 5 years (still searching for f/t work, even p/t work that would work with the schedule I have with the p/t work I do now -- can't get a job if you can't even get an interview!), credit cards went by the wayside, and interest just kept piling on.  Total credit card debt now is more than I was making f/t, and 3 times what I make a year.  And this year I lose one source of income for sure, two if my son does not return to school, so I'm going to be hurting...basically any extra I have each month must be put towards living expenses for the months when my income is very low (hours cut at beginning of each year)...right now I'm in subsidized housing, so that is ok, but that doesn't last forever, then I'll be screwed.  Basically, what I have to live on a year isn't enough for one person, let alone 2 people (I'm a single parent), so keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table is the priority.

I spoke to a trustee in bankruptcy the other day.  He says I'm in a bad position because the creditors are calling (they've been told everything is to be in writing...but have had very little of that from them) threatening to sue (in fact, one is indicating they are going to commence suit - funny how it is the one with the lowest amount owing that is being the most aggressive in trying to collect), and I'm going to have less money coming in later in the year, making next year a very stressful year and it isn't even here yet!  Anyways, he said that yes, going for bankruptcy is something I should be doing, but not at the moment.  First of all, he said the creditors can only go after 3 things: a) property  - I have none so not an issue; b) seize bank account - since I changed banks to one where I don't have credit card debt, they can't do that; and c) garnishment of wages (which the trustee said is only 10% of your wages).  Even if they try to sue, he said it still takes time for things to proceed.  So until my back is against the wall, he says hold off as long as possible.  BUT, he said NOW (early part of the year) is NOT the time to file bankruptcy - if I were to file now, not only would I lose my income tax refund for 2012, but also my income tax refund for 2013.  But if I wait until I get my tax refund, then file, only my 2013 tax refund (which will be very little, as that tax year, I'll no longer be claiming my child as equivalent to spouse) will I lose.  Being that I'm looking at about $200 per month for 9 months to be in bankruptcy that I have to pay the trustee, he said I could use the income tax refund to pay the trustee, then unless my income goes over (surplus) in a given month during the time of bankruptcy, then I'm paid for the bankruptcy and can concentrate on building up savings to pay for my living expenses next January when my income is half (or worse) what it is later in the year.    So the creditors can do all they want because I'll be filing bankruptcy at some point this year.

I also got a call from this company and yes I do owe money. I am not scum but was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and have up to but prbably not a full year left. I explained that my wife and I purchased a new home and purchased new furniture and appliances and that when I became siclk that my wife left me with all the debt and I was no longer able to work. I was self employed. I wasn't looking for sympathy but wanted to explain my situation. The person just ignored me and said that I had to pay before I died. This upset me beyond anything. How can a person be so cold. Signed Upset.

They called me about a debt I had with another collector where I had not received any legal paper work, nor confirmation from the one collector, so I have to declare their claim fraudulent and conspiring to commit extortion.

And if need be I will press charges.

Ontario Disability, Ontario Works General welfare and Canada Pension/Old Age Security are protected by law and cannot be garnished.  If you doubt this statement get in touch with  Service Canada, Revenue Canada or Ontario Revenue.
Screw the scum bag bottom feeders; they all sound like they're 4' 2" with an inferiority complex with a cheap community college diploma and a Hitler mentality,  All of these pieces of sh--t sound like never-was-wanna-be's trying to be the cops the could never get to be.

Its easy to see you have never fallen on hard times.  Some blood sucking bottom feeder like you doesn't make it any easier.  Your kind  don't give a damn about what lawyers tell you not to do and you do as you please, contrary to what Ontario law says you can and can not do.
YOU CANNOT CONTACT A DEBTORS NEIGHBORS, THAT IS HARASSMENT. DO IT TO ME AND YOU WILL HAVE THE COPS UP YOUR BUTT SO FAST THEY'LL BE TICKLING YOU TONSILLS WITH HANDCUFFS.
To any of you out there reading this, the first thing to do IS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU OWE ANYONE ANY THING; KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT LET THE IDIOT RATTLE ON THEN HANG-UP.  DON'T LET THEM GET TO YOU AND DON'T MAKE ANY PROMISES YOU DON'T INTEND TO KEEP.
They have only two years to collect on a debt.  If you are unsure of your rights go to a lawyer.  There are plenty of legal aid clinics in Ontario and lawyers that love to dump on this human waste matter.

Need Some Help

Sometimes, depending how long you've been in arrears, the best option is to allow the company to take you to small claims court.  As long as you file a defence, you will be entitled to a pre-conference hearing.  There, you can negotiate a settlement (full cash payment) or a payment plan and even request a reduction in interest payments.  Providing evidence to the judge of financial hardship, the judge may accept your proposal even if the company does not.  Also, don't freak out - collection agencies ALWAYS send out those notices as an attempt to force you to contact them.

Here is what I reccommend - call them.  Tell them you can pay $1,500 right now and propose a monthly payment YOU can afford, not what the company wants.  If they refuse, allow it to go to court - BUT FILE A DEFENCE!  Document all communication with the company.  If you reach an agreement re: payment plan out of the courts, send them a registered letter detailing what you discussed and save a copy for yourself.  And then honour your agreement.  And always, always, always, save all communication from the company, and all correspondence you have sent to the company.

Been getting calls for 4 YEARS!!! for someone who is in no way related to me but because we have the same last name and lived in the same small town 2 YEARS ago, every collection agency that this goes through, and it has been upwards of 15, gives me a call. So what I would like to say, is stop posting for your business and suck me. Obviously I have told EVERY SINGLE one I have answered that we are in no way related and yet you dumb bottoms continue to ignore the notes and add my number. Excuse me if I fail to be polite to your veiled threats on my voice mail. Once again, suck me.

Debt Collector
The facts are that all collection companies are trying to collect on written off debts, which they have bought in bulk, for a few cents on the dollar! There weapon of choice, the telephone! It's not like the old days where someone personally called your number! These bafoons use auto dialers which dial up to 20 numbers at once, and when one of those called numbers answers, the system screen pops up the account info. That's why you will more than often answer, and get know body there! My advice? Just don't answer, or if you do, straight up ask the collector number for their legal name and provincial registration number! That will intimidate them! Btw, they MUST give it to you! Then, advise them that as per your provincial legislation, the only contact to be made must be by mail! Or here in BC, tell them zero contact unless the litigate against you! Playing hardball is the only way to deal with these pests! They are akin to a STD! They just don't give up!
