I also got a call from this number today and the lady with a very think Indian accent told me that I had qualified to recieve $7,000.00 in federal grant. The "reason" I was selected was that they "recently did a demographic survey in the area. And I was was selected because I paid my taxes. I said very few words and she ended up hanging up on me. When I called the number back I got a message stating that the number was no longer in service.

called saying i won a 7k grant just for paying my taxes after another number called me telling me to call this one.apprently they need 280 dollars in a western union for 10 min to verify that its me. ya i was born yesterday

they hung up as soon as I answered.

I didn't answer this call and they left no message.  They also called yesterday.  I decided to call the number back and got this message:

"We're sorry but the number you have dialed is not a working number.  Please check the number and dial again.  Message AXE-1."

Got a call from this number today and the lady (I think, as I could barely understand her at all) told me that I had qualified to recieve $700.00 in federal grant money that I never had to pay back and never had to pay taxes on. The "reason" I was selected was that they "recently did a demographic survey in the area and were looking for people who had no criminal record and had troubles paying bills lately." She then asked me how I would like to recieve this money, credit card, bank card, or cash. All I was asked to verify was my home address. She then gave me her "Direct supervisors telephone number" which was a completely different area code. I never called the supervisor back as I figured this was a scam.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

Have received two missed calls from this number with no voicemail left.  This is probably one of those Pay Day Loan companies claiming to be from the Federal Crimes Investigation Department and that they are trying to collect on a debt.
