908-277-6497 left a message, said he represented himself when asked who (as in a client) he represents...so this seemed fishy.  he called my attorney's office where i work, identifying himself as jeff payer, when i called back to put him through the ringer b/c no calls get to my boss w/o me first, the secretary said she didn't know what case he called on, but that she was his secretary....I mean how does she sit there all day like a dumbass.  i guess to each their own in this economy.

This is simply an annoying and persistent stock broker cold-calling a list that consists primarily of lawyers.  You can just ignore his messages or call him back and ask to be removed from his list.  I tried the latter, which didn't work, so I've just ignored his two subsequent messages.

He is not a scam artist, just a cold-calling stock broker with a very annoying sales pitch and questionable voicemail practices (not explaining the nature of the call so that you call back thinking it is important).

But taking a step back, consider whether you want a financial advisor who wants to sell you "1000 shares" of a single stock without knowing anything about your appetite for risk, net worth, and existing portfolio.

Obviously a scam.  However, I receive the number in a different manner.  I posted an ad on craigslist and immediately upon posting, received an email stating:

"Saw your post on Craigslist and would like more info...I am going to be on the road so could you give me a call when it is convenient? Don 908 554 2787"

The email was obviously automatically generated from a script that's leeching off newly posted craigslist posts.  I didn't call the number as that would only ensure that I receive spam phone calls from this piece of garbage.

Jeff Payer called for my boss, an attorney, and said he was following up from a conversation he had with my boss back in May, and that he "represents Paulson" leading me to believe he was calling regarding a case.  I could not find any case in our office where one of the parties was named "Paulson" so I googled the number and got this, then went to the website to check it out.  I believe he was intentionally misleading me to make sure I would get the message to my boss in the hopes he would return the call.  After Madoff, et al, I am very skeptical of these investment folks.  He might be a nice guy, but better to be safe than sorry!

Lawyer in NJ. Got the same call here. Left a message saying he spoke to me on X date and was following up. I never spoke to him on that date, and won't be returning the call.

Once again, this scammer called our law firm..

The bottom line is the guy uses people's natural politeness in answering their phone to hook them like he is a long lost friend.  If he was legit, he would say "Hi this is Jeff Payer, I would like to offer my services regarding blah blah"

I think he just dials from an attorney directory focusing on the partners.

Sounds like this guy gets around. We're a law firm in San Clemente, and Jeff Payer said that he had spoken to my boss back in April and was just touching base. I've been my boss' secretary for 3 years now and know this guy has called before. He is, however, very polite. Sneaky, sneaky sales call...

Received the same voicemail from Jeff Payer yesterday.  His tone sounded urgent, but I knew this was complete BS as he garbled the name of his company and said nothing about the purpose of his call.  I Googled the number and came up with 800Notes, a very nice tool indeed.

I prefer them doing this than keeping on calling and calling and calling. This way is much more professional because you can at least tell them you're not interested and that is it.

I'm not Rush Limbaugh fan, but I'll just say "ditto" to about the last 20 messages here.

Called on 6/2/09.  Law firm. "Jeff Pair/Bayer/Player/Bear . . ." etc.

This guy is making a LOT of calls given the number who are showing up on this site.

I think you are missing the point.  I too received a message from this person.  It's not that a broker is calling to sell investments.  It's the manner in which this person does it.  He left me the same type of message -- the tone was somber, he did not identify himself other than his name, and the manner was as if we knew each other and that we had some existing business relationship.  Obviously, he is intentionally not identifying himslef and is intentionally leaving messages in a manner to sound like there is an existing relationship and that we know each other.  it's slimy and sleazy.

He is still at it. Just got a message today with the garbled last name. This often happens as I have clients from around the country. However, it sounded fishy and I was glad to find this website so I would not waste my time. I don't mind people searching for leads, but this is irritating.

Just got a call at our law firm from him as well.  He left a voicemail for the attorney with his call back number of 908-277-6479 and I googled his number and got this thread.  I then sent a warning email out to our entire office to let them know.

I just got a call out here in Sacramento from "Jeff Hager" at that number 908-277-6497. He left a VM, very professional, but I had a hunch something was fishy so I googled the number and found this thread. Won't be calling back. I am lawyer in Sacramento. I have nothing bad to say about "Jeff" as he was perfectly friendly on the vm.

I'm from Indiana and how is a stock broker looking for clients a move that only someone from Indiana would do and how is that unprofessional?

I called him back and he was very proffesional.

These calls come in all the time for me and it?s been from my experience the best way to stop them is to call back, be civil, and ask them to remove your name from their prospects to call.

I?ve been using this site for other calls that come in and when I check them here it always amazes me the responses that come in from the people that post about theses calls.

This isn?t the best place to vent your frustrations. He is a stockbroker and this is how they look for new clients. This is how they've been doing business for years and if you don't want to hear from them again like I said earlier just ask them to stop calling.

I also received a call from a Jeff Hagar from this number. I returned the call but had already found this thread on Google.   It sounds like an investment company.  I dont think I'd trust this kind of company which provides ZERO information
