914-740-1897 I guess they got fired from March of Dimes. Now it says VacationTourTrv.

Not sure what they do but if they are legitimate they should leave a message, not just ring twice and hang up.

I have received several calls from this number. Whenever I pick up, there is no answer - just silence. Is there a way to block this call?

We have signed up on the National Do Not Call list, but this number still leaks through.

Prank Call
Neither, in my opinion.

For one ... like all the scams going around and making harassing calls to all of us, each number that appears on Caller ID is only one different from the last!

These are spoofed numbers!
From Wikipedia:

Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to display a number on the recipient's Caller ID display which is not that of the actual originating station. The term is commonly used to describe situations in which the motivation is considered malicious by the speaker or writer. Just as e-mail spoofing can make it appear that a message came from any e-mail address the sender chooses, Caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes. Because of the high trust people tend to have in the Caller ID system, spoofing can call the system's value into question.

"in which the motivation is considered malicious" i.e., to show a desire and intent to cause some kind of harm to others (in this case harass, scam and possibly even steal anothers identity).

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-914-368-2551/2

... also called our local March of Dimes office and complained about the calls.  The woman said she never heard of such a complaint before and said she would contact the main office in New York (where the 914 originates) with a report of my complaint.

"never heard of such a complaint"

Credit Card rate lowering scam again (914-368-2551 number):

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-914-368-2551/4

Doug Bonnell 25 Nov 2011
Automated message stating that whey could lower my credit card rates. Said to press 2 to stop the calls. It went to an agent. Since the discontinuance function can be automated, I assumed they wanted me to talk to an agent to pursue their commercial offer. I indicated that we are on the do not call list for federal and state and that they risk a $5,000 fine for making the call. She thanked me for telling her that and disconnected.

---
And like in all the other scam calls ... in order to 'opt out' you're asked to press a number (like "3") to get removed off the 'call list'. Problem with that, when it involves such type of calls, is that won't get you removed... it's a way they can know if they have a live phone number and usually the calls will INCREASE rather than stop!!!

Again, the numbers that show on Caller ID:
914-740-1895
914-740-1987
914-368-2551
914-368-2553
and several others - 914-373-7134,  914-290-6339, 914-740-1893, 914-740-1894, 914-740-1896, 914-740-1879, 866-264-5059
NONE of which match any of those actually for March of Dimes!!! (And note that each number is one higher than the previous number. Something strongly the same tactic as those robo-dailing scam calls.... only slightly higher than the last!)

Niether a call center for March of Dimes nor March of Dimes! Calling any of these reported numbers back you will probably get a "this number is not in service..." message, meaning it's a 'dead' number! I have also tried contacting the REAL March of Dimes myself and asked they stop calling! But the calls continued.  Also, see the post I quoted here too, along with the one where one of the numbers reported claims to be about lowering credit card rates (Cardholder Services) rather than donating to or volunteering in any way for March of Dimes. And, again, another of these reported numbers also claimed to be a utility company.  Several times on these numbers it WASN'T for or about March of Dimes!!!!

The only March of Dimes number with a 914 area code is the Main number: 914-997-4488 NOT any that were reported! If this was in any way March of Dimes and you, I or anyone had asked them to stop wouldn't you think they would (including by their asking whatever call center or 'telemarketing' company to stop calling us if we requested they stop)!

Got A call like above not only from this number but ones with last four numbers of 1892 snf 1896.  In my opinion the MOD is using a telemarketing company to solicit donations and I for one will not give money to them who will take 75% or more for their fee.  MOD will not get a donation from me from that source.  .Caller ID identifies calls from New Rochelle NY I do not answer.

Prank Call
Bart, everyone...

Let's compare:
"March of Dimes" calls and hangs up/leaves no message
"Cancer Fund" calls and hangs up/leaves no message
Cardholder Services (or whatever variation they use) sometimes will call and either hang up or leave no message
Home Security Group (or whatever variation they use) sometimes will call and either hang up or leave no message

"March of Dimes" has called using at least 5 different numbers (some showing up as MOD)
Cardholder Services has gone through a multitude of different numbers
Home Security Group has also gone through about as many numbers as has Cardholder Services

Repeated requests that "March of Dimes" to stop calling doesn't stop the calls
Repeated requests that "Cancer Fund" stop calling doesn't stop those calls either
Repeated requests that Cardholder Services stop calling doesn't stop them from calling
Repeated requests that Home Security Group stop calling has the same effect that it does with Cardholder Services... the calls continue

Blocking and/ or call screening any of "March of Dimes" numbers doesn't work
Blocking and/or call screening the number that's displayed on Caller ID for "Cancer Fund" doesn't work
Blocking and/or call screening any number used by Cardholder Services doesn't work
Blocking and/or call screening any number used by Home Security Group doesn't work also

Filing complaints with the FCC, FTC, NDNC Registry, BBB and even IC3.gov doesn't stop any of these from calling ... the calls continue

Numbers for "March of Dimes" may ver well be spoofed numbers
The numbers for "Cancer Fund" may also very well be spoofed
The numbers for BOTH Cardholder Services AND Home Security Group are all believed to be spoofed numbers!

All the ACTUAL numbers for the REAL March of Dimes do NOT match those on Caller ID (and that have been reported), nor does the main/General Inquiries number for March of Dimes!

Sound similar (at least)? Or very much the same tactics? (Usually, if they don't hang up or leave a message they have some spiel that's full of it)!

And as mentioned elsewhere here, at least one of the reported numbers for "March of Dimes" also was used reported as being BOTH for a supposed utility company AND the lowering your credit rate scam! Fact: Both with the utility and the Cardholder Services scams it was an attempt at getting your personal information like CC # and account number! Same has been reported regarding the Home Security Group scam!!!!

It's quite possible they are all the same scam artists... just with a slight variation! The only reason they'd use the March of Dimes and Cancer Fund names on Caller ID (or as part of a scam) is because those two (the real ones) are nonprofit organizations and exempt from the NDNC laws... and these sick scammers would probably be aware of that! Remember they are criminals and as such don't care about any laws and who their victims are!!!

Folks, this isn't the real March of Dimes! Don't buy into this scam, please! This reported number and the others that show up (914-368-2551, 914-368-2553 and 914-740-1985) on Caller ID that display as "March of Dimes" do NOT match ANY of the actual numbers connected with March of Dimes!!!

Yup! They are just another bunch of scam artists trying to get around FTC/DNDNC laws by misrepresenting themselves as March of Dimes!!!

Even more here ...

"10/13      914-740-1897 Said they were my credit card company and that if I wanted a 6.9% interest rate, I better answer now. I'm sure this is a scam."

March of Dimes
Utility Company
Possibly also ... Cradholder Services too ("Said they were my credit card company and that if I wanted a 6.9% interest rate". Same load of bull that Cardholder Services/Rachel-Heather-Florence-Michelle harass us with)

http://knowncaller.com/ReversePhone/914-368-2553.php

The Utility Company guise and that also of Cardholder Services ... same scam, to get your personal infornation and possibly steal your identity.  My guess is they are now using "March of Dimes" as a different guise to get around the do not call/FTC laws as March of Dimes (the real one) is a nonprofit and exempt!

The Carrier that handles this particular number is Teleport Communications, Inc. Teleport also handled Cardholder Services before those scam artists ended up using Pacific Telecom Communications Group!

Nowhere can you see the 914-740-1895, 914-740-1897, 914-368-2551 and 914-368-2553 numbers! Nowhere on that page can they be found!!!

Simple question: What does all that look like to you? March of Dimes? Or a bunch of lowlife scumsucking scam artists trying to get around certain laws by claiming (via Caller ID spoofing) that they are a nonprofit org. like March of Dimes? I'd say the latter of the two! Too many things point to the same tactics other scam artists use and less an actual nonprofit org. would even consider using!!!

I receive a call two and three times a day, almost every single day, I will say,  I am really tired of it.  I am a senior and many times am trying to rest.  They many times let the phone ring just three times, and then they quit.  I have never answered them, nor do I intend to.  I also get Toll free ones the same way.  I hope there is a way to stop all this.  The last thing  I will do, is help anyone that is so rude, and have no consideration for peoples.  Even if I wanted to answer it, ringing it only three times, does not give me the time to reach the phone, as I am 87 years of age, and am not able to walk to well.
Please help and thank you.

"Claiming to be a Missouri Utility company in an attempt to get credit card info or checking account info."

Date on this post: November 28, 2011 11:48:28 am PST

Two days ago!!! And NOT March of Dimes this time with this number, but claiming to be a utility company to get others personal information!!!

"this gentleman stated he was calling on behalf of the march of dimes. he called in the evening of 1192011 at 7:50 p.m. and again on 11102011 at 8:21 a.m. he wouldnt take no for an answer. he used two different telephone numbers each time: 914-740-1879 and 914-740-1895. my feeling is that he was a scammer. made me very uneasy."

Scam!!!! Don't fall for it!!!! Report it as many times as you have to!!!! ALL these scam artists (including those engaged in fraud, as those behind this number seem to be) need to be stopped!!!! But, to repeat, this is a SCAM!!! And NOT the real March of Dimes!!! (What legit nonprofit/charity would use caller id spoofed numbers and continue calling when you ask them to stop? None! This isn't the real MOD, it's yet more scammers!!!)

"I am President of a nonprofit.  We would never use these tactics."

EXACTLY!!!! THat's why I highly doubt this number (and the other three that are used) belongs to March of Dimes.  The tactics used, in connection to these 4 reported numbers that constantly harass us all, are those that scam artists and NOT any real non-profit/charity organization would use.  Especially the honestly legit ones!!!

Am an not connected with any non-profit. Just one of the possibly hundreds of annoyed and harassed folks sic of ALL these intrusive, harassing calls we get on a daily basis that wind up invading our privacy and want it stopped!!!

? Blocking this number and the other 3 these scum use - 914-740-1895, 914-368-2551 and 914-368-2553) does not work
? Placing each of these numbers on call screen does not work (a good indication they are spoofed numbers)
? Calling March of Dimes State Chapters  and asking them to stop calling does not work
? Calling March of Dimes General Inquiries number and asking them to stop calling also does not work
Nor does being on the do not call list or complaining at the DNC Registry site work either (see second here for possibly why)
One other thing... on the March of Dimes Contact Us page not one of their chapter phone numbers match any of these mentioned here and the only one that has the 914 area code is their general inquiries number but the 3 digit prefix and the rest of the number is different from any of these 4 reported numbers!!!

Possible fraud could be implied here. Definite harassment though... incessant calls to not only home landlines and cell phones but business phones as well ... and these scum refuse to stop calling!!!

Were this actually March of Dimes (which I doubt) any of those mentioned above would have worked! They don't! But... assuming these numbers possibly could be, a definite reason to not EVER donate to them again!!!

They have called repeatedly and never left a message. I wonder why they use MOD instead of March of Dimes. I suspect this is actually a paid caller operation.  They tend to be no better than the hucksters trying to sell a product or service.

The Do Not Call legislation is full of loopholes.  Charities are exempt. They are allowed to call non-stop 24 hours a day without penalty, and it does not matter whether you are on the list.

My policy is to refuse to give to charities that use these kind of tactics. I treat any group using illegitimate tactics as illegitimate.

I am President of a nonprofit.  We would never use these tactics.

Something to keep in mind about all these bothersome calls for surveys, so called charities and even with charity pickups despite asking them to remove you from their list:

Call centers have sprung up in my town that make use of the survey and the charity loophole around the do not call list; they have been a headache for law enforcement, emergency services, neighboring businesses and residential areas.  When I ask any patrolling officer in town about these call centers, they are quick to state their frustrations about the criminal activity that some of these call centers have brought into the area. Several law enforcement agencies regularly visit some of these call centers looking for warrant arrests etc.  I have heard stories from other sources including from frustrated employees that work for these call centers complaining about the drug activity, vandalism of cars and neighboring businesses, break-ins and theft, drinking while on the job, smoke breaks are actually marijuana breaks, drunk driving, very dangerous driving, tons of tossed out litter of empty liquor containers, trash, food etc .  I have heard of stories where the mangers are also involved in criminal activities and have even preyed on their legitimate employees who are simply trying to eek out a living on horrible wages.  Also the operators are untrained in a very high turn around, poorly managed and dysfunctional work environment.

Also realize this when you call a companies? customer service line and get horrible service from the call center that?s been hired by the company.  One time while on a call with our bank?s customer service, the operator was so loopy that it required ending the call and calling again to try and get someone else to help, think about that when you call a companies customer service and the conversation gets odd, off the wall and obtuse ? you may be talking to an operator that?s drunk or on something.  After 6 months of getting a different and wrong answer to our ongoing problem each time we called our bank, we gave up and closed the account.

With so little police left in our town due to cutbacks, they can?t always respond to vandalism and break-ins when it?s witnessed as they have their plate full responding to the major emergencies, this allows the criminal activity free reign, the neighborhood becomes the hood.  Some insurance companies require proof of private security patrols before they will honor a claim due to vandalism or theft leaving the neighboring businesses off guard and uncovered.  These businesses also have the added cost to hire private security or install security systems and monitoring.  Then there are the dangers and headaches to the nearby businesses employees such as their cars being vandalized or broken into.  Some businesses simply give in, pickup and move out of town.

One of my neighbors owns a call center and he requires that his operators are bonded, but I guess there?s no laws requiring this ? there should be.  Right now in my town it seems like anybody can start up a call center and hire questionable labor for cheap without much regulation.

Have now received 5 calls in two days for 5 different numbers.  All for march of dimes and undoubtedly a marketing company who take at least 75% , if not more, of the funds raised.  March of Dimes is making a fatal mistake in trying to generate fund via this method.  I will NEVER EVER give another contributiion to March of Dimes.  Similar situation last year with calls for the Heart Fund when I received more than 12 calls for that organization.
