I got the call today.  Very thick accent, could barely understand him but he was telling me that my computer was putting out illegal information and that my windows needed something fixed.  Had some verbal fun with him then told him that I really knew it was a scam, I don't use windows and he should quit trying to blow smoke up my azz.  That confused him!  Anyway, need to report this!  Just have fun and mess with them, drives them nuts!

S0- the plot thickens?
what i would really like to find out is whether they can do this remote login thing WITHOUT your having even picked up the phone??
when they have called us (thankfully not in a couple weeks), i have seen more than one occasion the phone screen reads "Line In Use" EVEN THOUGH I NEVER ANSWERED THE CALL.  which makes me quite nervous?

Received another call, this time I played along.
The foreign-male voice stated that he was Jake from Windows support.
Here is what they are requesting you to do...
1. Get in front of your computer.
2. Press Ctrl+{Windows Key}+R
3. In Run box, enter INF and click Enter.
This pulls up a C:\Windows\Inf and asked if I could identify any files in this directory (it is a Windows  directory).
I stated, "No"
Then they had me open my browser and enter: http://www.calderatech.com/
Jake stated that he would be connecting me to his senior technician, named Melvin.
Melvin confirmed with me that I had the website open and wanted to click on a big green button.
DO NOT CLICK ON THIS BUTTON-This green button is dangerous; as, it has an executable behind the link: #######calderatech.com/RemoteSupport/Caldera-Tech_Remote_Support.exe
This will install their application on your machine to allow them to take full control.

Confronted this Bozo.  He went silent, then hung up.

Avoid tech support phone scams

Cybercriminals don't just send fraudulent email messages and set up fake websites. They might also call you on the telephone and claim to be from Microsoft. They might offer to help solve your computer problems or sell you a software license. Once they have access to your computer, they can do the following:

?Trick you into installing malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords. They might also then charge you to remove this software.

?Take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings to leave your computer vulnerable.

?Request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services.

?Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.

Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.

Here is another number for the same scam.  567-214-9999

They call me about every hour, I've never answered the phone for these numbers but they won't stop calling.  I may answer and when I talk to someone, I'll ask them to wait a second and just lay the phone down and see how long they will stay on the phone.

Its a scam and all they want is your money! They have no way of knowing whats going on with your computer and No legitimate company cold calls like this.  The scam usually entails them taking you to your event viewer which is a internal monitor that logs events on your computer.. Oh sure, you will see the error's logged, but its all a scam to get you to allow them access to your computer. The event viewer is only doing its job and its there for a real tech to look through should you actually have a problem. Then they want remote access! They usually turn your anti virus program off  and give you a big spiel, then inform you they want a small fee to fix it.. several hundred dollars of course! Meanwhile, they have access to all your computer and could be gleaning personal info, downloading stuff to your computer to turn it into a zombie computer to spam folks..

they're baaaaacck?
after not hearing from them for awhile, they just called. and then while i was looking up the # to remind myself which ones they are, they phoned back again. i let it ring - but after just a couple rings, the phone suddenly read "line in use" for about 15 seconds, then disconnected. that's new to me? could these scammers be throwing some sort of signal through your hung-up phone to grab info somehow? that sounds really dumb & paranoid as i read it? but is it possible? it really bothers me that i do not know how my line could somehow be "in use" when i haven't answered the call. especially since in the past few weeks several someones in other countries keep trying to hack into certain of our computer accounts. it seems to me the crooks are doing SOMETHING new- and could the two possibly be related??
Anyone know anything about this?

This is an obvious scam.  Indian guy just called and said there are reports of our computers running slow and he is going to walk me through fixing it.  The call keeps breaking up and so I say no thank you.  He proceeds to say "F. off".

Every few years we start getting these calls as soon as some types of computer malware protection run out.
We have also been hit by the 'FBI has locked down your computer' scam, and had computer pros update our virus protection.
If any of these callers could be understood over the phone, they might have a chance of succeeding.
When we tell them that news of this scam has been posted in our local newspaper's Business section, they switch scripts.
Someone who teaches ESL should tell these poor foreign refugees that this is not legitimate employment in the USA.
A retry of the incoming phone number says that it is no longer in service.

I got a call from this number today. I have caller ID and I did not answer. When I see these telemarketing numbers on my caller Id i always check the 800notes website to see who they are.  These people are scamers. It was on the tv news last week where they took over a persons computer and tried to get him to pay a fee so he could get back in his computer. He did not pay. He had a someone  to fix his computer.

Not all old people are unaware as mentioned above. I had many calls from the same number in the past two weeks. Today I answered one, just for the fun of it. The caller ID showed the 914-819-0445 number and VONAGE HOLDINGS. The caller went into his usual line, as many of you stated, obviously reading from a scripted line. He really hated my interrupting his script by asking "What did you say, I cannot understand you?" Then he would just start from the beginning each time, like that would be easier to understand. After about 10 minutes of making him repeat himself, he gave up. I am sure that SOB will not be calling me back. It was fun for me. DON'T MESS WITH OLD PEOPLE. WE WILL MESS YOU UP.

12-19-2013  Received multiple calls from #.  A  "Max" Claims he wants to to fix my computer which is sending error messages to MS. Told him I gad a MAC. He hung up. -Next time he called, I asked who he was and what company did he work for, and he hung up.

You would think they would not call the same # after being confronted.
I wonder if the real Vonage knows this is going on ?.
As I typed this I just got a second call from a different "accented" person saying he was with "Windows Care" from a blocked #. And MicroSoft computer updates were not going through and he was here to help me fix that.

Said his # was at 888-991-1910 and he was in Florida. When I asked if he had connections to New York people who just called me he Hung up. Maybe I will let them walk me though a fix so I can see what they are trying to delete/reset.
May be time to get State att. general involved.

I am surprised the police actually did their jobs and filed the report.  Austin Police Department is worthless, see this YouTube Video regarding the Windows scammers (three way call to Austin Police Department) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXxbYwZ_KPU

This is a scam to get access to your computer..do NOT fall for it.  This guy w/a foreign accent said I had bad spyware files on my computer.  I told him I was tracing the call and calling the police because it's an illegal scam to hack my computer.  Nobody can see your computer or your files and if they did see spyware or virus files, they would NOT contact you this way anyhow.  You'd get a certified letter and/or email from your internet service provider if it really were that bad..and it usually isn't.  Never give out your info or do ANYTHING they tell you on the phone if it's not somebody you know.  Your provider of internet will send somebody over worst case scenario to help you (may be at a price) but don't do the phone scams!

Just got a call from this unidentified male with very broken English.  The reverse lookup on the 914-819-0495 places it in NY.  This same individual scammed my elderly neighbor by holding her PC hostage until she paid $70 after password protecting it and not letting her know the password.  She didn't pay the $70 and thus called me instead.  I keep telling her to never allow anyone onto her computer.  A couple of years ago they got her for $240.  I played along with him since my background is computer security.  I told him that I do not have a Windows Operating system just to see his reaction and he tried to argue with me about it.  I asked him why he thinks I have a Windows Operating system and he told me that he got the information from a survey.  I questioned the survey and he didn't know but was determined that I had Windows.  I turned that number in to our State Attorney General's office after they tried to scam our neighbor again but doubt they can do anything.  We need to somehow spread the word about these scam artists.  They're getting more common and calls are coming in all the time.

It is good advice, IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO MAKE DEATH THREATS TO THE PERSON WHO CALLED YOU.
No such thing as a reverse call trace.

The same guy from Windows maintenance called me and said that every time I download something or go onto a website, someone else can see it. Bull pucky! This computer isn't even mine, so it isn't attached to my home number. So, how would they know what phone number to call? It's bogus. Hang up on 'em. Trust your gut!

914-819-0445, "Michael" called today (11/14/13).  Heavily accented voice.  Said I had computer problems.
couldn't answer exactly how he knew MY computer had problems.  Since I was annoyed at his call, I kept him on the phone for 5 minutes or so, annoying him as best I could.
He finally hung up, then called back about 2 minutes later.
I did not answer the second call.
I am seriously considering disconnecting my land line due to these types of calls.  It seems that is all we get on the land line, so what good is it anyway!
