Called and hung up...

Am posting back again after the Oct. 2008 one. (I agree so much with Gayle--I should have probably tried to send my little tirade to the Journal News as a Letter to the Editor . . . might do so yet, if I can get the time.)
Anyway, this was just to say the calls started up again this month, and they were at least 4 times a day. One afternoon, while my husband was ill and trying to take a nap, they called 4 times in one hour--every 15 minutes! Even though I've blocked the number so it doesn't go through, it still rings once, and that's enough to wake someone up. I got so mad, I called the number back (blocking my number from being shown however, by pressing *67 first)and after listening to the speech that I could leave my phone number to be taken off the list, I icily stated our number and said that I considered this harassment, and that if it didn't stop, I would report them to the authorities. (Couldn't remember which authorities to name at the time, but I think it's the FTC.) The calls still continued for one more full day, but they SEEM to have stopped now. The interesting thing was, when I went on our Optimum Phone/Voice/Whatever-it-is site to look at the number and dates of the calls received, some of them came from India. (At least, the one I made didn't go to India; that would really have had me up in arms.)
The part I still don't understand is, why can't they leave a message? Maybe they are taking a poll I wouldn't mind being in, but how can I know if they don't state why they're calling? And if we're not interested, then after as many attempts as they've made, you'd think they'd figure that out. Because it then DOES become harassment, especially once you've told them to get you off the list. If they call again, I am reporting them to the State Attorney General and the FTC.

if you call the number, you can leave your phone number and they say they will remove your number from their list

I've been getting calls from this number too. I never pick up though
| Gayle 2009-08-24 20:44:00 Unknown |
We haven't gotten this one for a while now, but it's starting up again.
Will, your posting from 2008 says it all--so well! Thank you. I've been thinking of writing a letter almost exactly like yours to the NY Times or the local Gannett paper in the hopes that if it's in print, the telemarketers might SEE the message. They're not going to be able to HEAR it because their robots don't take messages, and there's no way we're answering the phone or calling them back.
Anyway, thanks; it's nice to know we're not alone in our methods.

I've been getting these for a couple of weeks now from this number. It shows up as "out of area," and they never leave a message or say anything to the machine.

These people are calling 2-3 times a day. I agree with the above poster: they're spinning their wheels We won't pick up either.

We've been getting several calls from them, almost one a day, usually at a different time. Tonight was at 7:30. They never leave a message, and the only thing the caller ID shows is Chappaqua NY, which is not far away from us. I'm assuming the Clintons (who live in Chappaqua), wouldn't be wasting their time on such an unintelligent way of poll-taking. Even Westchester.gov leaves canned messages from Andy Spano.
All I have to say to all the robo-call/telemarketers out there is, if you really want to make contact, you're wasting your time with this method. And if you don't--if you're simply calling to see if a live body does exist at a particular number, so you can sell it it other telemarketers--you're still spinning your wheels. Caller ID is a fact of life, folks: get used to it. If you're listed as unknown, or private call,or blocked call, or Chappaqua, it still doesn't matter--if we don't know who's calling, we don't answer. Friends can leave a message and we'll call back. All the others, unless you have a legitimate cause and leave a message, you're automatically out of luck.

We've also been getting calls from them. Does it matter that we are on the no-call list. Do I report them?
| jane 2007-11-24 17:13:53 Unknown |
it's a political call from Meyer Associates. Don't know anything more.
