They tend to pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community.  You might ask if someone in the immediate command structure could notify the others in your unit, because I think members in the lower enlisted rates might also easily become victims of this sort of thing.  I remember the scams people used to try against EMs in the Army years ago.

Hi Bruce,
I've also received a phone call with a man name Robert Mathews told me that he is with Legal Affairs Office with the Department of Treasury claiming there is a warrant out for my arrest.  He also said if I don't take actions now an agent would come to my house and arrest me.  I hung up the phone after I told him I will be seeking legal help from the Navy Jag officer since I am active duty military.

This is a well known scam.  See below:

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

I'm so glad you seek legal help from your lawyer.  I was so upset and told him that it is impossible for me not to pay my income tax since I am active duty military serving in the US Navy.

I've just received a phone call from 915-317-4924 claiming that they issued a warrant on me and I will be arrested within 45 minutes if I don't resolve my legal matter about not paying my income tax.  He has a heavy indian accent threaten me that I will lose my job and serve some jail time if I don't take care of the situation right away.  He also claimed that his name is Robert Mathew from Legal Affairs Office with the Department of Treasury.  I had informed him that I am active military serving in the US Navy and would like to inform my chain of command before I take any actions.  He insisted that I need to take care of it right away and if I want to speak to his supervisor.  So please beware of this scam.  I'm glad I found this website.

El Paso, Texas 915-317-4924 heavy accent Indian male, could not make out the name since he left me a voice mail saying he was with the Department of internal Affairs and that if I don't take care of the action, it would become a legal mess. When I called back he told me someone was filing against me but I told him that's impossible. And he told me I was going to be transferred. I was at a grocery store when it happened and I started crying because I was confused, it made no sense. Then I called my lawyer and they told me it's probably a scam, then I looked up the number myself and found out that this has been happening to people all over for months. Definitely a scam. I will also find out from my lawyer in an hour too. Don't give any information.

I got the same call and looked it up to see if it was a scam. I decided to have some fun. I called the number back and asked to speak with George Rogers, a female said that she was his supervisor. I asked if the officer could contact my lawyer and she said yes. I said let me know when you are ready, I began to spell my lawyer's name M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E (I pronounced it Mickay Moosay)
His phone number is 123-456-7890. She finally figured it out and started to laugh. I told her it was good that she had a sense of humor because they all suck as scam artist. Then she hung up. My wife was listening and she almost fell over laughing as she listened in.

My son got the call and called me because he thought they meant to call me.  I called them back and this man with a heavy accent who said he was Robert Mathews told me he was with the Department of Internal Affairs of the IRS and there was a warrant for my arrest. He asked if there was any action against me and I said yes. Then he wanted to know what it was and I said none of his business, that if he knew then he should not need me to tell him. He then said his people would be coming to arrest me and hung up.

Probably not, since they are using VOIP to make and spoof calls, making it next to impossible to trace.

Debt Collector
Caller ID showed Texas Call and 915-317-4924. Called twice today. First caller was a man with heavy Indian accent who told me his name was Robert Kruse. He told me he was from the US Treasury Department of Legal Affairs, and call concerned "filing of a legal case". Said that the reason was back taxes. Asked him how much? Said he couldn't tell me, but if I wanted to resolve the matter, I should speak to his supervisor. Then another guy came on the line and told me I was under investigation and the sheriff would soon be along to arrest me! When I asked why the sheriff would be arresting me if it were a federal issue,   he hung up. First guy then called back and asked me if I wanted to resolve the situation? Told him sure, how much do I owe? Then he hung up too. Clearly a scam, but not done very well. These guys are just clowns.

>>> The 4th time a man with a thick foreign accent left a message about me being sued and how I had to respond immediately or I'd have serious legal trouble. <<<

I suggest you just block the number.  But if you want to try having a little fun:

Tell him he's a coward for hiding in a foreign country behind a magicJack number.  Then tell him the magicJack company will be asked to have his phone service shut off and have him arrested because they know exactly where he is and who he is calling.

Caller ID showed a number I didn't recognize so I didn't pick up. (915-317-4924) The phone rang again several more times, showing the same #. The 4th time a man with a thick foreign accent left a message about me being sued and how I had to respond immediately or I'd have serious legal trouble. I could barely understand a word he said! Definite scam! Most people know that actual legal affairs are not conducted in this manner!  What idiots!

Just found  a call from this number on my answering machine, extremely strong accent but very "American" name. Threatened a "huge legal mess" if I do not call back with a visa number. Mentioned law enforcement agency blah blah. Definite scam. Do not ever take this kind of call or give them any information.
