This unknown man with a very heavy accent called me from a bogus company stating that I am involved with a criminal investigation and that a warrant was issued for my arrest. He went on to tell me that in result of this criminal matter, I was being sued and that I needed to contact Marc Victor (an attorney) in order to learn of the charges. This is in association with Cash Advance, in which a loan was applied for and the man knew of my last 4 digits of my SSN and my home address. The number he called me from was 916-304-5747.  I know that this is bogus # associated with scams!! I had already contacted the FTC regarding this matter. DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER BACK!!!!

My call from this number followed the same pattern as the posts listed here. My call was from "John Smith" (how original!) and his message said I must have my attorney call or he would just have to wish me luck. It's a scam! Don't sweat this call!

?Angelica C quoted the caller as saying, "The second you receive this message I need you or your attorney of record to return this call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive."?

Don't you love their use of the legal jargon "attorney of record" instead of just plain "attorney?"  They use the term "attorney of record" just to make it sound as though they know more than you when it comes to legal matters, when in fact, they don't know what they are talking about themselves.

Here is the definition of "attorney of record" from Cornell University Law School Legal Information Institute:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/attorney_of_record
"A lawyer who appears in court or receives pleadings and other formal documents on a party's behalf. Also known as counsel of record."

You don't need to have an "attorney of record." A regular attorney NOT of record would also do quite well, thank you.  (He might become your "attorney of record" later, if the case ever got that far, but that doesn't seem likely here.)

As far as the issue at hand being "extremely time sensitive," that's only said because they don't want you to think about anything, but to panic immediately instead.  That way, you don't get a chance to reflect on anything they say or anything you do, when in fact, if you did have that chance, you would understand that these people are scammers.  Unless you are actively planning or trying to do something that will cause immediate bodily harm to someone, a reasonable rule of thumb in law is that most things can wait until tomorrow.

There are exceptions to that rule, of course, in particular for actions that you want to take for yourself for your benefit.  But if another party tries to coerce you into thinking that you have to do something "the second you receive this message" for THEIR benefit, sirens and red lights should start going off.  That's especially the case if a party who has adverse interests to yours gives you that "advice."

"This message is intended for __________. The second you receive this message I need you or your attorney of record to return this call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is Roy Smith. My number is 916-304-5747. I repeat 916-304-5747. Do not try to disregard this message and do return the call. Now, if you do not return the call and I don't hear from you or your attorney the only thing I can do is wish you luck as the situation unfolds on you. Good luck. Take Care."

DO NOT CALL BACK this is a scam! I'm changing my number.. I've received several calls from several different numbers.. C'mon dude your name is not "Roy Smith"... DO NOT CALL THIS LIAR BACK

Okay, everyone...a little payback can be fun, too!

I called these A**holes about 17 times in a row after my ex called from work in a panic about the threats she was receiving.  Of course, it's all just so much BS, as everyone on this site has attested.
However, instead of taking it, I decided to turn the tables on them.  As my user-name indicates, I'm an attorney in CA and have a friend that works at the State of CA AG's office in Sacramento.  Also, you might as well assume I'm a little devious.
Anyway, I called 17 times and began to threaten them myself.  I claimed to have recorded their "State Attorney General's office" salutation when they answer the phone, gave them my bar number when it was requested, told them I'd spoken to my friend at the AG's office and they had agreed to prosecute them for mis-representation, fraud and numerous other charges if they EVER answered the phone similarly OR made ANY calls to ANYONE claiming to be attorneys at the State AG's office.  They immediately denied every having answered the phone in that way - to which I claimed to have it on tape.  I did this (or something similarly fun and satisfying 17 times in a row, as stated above!).
God life is good when there's nothing to fear.  Tell them to shove it and that you're reporting them to the AG's office for prosecution next time they call.  Or, as I did...make something up and have a little fun with these idiots!!

This guy with an accent so thick I could hardly understand him. Tells me today he is calling from the State Attorneys Office and I have a law suit against me but he wouldn't give me any details telling me to call another number. I asked him what state he was calling from and he says Los Angeles. OK I have a lawsuit in LA I live In PA. I ask for detail of the case and the issue he would not tell me. I demand his address and he would not provide that to me nor would he send me any written documentation. SCAMMMMM ALERT!
And the worst part is saying you are calling for a State Attorney Office I am sure that is a huge offense. I may call back just to get there info so I can call my State Attorney and file a law suit take that A**hole.

Print out this page and give to your HR Dept or manager - you should not be getting in trouble because you're being harassed by scammers!

When this joker calls you back again - and he will - tell him that all calls he and his "company" makes to you are being recorded, and that you've reported the calls to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General.  And DO report the calls.  You already know it's a scam.

Claimed to be State Attorney office in California.
They called at 7am in the morning.  I informed them that this was illegal and asked if this was some type of emergency.  I asked what state he was in he said California and he did give the city of Sacramento.  When I told him that I was filing a complaint and that I would be contacting the state myself.  He hung up.  The name he gave was Alex, so I called back to see if I got the same person.  He answered and I told him I needed more information for the complaint form. He hung up again.  Then he called me back less then a minute later.  I answered and said, Hi Alex I'm glad you called back so I could get more information for my complaint.  There was silence on the line.  So I asked why they couldn't say anything else, if they could call at 7am why couldn't they talk. No response and then a dial tone.

My sister has received calls from these people, scaring her and telling her she will be picked up from her work or home. When I called posing as a attorney, they just transferred me to another person after waiting for about 3-5 minutes. then they asked for my attorney id number and a fax number.  the bad part is that she paid the 600 dollars they asked for and then they told her it didn't go through and she need to pay another 900 by 5:30 tonight.  like the other  emails above they do know her ssn and bank number, her address where she work.
These people are a bunch of SCAM ARTISTS  and need to pay for what they are doing to innocent people.

I recieved a message from "Michael Carter". I was told I needed to call his company right away.  He said something I couldn't understand and then said I needed to give him my attorney info.  This happened to me about a year and a half ago too with various other callers.  I started telling them to send me a letter and then I researched and found these posts.  They get very angry when you call their bluff. I ignore calls from numbers I dont know.

This company keeps calling me claiming I owe a debt to him and he's a lawyer,  I have told them not to call me office and continues to call than switches to my personal # calling at least 5 times in a row, leaving threatening messages to have me arrested, etc.  It is a Scam but also getting me in severe trouble at work since he refuses to stop calling me.

I just received a call from this number saying the same thing except the guys name was Paul. Check fraud due to a cash advance that wasn't paid back (I didn't take out a cash advance). As soon as I told him ok I'll call the company and clear figure out what is going on he tried to scare me and tell me it was to late and that I was going to go to jail. I again told him I'll call the company as I never took out a cash advance. He then hung up on me right away. Scary part is he had the name of my bank and my full SSN and my full name I'm a little worried about what he can use my information for!

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

I just picked up a voice mail from 7:15am this morning, could barely understand the guy, said something having my attorney call him immediately and if I didn't he wished me luck with what was going to happen with me...what a scam!  Obviously not even a legitimate third party collector, never gave a company (or if he did I couldn't understand the f***er) doesn't have a freaking clue that you can't call someone before 8am or more than once an hour. I think I'm gonna get out my referee whistle just for them!

This same guy has called my daughters phone using 1-805-637-7243 which is the # used to call T-Mobile to retrieve voice mails. she never uses this # and we did not understand why the voice mail system was calling her. we reported it to T-Mobile. We were told they do not know who or how anyone would be able to use this #. Then they said people can MASK their own # with any #. This guy is has a very strong Indian dialect. it is hard to figure out what he is saying. He is trying very hard to speak English. Blocked these two #'s. Will wait to see if it stops. Very creepy.
