Telemarketer
Robo call "regret to inform you that your merchant account has been frozen" and asking us to call this number to "release" the account. Obvious phishing scam.

Telemarketer
People - This is simply a scam company using both a Robo-caller dialing random numbers (they don't need to know your number!) and they are using a spoofed origination number (which they can easily obtain from companies that purchase phone numbers from carriers and resell them to illegal telemarketers so that they are unable to be traced. These companies also supply the number spoofing service and are knowingly supplying services to illegal telemarketers that allow them to operate without fear of being prosecuted. Due to a loophole, they are still able to get away with this).

916-555-1212 is directory assistance for the 916 area code.  There is no reason anyone should get a LEGITIMATE call from this number.   The same is true for 555-1212 with any area code in front of it.   Ask the caller why they are using a fake number.  it's called spoofing.

Automated Directory Assistance is what I got when I called the number back.  I guess I'll have to answer when the call again, which I'm sure will be soon. Whoever they are calls about everyday.

Just as a follow-up, I did some checking and found the calls may come from California, Oregon and even Idaho. It appears they have multiple operations and, indeed, may have poeple working from their home, which explains why when I trapped a number and called it back, I got an oriental person who didn't speak English very well, but could still hear the same sounds in the background as on the original call. Pretty devious operation for sure!

This is an alleged debt relief service that works from what we call a boiler room. They get your number if you ever inquire about a mortgage through one of those on-line servives such as Lending tree or others. They then hound you incessantly and will send you e-mails and phone calls and if you ask them to stop as you are on the DO NOT CALL list they say they will, but they won't. I also found they use a ruse that you initiated a "business transaction" with an afiliate company when you asked for information on a mortgage, etc. so they do not believe they are bound by the Do Not Call Law. That's assinine since that would apply to a magazine subscription or calling in an order for a pizza! I have asked the Secretary of State and Attorney General as well as the FCC to look into this, because they use bogus numbers so you cannot call them back and the phone company says that's completely legal. Guess who's side the phone company's bread is buttered on!

These guys called me & I think the telemarketer was a trainee--after one of those suspicious pauses they asked for someone who wasn't home & I responded "Sorry, they're not available, can I take a message for you?" Hilarious awkward pause and the guy finally said "um, I'll call back... um... This is First Nation Wide" and hung up. Lots of background chatter too.

Poor guy.

This was an automated call that said I have a call for you. Please hold.  A real person got on the phone and said they were from First Nationwide and they wnted to help us clear up our outstanding debts.  I told her we were on the National No Call List and please put us on their list and don't call again.  She very nicely said she would and I hung up.  We'll see.
