I received a call from this number at 1:39pm on 3/13/08 here in northern California.  The ID displays "CPYC" so I answered.  It sounded like a fax machine or modem.

Received a call from this number yesterday.  Answered call, and heard a single beep (similar to the one played once per minute when a conversation is being recorded), but no reply from caller.  Called number back, and after 5 or 6 rings, got an OGM announcing some nondescript business.  Called number a second time and got same OGM.

Telemarketer
Caller Id indicates CPYC.  916-729-6484.  Call was received at 9:30 pm.  No message left on answer machine.  They call every year asking for donations.  Haven't donated yet.  I ask to be removed from calling list every year.  There are better and more fiscally responsible organizations to donate to.  I prefer my church and the Boy Scouts of America.  They're like a bad infestation of fleas... you can't get rid of them.  For information do a Google on their organization (Cal Pal Fundraising Organization or CPYC)

I was always told the Police and the Fire Department NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER ask for donations of any kind over the phone.  If you write to that e-mail address to have your name and number removed from his list, is not a good idea and I'll tell you why.  They not only have your name and number, they will have your e-mail address also.  I reported them to the National Do Not Call Registry and I suggest all of you do also.  They can and will help you with this solicitor.

Just got a call here in Modesto 7:59 pm. Didn't answer and no message was left. These calls really p*ss me off since I am on the Do Not Call list. Where do they get off that they can get around that and call who ever and when ever they want? Is there any kind of recourse that we can take?

Check the Charity Navigator site. Organizations raising funds for law enforcement athletic leagues are notorious for hiring telemarketers instead of using volunteers.  The use men with deep voices primarily, which leads you to assume they're retired cops or off-duty volunteers. When they call, ask if they're volunteering or being paid. If they hum and haw, they're professional telemarketers and most of your donation is going toward their payroll.

Chris Eaton,

I shouldn't have to put up with harassment from the CPYC multiple times every year.

While I agree the CPYC is a wonderful program I do not like the way you do business. As far as the phone system goes...so be it no big deal.

It is the harassment for a donation that irritates me. The constant sending of letters and calls if you have donated or agree to donate. The way you say "Can we send some material?" And then you turn around and say "If you were to donate how much do you think you would donate $10 $50? How much are you donating today? Before I send this out I need to know how much you are donating?" I agreed you could send me literature so I could decide at my leisure if I will donate and how much. You use tricks and harassment to get donations. Letters that almost read like collection notices for a "donation" A letter every three days and phone calls every week, what jerks.

Either ask permission to send literature or ask for a donation straight up. The round about cheep tricks, word play, and bullying is lame.

I will not donate to the CPYC or the firefighters version of the same until you change your despicable ways. If your charity is so wonderful you shouldn't need to play stupid games. You bank on fear and stupidity instead of just asking up front.

I have tried many times to get off your list and yet multiple times every year you harass me.

I forgot to mention - each time they've called, they've never left a phone message. They call at various times of the day and night, too, always with that CPYC caller ID and the same 916-729-6484 number.

We've never picked up the phone when they've called.

We just want them to stop calling us! It's even more irritating since they keep calling our private unlisted number.

We've gotten several calls in recent months from that number(916-729-6484) with CPYC as the caller ID. They called our personal unlisted phone number - I have no idea how they got this unlisted private number, either.

At any rate, I'm sick of all these kinds of calls! We've got all the caller blocking we can have onto my phone numbers via our phone company service, but these folks and other telemarketers keep finding loopholes around them.

Don't they get the idea that people don't want to be bothered when they're on the Do Not Call registry, etc? Geesh. It's nuts.

Chris Eaton has been compared to the devil... Do not believe one word that man says...he had a falling out with the California police activities League and national Pal, because he is such a duech, The real guys... so in an effort to make money he started his own charity and over 85% of all the money goes into his back pocket... the rest they just donate to other charities, and best yet, take kids to raider games... Very productive...right??? any way without going to in depth... its total crap, major scam, KARMA is a BI***...Good luck Chris...

i was called by 916-729-6484 on the afternoon of September 25. caller i.d. said CA POLICE YC. i thought, why are the yuba city police calling me? i answered the call and got only fax sounds. i suspected a fundraiser, so i googled the number and found this site. thanks for the info. the only thing worse than telemarketers, is automated call setups such as these. it doesn't matter if you are on a "do not call" list, the machine will dial your number anyway. why isn't this illegal? oh yeah, probably because police and their fundraisers don't have to follow the laws that they are paid to enforce.

I got a call after 6PM on 9/24/07 The call was made to my Home number that I use as an in home office fax line I usually do not answer this line, most call are a fax anyone else calls my cell however when I saw that it was CA Police YC I thought I had better answer it thinking YC could stand for Youth Center might have something to do with my teenager ditching class or cutting school not that she has ever in the past but you can never be to sure anyway an old sounding man said Mrs. Jones? I said no wrong number he said it again this time more stern, I repeated my reply he then said Mr. Jones? I told him he had the wrong number for the third time he finally said oh, there is no one by the name of Jones belongs to this number!

The caller ID is very misleading if it did not say Police I never would have answered it!!!

Just got a call from a gentleman asking for a pledge with this number.  I did a lookup on the phone number of  1-916-729-6484 and saw the number is based in Citrus Heights, california.  I called their city's non-emergency police number of (916) 727-5500, and was told that the CA POLICE YC is a legit telemarketer representing a legit police charity (but not a police dept.).  I don't know how true this is, but figured someone may want to put in some more info on this.

Political Call
They called my house at 8:51 PM on 9/19/2007. I'm sorry but I think that thats a little to late to be calling. I do not support this cause, I file a report that a girl that was my best friend stole my purse, credit cards, and bank cards and ran them up! I had her on video camera, and the owners of the stores were able to idenified her when My mother brought in a picture. and still the police did nothing. That was back in Nov 27, 2006 last year! And because they never went and picked her up I'm still fighting her in court. My credit has been distroyed, and I get constant calls from collection's about all the bad checks she's wrote. And i'm on the donotcall.gov list! thank you very much!

While I can understand using a calling system like that, I find it very irritating to receive a call @ 9pm from the CA Police YC.  I had no idea what it was about, until I googled the number and found these postings.  But I do have to say, my parents live in Yuba City, which is what I thought the YC stood for after police.  Even though I know the area code is different, I was extremely worried !!!!
Your number should be listed as something besides CA Police....

I received a call on 09/15/07 at 11:47am.  Caller did not respond to my greeting but remained on the line.  I was only able to hear faint background noise (sounded to me like a television), so I ended the call approximately 15 seconds into the call.

I got a call from them and I declined quickly and hung up. I don't want to sound rude however if that really is the executive director writing that message, then I would suggest including a website and a place to remove your name and number. Just emailing someone can just as easily put your name and number on another list. Possibly even have your information sold.

The calls you are receiving are from an automated fundraisng line for the California Police Youth Charities. This is a legitimate non-profit organization that is doing mnay good things for kids in California. See www.calpyc.com. Unfortunately, the automated system is set up to call numbers off of a list. If it goes to voice mail, the system drops the call, thus no messages are left. If a person answers the call, the system automatically transfers it to an operator who then speaks to the person who answered the phone. Occasionally, when somebody answers the phone, the systems tries to find an operator and if they are all on a call, it drops the call. It is annoying and it is being worked on to fix this problem. There should always be a human caller on the other end. The complaints about caller ID showing Police are valid and we will work on that as well. If you would like off of the list, please e-mail jfpenn@sbcglobal.com with your name and the number you were called on. We will remove your name immediately. Sorry for any inconvenience. This number appeared on my caller ID, but the caller did not leave a message. I hate that! Obviously these people know exactly what they are doing as everyone has caller ID now and when one sees POLICE on the caller ID one will answer. If this is a fundraising group, as suggested by the above poster, I will not be contributing. If these people do not have respect for the person they are calling then they should not be receiveing any money from the public.

Got a phone call with caller i.d. as CA Police YC, same number called at 6:15 and hung up...no message as stated above by previous. Freaked us out all night because we didn't know why they didn't leave a message. Looked it up online to find "916-729-6484 Cal Pal Fund Raising Office". How annoying.
