Prank Call
I just got a call on my house phone as well, although this person is now claiming to be the Department of Justice. When I asked to find out more he told me he would transfer me to Detective Jones, and put me on hold, the person came on the line and it sounded just like the person I was initially talking to. I told "Detective Jones" that and they hung up on me. I called right back and their phone went straight to their answering machine.

I checked online for the Department of Justice's number and told them someone called me, they directed me to their fraud services which advised me to report it to the FBI at this number: 1-800-225-5324

Then I Google'd the fraudulent number that called me (917-460-4589) just to see what would come up, and found these posts. Hope these responses help anyone else who is receiving these fraudulent calls!

Political Call
I received a call from 911 for a man I could barley understand stating that I have a warrent for my arrest and to speak to my Lawyer. I was advised to call 917-460-4589 and give a case number. Once I call the number back the some call Mr. Johnson stated that I was going to be arrested for receiving funds that could not be debited from my account. However, the information that he provided was for an incorrect e-mail address that I would never receive money from nor did I take out any loan currently. These people called my work number and do not even know that I know that information provided is incorrect. When I advised the man of this information he said good luck and hung up on me. Very rude and nasty!

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

Here's what I don't understand.  If YOU are a victim of fraudulent activity why are they issuing a warrant for your arrest?  Aren't victims usually the ones pressing charges?  These idiots have no clue how stupid they sound,

I got a phone call this morning from an unknown number so i didn't pick up. the person said he was officer Spencer from NJ State Police. They left me a number to call which was the 917 number Dept. of Justice. they told me to go to the nearest police station or call the number and talk to Special agent Johnson. Or i would be arrested at my home or place of employment. Good luck getting me because i travel 9 months out of the year with my job. I have had calls like this in the past from California numbers saying the same thing. Just ignore them and go on with your business.

Said his name was Mr Watson from garbled State Police and my Security Number whatever that is was involved in a garbled investigation. I think he said to turn myself in to local police and or call Mr Johnson at the 914 number. He sounded like he might speak Hindi or Urdu at home this Watson and said I was subject to arrest ( by Taliban?) but he wished me good luck. No idea what this is about.

Sarah- I replied to "A VICTIM" and 'NO VICTIM".  I agree with your advice. The number that called me was from a "917" area code. He also said his name was Officer Smith and the person I needed to call was Federal Agent Johnson.  The 917 area code comes back to New York.  If the call was from a legal police agency they would identify themselves by name and badge number and tell you the call is being recorded.  I have reported these calls to the phone company and my local police.  Everyone with caller ID answers a call from 911, but -people-do not give them any info.  Ask as many questions as you can to get info from them. MY LOCAL POLICE SAID DO NOT RETURN THE CALL TO THE ABOVE NUMBER

I AGREE WITH YOUR ADVICE-IF ONLY PEOPLE WOULD LISTEN-ESPECIALLY SENIORS.  EVERYONE ANSWERS AN INCOMING CALL FROM 911 BUT THE POLICE WOULD FIRST START BE AN INTRODUCTION AND TELLING YOU THIS CALL IS RECORDED.

This sounds like the same caller I got-about the same information was asked and told. The best thing to do is report this incoming number-the number you were told to call-and the content to the phone company-your local police-and if you are listed on the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY.

This is not the first time I received a call from a number like this.  I was asked for personally, then the caller told me I was a victim of fraudulent activity.  When I asked how he got my number-the caller started speaking in a dialect faster then he did in the beginning so I couldn't hardly understand him.the call came in as "911" so I answered it.  The man then told me I need to contact this particular person who was the "Federal Agent" in charge of my case and gave me a name and a case # to reference.  He told me I had to call this number within 12 hrs. or a warrant would be issued for my arrest.  I told him I would call right away, but I am a senior and I am not that stupid and gullible. PEOPLE-ESPECIALLY SENIORS-PLEASE TAKE EXCEPTIONAL CAUTION AND DO NOT DO WHAT THEY ASK.  i REPORTED PREVIOUS CALLS TO THE PHONE COMPANY AND THE POLICE.PLEASE DO THE SAME.

Total scam. I get these calls ALL the time and the only reason I answered today was because it came up 911- which Im pretty sure should be illegal... Stated he was calling from the office of police in Minnesota. Um, what? I also said I needed to call this number & talk to Federal Agent Johnson (sounds legit, right?) I could BARELY understand him because his english was so bad but his name was Officer Smith. I just laughed & just kept saying of course Ill look in to this right away. My husband is an attorney & there have been SO many complaints filed against these people. I have about 70 numbers blocked in my phone because they call & threaten legal action constantly. Its funny its a "Minnesota Federal case" but the number to call to talk to the federal agent is a 917 area code. Dont fall for it. Theyre a***oles & will NOT stop. I finally had an attorney answer the phone & ask specific details- which they legally have to tell you- and they got super nasty.

When I called back this number they claimed it was the Department of Justice but it seems to be either a Google Voice number or MagicJerk number and they are all a bunch of foreign scammers trying to rip everyone off.  The unfortunate thing is that no one in the Secret Service or FBI or any other legitimate law enforcement agencies will even take a complaint when you call them about this group of scammers.

I received multiple calls today from the 911 # and they left me a message with this call back #.  When i answered he said he was from the United States Police.  I said really the USA police and he simply said yes.  He then went on to say the same thing about an investigation on my name and SS#.  Dont fall for this scam i have received calls in the past about people threating legal action if you dont pay something or give them your SS#.  If it was a legal situation they would send you a letter in the mail or call from a real number not masking it with 911.

I received a call yesterday at 4pm from an emergency number and told me to call this number. When I called I was put on hold so I could be transfer to my " investigating officer" which was the same person that originally answered, a foreigner. They told me I was under investigation for fraud, check fraud, and something else. They said I received funds from a cash advance that was direct deposited to my bank account. First I never got funds from a cash advance second I do not have a bank account. This man told me he was reading me an affidavit and said a warrant would be issued for my arrest. When I started asking him the difficult questions like what cash advance place and where is my signature he couldn't give answers and got mad told me have a good time in prison and hung up. Who are these people and how do they have all my information.

Called using a masked #. Came in as a 911 call. When pressed, the person (I could hardly understand) gave me this # as a call back. He stated this is a police investigation in Nevada, yet it is a New York phone #.
