What do they want from me?
smk 2010-02-19 02:08:32 Unknown
UNBELIEVABLE!! I fell for this jerk's schtick even after someone else I know did, too!! I just didn't put the two together until later. He came to my home in Durham (near Roxboro and Club) on Sunday. Said his name was Derrick and he lived a few houses down & was a student at the Theology school. His girlfriend was a flight attendant for Southwest--they had "seen me around." He was "so embarrassed to ask" but they had "wine parties" every so often and I should come to the next one. He needed $26 so I took $20 from my wallet and $6 from my 12 year old son's, since he would be right back to return the money. I'm a single mother struggling to get by! He called two numbers from my cell phone: 919-325-9566 and 919-653-9566. I hope he gets caught soon and gets a good taste of karmic retribution!

I just saw the guy's mug shot in the Duke Chronicle.
This happened 2 weeks ago:
Driving on the way to church, the guy stops my car and pretends to be a pastor of a church with a busted tire. He was well-dressed and carrying a Bible and all. Asked to be dropped off at a tire place and for money to cover his tires because they didn't take American Express. Once in the car, he asked to be dropped off somewhere else - in the ghettos. I had no idea where I was. Somewhere near University and Old Chapel Hill Rd

I happened to me today.
I claimed he was seeing me all the time because he is my neighbor. He said he's attending the NCCU law school and asked me if I am going to college. He asked to use my cell phone because he got his car locked. He was calling 919-633-95633 (yes, this is how he called with my cell phone.) Just after, he told me his friend Kelly did not answer and asked me to give a ride to NCCU. I refused it. He left then.
He is a small African American about 5'6 to 5'8. He's wearing a leather jacket.
I am living by the hwy 55 close to MLK, Durham.
I will add this post to the 919-633-9563 and 919-633-95633 number too.

According to a neighbor of mine, Kevin Edward Ross gave a different phone number today for his supposed flight attendant girlfriend: 919-852-3442. I have entered the first comment on that number today: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-919-852-3442
Here is Ross's mug shot from his arrest by Raleigh PD in June 2009: http://tr.im/Agbw

This guy was in Greensboro about 4 years ago. He approached us when we were walking the dog with the story about being locked out, flight attendant girlfriend, yada yada. We didn't buy into the story, but the point is this guy has been at it for YEARS. Just glad he is finally where he belongs - jail!
NearDuke 2009-07-26 23:21:14 Unknown
Well, apparently someone else has taken Kevin's place. As I was getting groceries out my trunk just now, an African American man in a blue shirt, khaki shorts, and a baseball cap approached me with the same BS story, asking for $28. I told him I knew it was a scam, and he walked away quickly.
This isn't the original guy who tried the same scam on us a few months ago.

The man was finally arrested today. His name is Kevin Edward Ross 41 years old. There is a photo on the news article about his arrest and there is no question this is the man that scammed us - here is the link:

In case the link is broken search for "Scammer wins confidence by saying he knows you" on www.newsobserver.com or www.google.com .
Glad he finally got caught!! Good job and Thank You to all the people that called 911 and the Raleigh Police.

He just stopped by our place near Brier Creek. Same story - he's a student at duke, works at IBM, and is married to a woman upstairs... I called him out on his b***s***, but not before I offered my phone for him to make a call to this number. After I called him out, he acted freaked out and walked away pretty fast. Just called the police and they should be here soon - he stopped by our place at 1:30am.
iw 2009-06-03 19:58:01 Unknown
oh, and he was maybe mid 30's, 5'7, black, bald/shaved, green nautica polo that was too big for him. talked real fast/nervous. talked about being in a mixed race marriage with a flight attendant, going to duke for his mba, etc.
iw 2009-06-03 12:51:24 Unknown
He hit here too. southeast durham. seemed like he was digging for personal info, phone number, employers, info on my neighbors and a peek in my apartment. based on what he already knew about my neighbors, he's either lucky or he's been casing our street to see who lives where. he was also very quick and clever with his lies. thats alot of work and risk to go to for 25 bucks. i get the feeling he's scouting for burgling.
busy guy, hunh?

Last night, same story, new location-- Green Mill Lane, Durham, just off MLK Blvd. near Hope Valley Rd. Said he was a neighbor and gave a house number right down the street. He didn't look familiar but I wanted to give a neighbor the benefit of the doubt.
Richard 2009-05-31 01:03:11 Unknown
Amazing. He got me last night in Durham. He said his name was Terry and he was married to a white woman. He said they say hello to me all the time when I walk my dog. I loaned (gave) him $20. He gave me the exact same story about his car. Same routine, he borrowed my cell phone and called this number. Something told me I was being conned. He even mentioned the name of one of the maintenence men that work here.
orulz 2009-05-28 00:12:30 Unknown
Tom, you're the man. Please call RPD at 919-996-3335 to let them know.
tom 2009-05-27 23:30:51 Unknown
it's me again Tom. Another thing came to mind is that the year of his car model is toyota corolla, from 1993-1997.
tom 2009-05-27 23:27:25 Unknown
he was at my house this afternoon. He drive in a toyota corolla, green color. His license plate is xxl. 8... (He wear a green shirt and jean)

If you live in Raleigh, and this person(s) approaches you and asks for a ride, money, or to use your phone and calls this number, please call the Raleigh Police Department and file a report. While you might think this is not worth your time, it is the only way we have to track his movements and actions and have a chance at catching him. Thank you!
orulz 2009-05-27 18:49:25 Unknown
Quick, somebody get the plate # off his car... I'm kicking myself for not doing that.
RPD called me and had me look at a photo lineup this AM. They said the lineup included some potential suspects who did a similar thing in 2005-2006. I didn't see the guy in the lineup, but I can't help but second guess either.
Tracy C 2009-05-27 15:28:43 Unknown
I think I saw him this am on Clifton Street in Mordecai. He did stop at a neighbors house.
MarkTurner.Net 2009-05-27 14:08:32 Unknown
This guy was working the Mordecai neighborhood in Raleigh this morning. Same story.
He is described as an African American man, late 30s, and about 5' 9". He was wearing a red polo shirt and jeans. He is driving an older teal Toyota Corolla with faded paint on the hood.
Raleigh Police are looking for him now.
Lexi 2009-05-26 20:32:26 Unknown
So this guy just came to my house too, same story, and my question is what did he look like? Is this the same guy or is it different guys using the same story? And just so others in my area know . . . I'm located in North Raleigh so watch out.
orulz 2009-05-26 18:58:45 Unknown
guess I was born yesterday. fell for it in W Raleigh. He actually looked kind of like a guy who lives down the street that I don't know. Hope he burns in hell.
joe 2009-05-26 00:39:37 Unknown
Yup happened to me to. asked to use the phone and money for a tow truck
RT 2009-05-25 07:00:57 Unknown
And another. This person just stopped at our house and 2 (at least) of the neighbors. Called RPD and they were sending a car to our street. Said he was locked out of his car, needed $26 and Jennifer would be greatful we had halped.
Miranda 2009-05-21 23:22:09 Unknown
By the way, I'm in Chapel Hill, so apparently he has graduated from Durham (though admittedly, right near the border of the two).
Miranda 2009-05-21 23:03:34 Unknown
Yep, just happened to us too. Bummer, we were hoping he was genuine. :(
MD 2009-05-21 16:03:11 Unknown
Add one more to the list. I think that the worst part is that my phone smells like his cheap cologne. If you noticed, he apparently was using a napkin as a pocket silk!!! - folded neatly into a triangle pattern. If he would have promised to use the $26.00 for new clothes and some mouthwash, I may have given it to him. Instead, he gets nothing except for my wishes of his painful death.
A 2009-05-21 15:27:27 Unknown
He just came to my house in Camden Park off of Glenwood - asked to use my phone, for money and for a ride. Said he was locked out of his car, but had a white woman sitting in a car at my neighbors house waiting for him. He used my phone, called 966-4800 and then left.
