First, let me say that I've had my card through Providian, and then WaMu since 2001.  Since WaMu is always merging with other banks, the names are always changing (I think it's becoming Chase soon).  Also, my online access had been blocked.

So, I received two calls this morning.  The first was from caller ID 'California' 925-738-0226 (which I missed) and the second was from 'Providian' 925-738-0214 (which I answered).  The Indian gentleman on the phone asked me for the last four digits of my card number and to verify my phone number and address.  He then asked me about 4 charges totaling approximately $550 on my card that I had not made and verified some charges I had made.  He then asked me some questions about traveling, where I used the card, where I keep the card, etc.  I answered all his questions, including the exp. date on the card, and he said he would cancel our current cards and send me new cards for my wife and I.

I immediately called WaMu just to verify the first call was legit and they confirmed that it was.  My online account access is no longer blocked, either.  So, unless the scam artists are fraudulently displaying the same phone number on your caller ID, this is not a scam so don't listen to the people above who say it is.  If you're getting these calls, you need to call WaMu immediately so you're not stuck with the fraudulent charges.

I tried to use my Wamu card to pay for a plane ticket on a foreign airline. The charge didn't go through and I missed a call from this number a few minutes later.

I am sure it is just a security precaution because all of a sudden my card is being charged by some company in Peru...In my case it is a legitimate charge, but I understand why this is red-flagged and they follow up with the card holder...Seems to be legitimate to me.

I received a call from 925 738 0227.  They answered as Wamu Fraud Dept "Can I have your account # please"?  I told the Indian man I wasn't going to give him any information because how do I know he's from WAMU?  He stumbled over his words.  He offered to transfer the call to the WAMU Debit card Fraud Dept (apparently he was calling about my WAMU credit card - I don't have one).  I said don't transfer me to someone else in your building who's going to tell me they're from WAMU.  You're still not getting any info from me.  I called WAMU Fraud Dept.  THEY DO NOT HAVE A DEPT USING THIS PHONE NUMBER OR ANY PHONE NUMBER FROM THE 925 AREA CODE (Southern California)  THIS IS A SCAM - DON'T GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION.  WAMU DOES NOT CALL AND SOLICIT PERSONAL INFORMATION FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Turns out it is not a scam.  Providian is the credit card end of Wamu.  They certainly have a stupid way of going about checking on fraudulent charges, but it IS Wamu.  My husband was furious when he on the phone with Wamu.  They were asking seriously personal questions.  First SS#, then name of our elder son, what was his address??????  My husband refused to answer and had to threaten to close the account when he finally got the manager who asked him what his problem was...... My husband asked him what was HIS SS# and where did HIS son live.  They got the message and are going to allow my husband to show picture ID at a wamu bank to get the card activated again. (which they did not offer as an option up until this point) What a stupid way to do business!

I received a call this morning just before 9am.  the 0214 #.  A recorded message asked if I was my husband who was on a business trip, if so press 1.  Worried it was a call about unauthorized credit card usage, I pressed 1.  It then asked if I had used my card, and gave the last 4 digits, at an Amoco station on Dec. 17.  It then said if yes, press 1, if not, press 2.  If I would like more information about the transaction, press 3 which I did.  It said the transaction was for $1.00 ...... I hung up at that point. When I call the # back it just rings.  Called my husband, he hasn't used it for $1.00 anywhere.  He's calling Wamu now.  I'm interested in hearing what they have to say.  I'll post when I hear.

I had a missed call on my cell.  They called back later and recorded message was fraud prevention with WAMU.  I followed the promts until I received a real person.  She requested personal information.  I told her that I was not comfortable since I had seen this web page.  She said she understood and gave me another number to call. 800-480-7230 which is also listed on this site.  I then tried to log into my credit card account online and it has been blocked.  At that point I contacted my husband, since it is his card, and instructed him to contact the number on the back of his card.  He had made an online charge the same day.

Got several calls from 925-738-0214 today. I didn't recognize so didn't pick up. They finally left a computer based voice mail using my exact name and last numbers of my credit card saying to call WaMu fraud prevention at 800-849-3574. I suspected scam so called the number on the back of the card instead. The card has been unused (by me) and locked in my safe since August. Customer service said there was a charge on it 2 days ago at "The Body Shop". That could either be an online cosmetics company or online porn. I don't purchase either. In any case the charge had been declined. Wamu has already locked the account and are sending me a new card with a new account number. They made no attempt to sell me anything. For me at least it was a 100% legit call. Thank God! I'm unemployed right now and ID theft is the LAST thing I need to happen. If you get this call it may be worthwhile to call the number on your card to check it out just to be on the safe side!

called at 8:00 a.m. on May 10, a Saturday morning. The caller ID identified the number as being from Providian, but we don't have a Providian credit card or loan or anything with them and, of course, they did not leave a message.

3 calls today (925-738-0214) last one asking me to call back regarding a credit card ending ####, wishing me to call back 800-849-3574 -- I am on the do not call registry and will be reverse chasing them using all legal means... adding myself to the registry should not be scaring up these knuckleheads. Earlier I got 3 calls from 800-728-3902. If they are related I can likely establish a reason to fine them big time.

I originally got a call from 925-738-0227 maybe 10 minutes after trying to use a credit card to pay for something online. When I made the payment, I had a message pop up on my screen telling me that my card issuing bank wanted to know if I was interested in signing up for a free service they offer which protects you from unauthorized online purchases made with your card. I selected the "No thanks" option. The call was a recording saying the call was for me and gave my name exactly as it was on my card. I just hung up on the recording. The next morning I got another call, same recording, but this time from 925-738-0214

This is WaMu Fraud Protection. I got the call also. I did not call that number back, but instead I called the number on the back of my card. They confirmed that they had put a block on my card to verify a withdrawal attempt.

It could be WAMU fraud, but I think a phishing company is also using this as a Caller ID number (those can be faked) to make people enter thier info. So be careful if it is not a live person.

This call was at first an automated number in which it asked if you made "suspicious" transactions on your credit Card. At first it ask if you authorized them if you did then the call drops...I assume. Ifyou didnt then a specialist would confirm your information and ask you personally if "unauthorized" purchases were made.
A "Jane" asked me regarding some EXTREME purchases and I did not authorize such purchases. So she cancelled the card and reissued me a new card and the previous balance I had would transfer over to my new card. and I had to sign some identity fraud paperwork and send it back to her. At first I thought this was weird...but relieved that someone was having a watchful eye on my information. We shall see in 7-10 business days.
