I did the same thing, pressed 1 for more info on lowering my credit card rate- I told the person to stop calling & take me off their calling list & guess what, they hung up on me. I have attempted this several times & have also reported their various #s to the Do Not Call Registry but I still get calls every day. Maybe the answer is to get rid of credit cards...

If you got a call from this number or frequently get these types of calls I would suggest asking yourself if there is anyone who has a grudge against you. I've been cyber stalked, hacked and harassed by a Georgia based con artist and serial cyber stalker named Mike Smeth for nearly 2 years now.

Prior to him defrauding me out of thousands of dollars I had never recieved a call like this. Since then I've received well over 100. I strongly believe he may have submitted my number to scammers or may be running the scams himself. It wouldn't surprise me - the fraudster is a former meth addict who appears on mugshotsonline and makes a living by defrauding people out of money and then terrorizing his victim's lives through a computer.

He additionally lives on my home network and launches attacks at anything with an electronic pulse (DoS, MITM, etc). He's also hacked, cyber stalked and harassed family members, friends and business partners. We unaffectionatly refer to him as the "Jeffrey Dahmer" of hackers. Getting away with crime isn't enough for him, he has a sick desire to terrorize his victim's lives.

I've also received non-stop harassing and malicious texts in addition to spoofed calls pretending to be law enforcement and voice mails featuring nothing but computer keystrokes. I decided enough was enough and decided to go through my phone records and leave this post under all the malicious calls I've received since Smeth began his cyber stalking campaign against my life on 4/22/11 (day he defrauded me then proceeded to attempt to blackmail me into signing documents that would absolve him of defrauding me out of well over $25,000).

Just a thought. I felt my story was worth mentioning. You can never be to safe when it comes to technology in the year 2013. Criminals have ditched the real world for cyber space. Good luck and I hope your situation isn't as bad as mine :) If it is as bad don't be afraid to stand up for yourself, you have the right to be left alone.

P.S. - One of Smeth's fictional online personas may leave a comment after this comment to harass me into hiding but I've absolutely had it with this sociopathic cyber stalking con artist. I even had to stop using Facebook and Twitter as a result of being harassed by his army of fictional people. Also, he may ask to have this comment removed as a result of having malicious access to my browsing history. Whatever you do DO NOT take this comment down. People deserve to be warned about Michael Alexander Smeth and need to know that calls like these can be the result of someone maliciously submitting your name to these fraudsters. #Truth #VictimsHaveRights #ConArtistWarning-MikeSmeth #CyberStalkerWarning-Mike Smeth

Came on my cell phone. Did not answer. If it was important the caller should leave a message.  No message was left.  From this site I would guess it was a scam as others have noted. Really annoying (and illegal) but with robo callers and spoofing the FCC is having a problem doing anything.

It is annoying, but I just add them to my selective blocking offered my Time Warner here in NY. I did answer the phone because I do have a friend in the 940 area. The male voice (recording) said..lol.. don't you dare hang up the phone on me..can you believe that? I just cracked up and hung up. I put the number on my blocked list.
I blocked a number last week, and 10 mins later the phone rang again, the ID said..0. Right..0. I usually don't answer any call when I don't know the number.

The only defense is to dial one and call who ever picks up the line by the most offensive name available. Keep in mind that they are worthless scum who have completely abrogated their right to be treated with any sort of respect.  If enough of us treat them in such a manner they will be discouraged in their "jobs" and pursue meaningful employment.

There is one fake SSN that you might be able to give out, namely that of some named  Mrs. Hilda Schrader Whitcher.  See http://www.ssa.gov/history/ssn/misused.html

If you are absolutely sure that someone is trying to steal your identity, this is probably as close as you can get to a "safe" SSN to give somebody, although I would make sure to file a written police report immediately thereafter to let them know what I did.  This is just an observation, however, and is not meant or intended as advice.  You should still check whether you might get into trouble if you did any of this.

Did you ever stop to think that just maybe the "fake credit card" and "SS#" you came up with could belong to one of the billion(s) of people in the United States?

I see your point and,..yes,.. it would be fun to jack with them but I'm fearful that just on the some odd chance the numbers you come up with could belong to someone out there somewhere and you could cause them hardship when you're really not meaning to.

I too would love to screw around with them and throw away their time and money but haven't due to the face I don't to cause damage and extra work for someone who really has nothing to do with anything.

Rang mobile. Tiffany with usual "last chance to lower CC interest rate." I have a prepared spoof script with phoney name, age, description H & W, vehicle, special e-mail address just for this purpose, phoney password, phoney ss#, correct 1st 4 numbers for debit and credit cards, phoney last 12 numbers, phoney ex-dates and CVC, correct toll-free number for credit card (matches first 4 number code), etc. There are websites (I am afraid I don't have the list) where you can get a phoney ss# generated (it is not real and won't work, but sounds good for the spoof) and same for fake (will not work/not real) credit cards.  Ready with all this (I kep the script next to the phone, I pressed 1 to pull the leg of the CSR. She answered "Card Services" and then disconnected. I am very disappointed.

The FCC has temporarily halted 7 minor unprofitable boiler rooms who will receive a slap on the wrist and be back at it within a few days. In the meantime the calls will continue since they are making money with what is called a CNAM revenue-sharing program through companies like http://www.telephonemanagement.net and http://www.CallerID4U.com
In their own words:  'Every day your company makes thousands of outbound phone calls. Every one of those calls generates revenue for many companies, why not yours? Our CNAM revenue-sharing program helps you make money every time a Caller ID request is made by a phone carrier. A high-traffic call center can lose hundreds to thousands of dollars a day to phone carriers by allowing them to charge for access to your own data.'

You can now see why the criminals keep calling even though they know you won't fall for their scam. They are making money even if you don't answer the phone. If someone does make the mistake of answering the phone and falling for their con then it is just icing on the cake for them.

What To Do When You Get an Illegal Robocall; http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/robocalls
1.    Hang Up. Do not press 1 or any other numbers to get off the list and NEVER call them back
2.    Consider blocking the number or on a cell phone add it to a contact list and assign NO ring tone
3.    Report it at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints
4.    Report it at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov
5.    People should continually file complaints with their Attorney Generals office
Register your phone numbers online at http://www.donotcall.gov or call (888) 382-1222 (must call from # you want removed).

There is a blog site that has information on one of these operations:     http://telemarketerspam.wordpress.com
Please read the blog and report violations to the proper authorities.

I called AT&T and told the Indian girl in India that these people are phishing a phone number which is a felony. I told her to report it since they have the logs with all the origination information in the metadata. You people should do the same.  The wire services people know this goes on.....but refuse to track it down and refuse to block the call from their client base. This isn't the response profile we are paying for.
