First call was at about 8:20 pm from my area code. A woman with a thick accent called to inform me that I was selected to receive a government grant of $7,000.00 because I pay my bills on time and I am not in bankruptcy. I immediately know it is a scam because I actually am in bankruptcy, but that is another story. I tell her to send me the information in the mail and hang up.
Two days later, again after 8pm, I get a call from the same number. First I hear a phone ring, then a different woman with a thick accent gives me the same story so I play along. They will be happy to mail me a check, but I am encouraged to have it deposited in my bank account so I can have it in an hour! No, thanks, a check will be fine. So Ellen Smith tells me my verification code is NK124 and I have to call 202-624-6892 to claim my grant.
I Google the number and find a website where I learn the rest of the story - which is that when you call the second number another person with a thick accent and an ordinary American name asks more questions then informs you that you must make a donation to a specific "charitable organization" in order for the funds to be released.
I notified the Sarasota Police Department right away. There are so many seniors around here who won't know any better it really scares me to think of what havoc these people can wreak!
If they call you please notify the local police immediately!
If you have already seen this posting it is because I am posting it on every site I can find1

I had the call too. When I returned the call twice, no answer either time. I hope something legal can be done. Well, "legal" is optional.

Called tonight at 11:30 pm. Man with a very thick accent. I think he said something about Video Professor at which point I interrupted him and said It's 11:30 at night...Do you think it is ok to call here? He said oh ok I'll call tomorrow and I said nope you'll never call me again. We'll see. There was a lot of noise in the background like he was calling from a call center.

I just got one on my cellular phone from this number. It was a male, with an accent of some sort, I couldn't understand what he wanted.

Picked up the call but nobody was there, just a clicking sound.
