My step mom's mother just fell for this scam. She didn't give them any credit card info or anything, but I'm concerned on what they might have done/do after she gave them remote access to her desktop. For the time being, I have had her disconnect her computer from the internet (until I can get over there and possibly reformat it). Her husband owns his own business and has all sorts of invoices and accounting info on the computer... Scary stuff.

A thought though, I work for a phone company and was able to at least track the phone number back to the carrier (Bandwidth.com - great company; I'm sure the ISP/Phone company I work for has its own share of scammers as customers); what would be great though, is if somehow these kind of people could be counter scammed. The hacktivist group Anonymous is always taking on social causes; maybe taking out b*****ds like these would prove for some sporting fun.

Complete scam.  I got this call waking me up from my precious sleeping time after a full night shift, so I grumpily went along with it to torture the person calling.  I found he deserved it since he was claiming to represent Microsoft calling me, said "Microsoft never calls their customers," and then denying that he was a 3rd party brought in by Microsoft to take care of accumulated error reports sent to their servers.  Never gave a reason why error reports were sent elsewhere when I was the one in front of said computer.

He even had the balls to say, "My god" when I told him the error count on my window.  I very nearly broke character and started laughing at him.

About the time he asked me to enter some web addresses right into the web address window (which could instantly begin a downloading process depending on the URL entered), I instead Googled his company as he told me the name, iRed.comyr.com, came here, and started reading the comments aloud to him.  He lasted 3 minutes in silence before he finally hung up on me.  Seems he was fine with being called a con man, criminal, and fly-by-night tool, but having his con blown in front of his face was a bit too much for him.

There is nothing we can do to stop these calls.  I have contacted Comcast, the Oregon Attorney General's Office, and Microsoft.  They tell me to hang up and not to give them any personal information.  I'm job hunting and I'm using these guys to take the out the stress of having a bad day.  I'll ask them for their names and how their families are doing.  I'll let them know that I just got a message on my screen that their computer has the "mad cow disease virus" and they need to pay me $250.00 to "pay idiot" for me to remove the virus from their computers.  I told them if do not pay me right away and allow me to correct the problem their computer will not work unless they eat 10 Triple Whoppers at Burger King within the next two days.  Then I tell the person I'm standing outside their door and the police are coming in right now to arrest them for committing a felony in the United States.  The immediately hang-up when I hold my scanner up to the phone.

Just got a call from this number. I was able to waste over 11 minutes of "Ronny's" time while I was cooking dinner. I was also able to record part of the call for laughs. Said he was calling to fix the errors in my computer.

Just got my second call.... last one was about 6 weeks ago.  That time it was a company called HELPUS247, and they ID'd themselves as being contracted with Microsoft to monitor their networks and that a virus had hit my computer and that all of my information is being linked all over the internet.  Like others, he tried to tell me that my CLSID number was unique to me and if the reason they knew it was because that info was being leaked all over the place.  He told me that SVCHost.exe was what was causing it and  when I said that I had AVG... and this is hilarious... the way he had me test it was to type in after the command prompt: AVG, is it working?  LOL  Of course it came up AVG not recognized.  I did fill out an FTC complaint on this, but I don't think it will go anywhere.  Like others have said... they're offshore and aren't going to react to do not call lists and BBB's, etc. Microsoft themselves would probably be more able to put some pressure on India, etc.... but since they have thousands of employees there and it probably provides a decent amount of sales.... not much would be in it for them.

Today it again started with them saying it was a Microsoft Contractor... yada yada yada.  I responded with "Bull$hit Bull$hit Bull$hit" and hung-up.

We get these calls 3 to 4 times a day, always come up as "Name Not Found" and the 948-547-6077 number.  It's getting old, they must get enough people to fall for it and make some money off of it, so they'll keep calling as long as it's profitable.

I got this call from the number above just minutes ago, the guy said he was with Microsoft tech support, and said that my system has sent them alot of error messages that are going to destroy my PC, as my PC has been acting up a bit and I did just send an error report 2 days ago at first although still skeptical I played along to see where he was leading me.
He asked me to "look for the circle in the bottom left hand side of my screen" in a really bad accent that caused me to ask him to repeat what he was saying tree times... anyways I told him I had 3 circles in the bottom left corner of my screen he asked me "what is the furthest circle to the lower left corner" I told him it was Google... then he continued to tell me to click the "start menu" on the bottom and look for "computer" right here I knew this wasnt a legit Microsoft call because if it was they would know I am running Win8 and dont have that Start Menu like WinXP or the others do.... anyways I continued to play along...

I asked him "where is it you want me to go" he said "single right click on my computer, and tell me what options you can see in the drop list" at this point I am getting a little pissed off, I asked him who he was with again and he replied again that he was with Microsoft and that I had registered a licence key under the name whos name I wont say here, but fact was the name he gave me was my grandfathers name... and my grandfather has been dead for 2 years... I have been living at my grandmothers place with her and my son for about a year and I just purchased this computer less than a year ago.... so how my grandfather become the licensed user of my computer is a mystery to me....hahaha anyways I told him he was full of s***, and that there was no way that the person he mentioned was the person on my licence key... and by the time I was finished ranting he had hung up.

Caller ID on my land line gave this number: 948.547.6077. He said I had over 500 add-ons and they were slowing down my computer. Ironic, since I just cleaned up my add-ons and did a disk cleanup this morning. I kept telling the guy I couldn't understand his accent (which I couldn't), then he actually tried to get me to log on to team viewer! I gave him the runaround just for fun and he supposedly passed me off to technical support then came back on the phone himself. Even with the accent, I could tell it was same guy. I realize people just want to make a living, but this is b.s.

They have called me 3 times claiming to have error messages from my Microsoft computer. SCAM ALERT. Once day they called and asked for my neighbor across the street. Clearly they have a list of addresses and phone numbers. They say they are an authorized company but they are crooks looking for a payoff. Creeps and jerks.

This number is a phishing number.. possibly...  I think  looking for info to scam people or access their computers, then all the online stuff on the computer.
He stated he was with IT Rand(??) out of NY. Hard to understand with his Indian accent. He was stating that my computer was informing them of an error that he was calling to help me with. When I asked which company again, after telling him no one was on the computer, he hung up.

I believe our US Attorney General is Holder.. however, you can google  *insert state name here* Attorney General.  And yes, do file a complaint with them, and then go send your legislators a letter also about these scams going on! FTC& FCC also.

You need to realize though that most of these calls are robo dialed, and they are most likely in a foreign country and we can't touch them unless the Government of that country co-operates with ours to make a big bust.

Sadly, many people have fallen for this so they keep on doing it!

Guy called and said that my computer was reporting questions and that he would help me through the issues.  I suspected it was a scam but was curious about what they were trying to do - so I played along.  He told me to click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner and I told him I have a Mac he said "what?" and I said I had a Mac and if he were getting reports from my computer he should probably know that.  He then hung up.  Next time I want to play along a little further and waste as much of their time as possible.

I'm a little worried that they might take advantage of others though.

Does anyone know who we report this to in the United States?

I got the same call ..it was obviously a scam, but I played along ... after having him take me thru some different things on my PC, he wanted access remotely ... so I said, "Well, you've taken up enough of my time, but I've taken yours as well ... one less person to scam, scumbag!" and hung up.  What an obvious ploy.

Like most of the reports above, I got calls from this number -- in fact, two just today, which is what got me looking up this phony-baloney area code so I could, maybe, find a way to report or stop them.  Pretty annoying.  I wasn't about to play along cuz I've got WAY better things to do.  A male with a heavy Indian or Pakistani accent identified himself as a Microsoft technician who had been monitoring my computer and he was VERY concerned about the error messages he had been receiving.  I have received many similar calls in the past and knew instantly this was bogus, so I let him talk for all of 15 seconds.  I cut in and told him he was wrong about the error messages.  He insisted that no, he was correct and that I was in DANGER of my computer breaking down almost immediately.  I laughed and yelled, "You are a liar because I don't HAVE a computer."  His answer was, "Whaaaat?  Yes you do, everyone has a computer."  I said, "B***S**t, dear," and hung up.  I do have a computer, but I figured his lie deserved one back.  I doubt that this will get me off the call list, but I felt slightly better.

I have been getting calls from this number or from an "Out of Area" one in which the number does not appear and in both instances they tell me "your computer has been sending us messages" Sure buddy! You expect ME to believe that? I tried to block this number and the phone carrier's block service will not block it as it says it's not a legitimate number.

I got a call from this number this morning. He said he was calling from the IRS - and that there was a problem with my computer. The story changed part way through the call. First there was fraudulent activity or something traced to my computer, then it was that I had a virus. I told him I didn't believe him.

Yes, these guys call over and over again. I have worked in IT for 30 years, much of it involving networks and security. One of the times I let the guy walk me through their "problem determination" process and he had me go to the event viewer so I could see that I had an error and needed them to connect to my computer to show me the problem and correct it (you always have errors showing up in the event viewer). I asked him how the bonjour service (legitimate service from Apple) could possibly be causing me a security problem. He just kept on insisting that they needed me to connect to their share so that they could walk me through it, and repeating that they were MSE certified (when their script opens with language that implies they are from Microsoft). Anyway, at this point I told them there was no way I woud be granting them access to my computer and to not call me again. He kept trying to make his sale so I said goodbye and hung up. Maybe two minutes later he called back and basically was asking why I hung up on him, so I told him I wasn't interested and not to call back again. Needless to say, they continue to call...

Never, ever, provide information to someone that calls you out of the blue. If you suspect you have a problem, do some research and then call a reputable organization. Even if someone calls you from what you believe to be a reputable organization, even some you do business with like your bank or utility company etc, never provide them any personal information, because they would never do this. If they lead you to believe that you should be concerned about your account or something like that, hang up and call their customer service number (readily available by doing a web search, or looking at your bill if you have a copy). Call them yourself and find out if you really have the problem that someone was calling you about.
