Prank Call
Just got the call from this odd (111) number.  Said "California Call", which 949 is, and they didn't leave a message of course.  I don't answer any of these unknown BS numbers as 98% of them are scams or solicitations, so why bother.  Appreciate EVERYONE'S REPORTS HERE as they sincerely do help me know that these calls are bogus!  Wish 800 Notes would kindly put the reports as newest first (hint-hint), though.  These spam calls are annoying and illegal as can be, but even if you answer them to vent your displeasure, it just signals your number as active so they, AND OTHERS, will call you more. Grrrr.

The number is NOT a valid telephone number, it is bogus.  Therefore, you cannot 'call the number back'.

Parts of this number are highly suspicious: "111" has been reported as part of the number "111-111-1111" since 2009. "666" has shown up in robo phone calls to my home phone (not that I'm superstitious about numbers in general).

As has been said "ad nauseum" and "ad infinitum" here at 800notes, the reason these monsters remain in business is because somehow or another, they are making money. If you see on your caller ID a number that does no make sense, with an ID that is weird, don't pick up the call!

Received the same recording: computer generating errors, etc. etc.  The recording is getting bad, lots of static.  I didn't push a number but then tried to call back the number.  The call did not connect and instead generated a message that said the number was not valid.   Has anyone successfully registered a complaint FCC or FTC and actually felt as if there was a response?

Yes, I just got a call from "Name Unavailable" 949-111-2666 and let it ring.  Meanwhile, I searched to find out if others have received calls. They have and they've reported it here.  Me too. We have to remember, we have the option whether or not to answer the phone.  I didn't thanks to others who have reported this number as a scam.  Thank you for your insight.

Hmmm... I wonder how they do that.  The first time I got a call from them, about 3 years ago, I had just purchased a new computer too.  I wonder is someone from BestBuy is furnishing names and phone number to the scammers.  When someone buys a new pc, they would be more likely to believe this BS story and comply.  I went all the way down into the directories and when he asked for the name of the file there, I told him I would call my IT guy and I did.  That's how I found out it was a scam.  In the past 3 years, or so, I must get a call a month from these creeps.  Now, if I happen to answer and it's a real person, I call them all the foul swear words I can think of and keep doing it until they hang up.  LOL  If I'm getting a call a month, just think... there must be millions of calls made by these scammers every month.  It seems like everyone I know gets them.  It must still be profitable or they would have quit by now.

The caller ID from this number said "name unavailable"

This is an old scam.  If you press 1 no doubt someone will be there to speak with you.  They will ask you to go down into your directories and see the name of a file in a certain directory, then they will say "oh, you ARE infected with the corrupt file and it's a serious security risk"  Then they will ask you for the name of the file in that directory.  If you tell them, they will have access to your computer and everything on it.  That's pretty much how that works.. maybe not exactly, but close enough.  NEVER even talk to these creeps!  I see they are getting lazy.  They used to call personally and now they make YOU call them so they can screw ya over.

Rec'd this on our landline - I never answer telemarketers, and I'm especially glad I didn't for this, because when I did a reverse phone look-up, the result was that there's no such number as 949-111-2666 - it's a bogus cover-up number for whatever number IS calling - I even tried to call the number on my cell and got a recorded msg that "the number or code is incorrect".  So....HUGE RED FLAG!!!  I'm guessing that this is not just an annoying telemarketer, but actually a scam of some type preying on people who don't know any better.

Got a call from these scamers @ 1:42pm 4 June 14. Just a hang up call, and being a ole fart that has retired, started keeping a log of these calls. It has reach the magic number of 250 robo calls, unwanted calls, for less than a year and will be posting a list of these call in the near future for everyone to enjoy. I hate to say this, but its time for the CEO's of phone company's that permit the harassment of the people be charged with a capitol crime and executed, might be a start on stoping this crap.

This is a new twist on the "Microsoft" (impersonator) ransomware scam.  Usually they just call you but this time a robo call informs you that you have malware and press 1 to speak with a Microsoft Certified Engineer.

I was going to play along (not really...) so I pressed 1, but the call disconnected after we exchanged pleasantries.

The objective is they get the unsuspecting to allow them to remote in to their computers, then lock them up and extort money to "fix" the problem.

I work for an IT support company and it's amazing how many people actually fall for this.

They've called me 3 times in the last 6 months, they've called my Mother in Canada twice (I'm in the US), and they've called countless clients of mine.  Must be working because they just keep improving on the scam.

Got a call from this number.  Guy with accent said my computer was sending out error messages and advised me to hit the windows button and the letter R (or F? not clear).  I told him that I thought he was confused about my computer and asked how he had obtained this information.  He said that I was confused about myself and hung up on me.

Man with hash Indian ascent called my cell phone trying to tell me I had a virus and he is with Microsoft and would fix it for me over the phone. I let him ramble on for about 5 min but I have better things to do than tease scammers so I informed him I'm a Unix/network admin that could probably write a book on computer security and if he's trying to scam me into installing a Trojan on my machine it's never going to happen. I also told him I'm pretty sure if I have a virus I'd know about it. He tried for about two sentences to play it off then got frustrated and hung up.

I purchased a laptop with Windows 8 in 2013.  As I was learning Win8 I immediately started getting phone calls from a guy with a heavy accent who claimed to be Windows and trying to get me to give him access to my computer and a credit card number to pay for whatever he wanted to download onto my computer.  He called me once a week, then monthly before it finally stopped.  Don't think his calls had anything to do with my new computer; however, I recently started getting email messages to download Win 8.1, so I did.  After downloading, I'm getting a lot of pop-ups and a virus.  Today, I received a call from 949 111-2666 I didn't answer but did look up the number for "NAME NOT FOUND", the name on my caller id.  I saw your post.  It's probably the same guy claiming to be Microsoft.  What an idiot!
