Ben and Carovan had the same experience as I, but they were smarter. I got a call saying that my computer was sending out error messages and that if I wanted to know more to press 1. I did and a man, with a very strong Asian accent, came on saying that he worked for MicroGeek and that they were the company that Microsoft used to fix any problems that arose. He said that I had serious problems and that they could help me. I probably screwed up because I let him have access to my computer, He showed me that many of my Microsoft applications had been stopped and said that my computer also had an application called csrss.exe which was a trojan. I was really incensed because I am currently in dispute with a company called Vangate which is associated with IOLO. I had previously purchased a product from them which was supposed to clean up my computer. This product was an earlier version of System Mechanic. My agreement with IOLO for this product was not due to end until August. In May, I tried to activate it and it did not respond. I called and a tech told me that it can only handle minor incidents but the problems with my computer were far beyond that and if I wanted to solve the problems I would need to sign up with their yearly service for $249. I really depend on my computer so I agreed. Five of their techs were given access to my computer and it is now slower and has more problems then before. For this reason, I gave this new  tech" some credibility. He connected me to TeamViewer and told me that I should sign up with them. I told him that I had no intention of signing up with anyone else until I had time to do some research. I asked for his number but he said he couldn't give it out over the phone but that the number should be on my phone. It wasn't. I still said I would not sign up so he said he would call me back today at 2:00 pm PDT ( my time zone). At 2 pm PDT, I got a call from 949-111-2666. I didn't answer it but wrote down the number. I tried to call it back, but was told I had insufficient numbers. Shortly after that, I got a call from 800 263 4041. Again, I did not answer and when I tried calling back that number I got inane music. I'm really frustrated. If anyone knows a reputable company that vets computers, I would really like to know the name of that company.

I am writing down the names of the companies he mentioned in his call, but a seriously doubt that he has any connection to either one. I think the call type would be spam, but you don't offer that as a choice so I'll leave it as Unknown. Thanks for being on top of things.

Woke me out of a much needed nap....recorded foreign female I could hardly understand muttering something about my computer having errors and "push 1 to speak to Microsoft".  I did nothing until the line went dead.  I had read about this scam previously on this website.

I am so grateful that there is an information source like 800notes. I volunteer at a senior center, and once in a while the folks will talk about bogus phone calls. Then I tell them about spammers, scammers, and phishers. Sometimes they have information to tell me! Still, do look in on the seniors in your household or family, to make sure that they learn not to pick up these trash phone calls.

This number just called at 7pm. It was a recording at first that my mom answered. I have been having trouble with my internet usage and the recording just so happened to say something along those lines. She pressed 1 and handed the phone to me. A foreign (maybe Indian?) man answered and told me he was from Microsoft and that somebody was illegally trying to gain access to my computer yadda yadda. I see how many people could be fooled by these people, I myself wondered for a second. I ended up telling him that this sounded very odd, and he told me to wait a moment then proceeded to try to quickly use a few computer terms. I assume he was trying to sound like he knew what he was talking about and make me worry about this "problem". I hung up..

Just got a call from 949-288-8666. The recording says that my computer is generating virus's and to press 1 to speak with a Microsoft representative. Needless to say, I did not press 1. I just hung up.Been getting tons of calls over the last two years saying my "Windows" computer is inflicted with a virus and spreading it all over the internet. I inform them that there is NO SUCH THING as a Windows computer. Window is an operating system. NOT a computer. The hang up abruptly. I guess now they have changed their ploy, claiming to be from Microsoft itself.  LoL.

Very well put and so true. We do need to advise the elderly, often. Scammers aren't going away until it's no longer putting money in their pockets and the the elderly now account for a great amount of our population. Everyone should follow your advise and that of others to include reporting them every time. Regardless of the economy they'll always be lazy, greedy humans who would scam/steal their own loved ones. I do believe we can rid ourselves of these if there's no gain for them and that means educating the public constantly, especially the elderly and young adults.
Really appreciate that you took the time to leave such a great response.

As long as 1 in 100,000 responds to these type calls, they will continue.  These are robo calls, which are illegal in most states.  It has nothing to do with the DNC list.

On a related note, does anyone else get a little uneasy that they have '666' in their number?

On To
On To "Microsoft Server Errors" Scam
2014-05-14 17:56:37

Today it was a robotic call announcing they are receiving several server errors from my computer.  It's A LIE.  These calls must be generated from India, due to their accent.  They are extremely rude and rather abusive. They attempt you to turn control of your pc over to them, once you allow this, they will NEVER release control back to you until you pay them a charge, $100.00 or more..they clearly want your credit card number.
Their scam is to find a way to make you believe they are actual Microsoft techies, when they are not, to steal money from your credit card.

DON'T DO IT!  Hang up, and add them to your selective call rejection list.  You may need to call your telephone or cell phone company to learn how to do it.

The legitimate Microsoft Company would never call you like this, not to mention the phoney Indian company is abusive and rude.

I don't know too much about ANI, but I do know if we bombard the state's attorney general with complaints, as well as our congressional reps and state senator's, might get some action. In the meantime, if anyone working for these marketer's name is Murdock..............I'M COMING TO GET YOU!

Just got the call saying my microsoft computer was showing problems, it was a recorded message, I didn't listen long since this happened to my daughter recently.  She called microsoft and found it is a scam.
If the call was a real live person I wish I would have told him I don't have a microsoft computer.

Just got the call, didn't answer.  Have encountered it several times.  I do enjoy 'playing' with them.
I played along for quite a while one time.  Made like I was doing everything they asked but then
I got a 'blue screen' with 'lots of letters and numbers' on it.  The person I was playing with transferred
me to her 'supervisor' so I played with him a while until he got mad at me for wasting his time.  Hmmm
as if he's not wasting MY time?

Funniest is that work for a giant hardware/software company.

P/C f: 1-949-288-8666 @ 3:14PM, MDT.  CID:  Trabuco Cany, CA.  Apparently; there is a town named Trabuco Cany in California.  Rang 2X, then the call was automatically terminated.  Stinkers, thieves and scammers.  Who raised these people?

Telemarketer
Been getting telemarketer calls from ASPCA (646-582-8971) for the past 3 weeks, at least 5 calls per day (they never leave a message).  Finally answered and told them to remove my number.  Lady says they will mark it as wrong number.  She then abruptly hung up.  I called the number back and it said push 1 to have your number removed so I did, it even repeated my phone number back to me to verify.

So "IMMEDIATELY", I get a telemarketer call from 949-288-8666.

So ASPCA sells your phone number to a telemarketer scam list as soon as you answer your phone which indicates a live person answers at your phone number.

Don't ever contribute to ASPCA as they will scam your phone number by selling it to unsavory telemarketer phone lists.
