We are trying to sell our car and listed it on Craigslist. Someone from the number 949-478-1054 texted us with an offer to send a check and they would send a shipping company to pick the car up. We told them no, because too many scammers use this tactic. A man actually called saying that he was a broker working for a private party. He wouldn't give his name, his company name, the person he was working for, or the name of the shipping company.

We are selling the car for $14,000. They sent a check from $17,000, that had an R.J. O'brien company name, with Harris bank as being the issuing bank and told us that we would pay the shipper direct when they came for the car. We told them when the check completely cleared (after 21 days or so) that we could contact him about the rest of the process. We went to the issuing bank today to report our suspicions, (without trying to cash the check) and they were well founded. The account the check was written out of had been closed for quite some time. Eventually upon pestering him for info, the only name the guy would ever give was "Thomas." And he told us the shipping company was called "Romola Evans" and gave a phony address in Mebane, North Carolina. No such name exists for a shipping company.

After we went to the bank, and turned in all the info, we told the guy, and he started threatening us telling us that we were stealing his money and threatened to call the FBI and the police on us and told us that we were thieves. Then in less than 3 minutes, he said that he already called the FBI on us.He kept calling and texting us over and over again. What a jerk. Don't fall for this guy. If you receive a check from him, go turn it in to the issuing bank, and hand over all the info you have on the guy. DO NOT cash the check or try to deposit it. This guy needs to go to prison.

I first received the following email from this email address: jmsmorgan71@gmail.com concerning an item I posted on craigslist.

Hi,
I'm willing to pay your asking price for it.I will pay you with
Cashier Check as it's the only way i can pay you at the moment due to
the fact that i am away for a business emergency.I will make
arrangement for the pick-up after you have received payment. If you are
fully okay with my terms kindly reply with your full name, address and
a phone number where i can reach you.so payment can be sent.I dont
mind if you take down the Ad on craigslist and consider it sold to me
as i don't want to lose the sale to other potential buyers. The check
I'm sending will be in excess so it will covers the shipping,as soon
as the check clears your bank you will have to deduct the cost for
your item and give the difference to the mover for the shipping
service . I'm asking you to do this for me because of my tight
schedule at work and I need to finalize this ASAP. Best Regards.

Thanks.

Notice no name given and simply calls the item it. A couple of days later I received a text with the same type of language from the phone number listed here. After reading all of the posts, I decided to have some fun with this guy, and asked if he planned on paying with cash... no word back yet. Oh well, guess he'll have to try somewhere else...hahahahaha

I have also been contacted about an ad I put on craigslist in Kelowna BC Canada... And had communication via text message for a while but from a diffrent number, same story, copy and pasting the heading of my ad and asking if it was still for sale... Was currently out of the country but wanted to purchase my item... Also saying  PayPal as his only means of payment, so I looked into PayPal and how it works as I'm not a PayPal user nor did I know anything about it. As I read through some of it, receiving payments through PayPal after the sale is done and the buyer has received their item and you have taken out your money for the sale, the buyer can retract their payment leaving the seller obligated to pay back PayPal the money!!! In my case it would have been a 4500.00 item they were trying to purchase!!! As soon as I read that I text the person back and said "I would not consider PayPal as a means of payment" No reply back from that number... Then I get pretty much the very same text from this number also inquiring about the very same item!!! "Is it for sale" "what's the current condition" "let me know ASAP... So this time I also googled this number and this is what I read!!! No doubt in my mind it's a scam!!! Take your item, make the payment, then retract the payment once they have picked up what you have sold them, leaving the seller on the hook for the amount.... WOW! Beware of phishing and or scams from craigslist using paypal as payment

This caller is a craigslist fraudster.  They seek to bill exorbitant sums for pickup of items purchased via craigslist.  They want home address and PayPal details.

I have a set of rims / tires listed on Craigslist and got a text from someone at this number (949-478-1054) wanting to buy the rims. The person asked if the "ITEM" not rims were still available. Then they asked the condition which is clearly shown in the pictures i posted. Then wanted full address to get a quote from transport company because he can't come to see them. They say it's going to cost $500 to ship these rims but he's ok with that price??!! Then asked if I have a Paypal account. I tell them I can ship them for WAY less than that and I will arrange the shipping and payment methods. They tell me don't be stressing and want my Paypal info.

1.) My cell number was listed and they are texting me with bad English and not referring to the rims by name calling them "item"

2.) Transport company and bank checks

3.) Wanting personal info - Name, Address, Paypal info etc...

4.) Unrealistic costs - most people who are honest try to get something as cheaply as they can

If you see any of these email addresses or the cell number below it's most definitely a SCAM and DO NOT give them any info.

Kelvin John <kelvinjohn111@gmail.com>

malcos.comp10@gmail.com

or this cell number

949-478-1054

Most likely these scambags are Nigerians with ties here in the US. They set up the sale with bogus email addresses and hacked Paypal accounts. Then when you get the money in your Paypal account and the items your selling are long gone Paypal will contact you with a claim that someones account was hacked and they are reversing the funds.

Don't fall for these scammers, better yet give them the address of the local police department ;-)
