Re: Account Number

Dear Debt Collector:

Pursuant to my rights under federal debt collection laws, I am requesting that you cease and desist communication via telephone calls with me, as well as my family and friends, in relation to this and all other alleged debts you claim I owe.

You are hereby notified that if you do not comply with this request, I will immediately file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the [your state here] Attorney General’s office. Civil and criminal claims will be pursued.

Sincerely,

Your name

Calls from debt collectors can be very annoying, to say the least. For some, the calls are so bothersome that phone numbers have to be changed or disconnected to stop debt collection calls.
When Can Debt Collectors Call

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is the Federal law that says what debt collectors can and can't do. For starters, they aren't to call you about a debt that you don't owe. When a debt collector first contacts you about a debt, you have the right to request them to verify the debt is yours. If the debt collector can't come back with proof that you owe the debt, they're not allowed to contact you anymore. Make Debt Collectors Prove You Owe

Even without sending a validation request, debt collectors have certain rules they must follow when it comes to contacting you over the phone. For example, they can't call you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. your local time. They can't call you repeatedly, and they can't call you at anytime you've previously stated is inconvenient. For specific situations timing of debt collector calls check out When Can Debt Collectors Call.
Stop Debt Collection Calls

There's no law that says you have to communicate with a debt collector by phone. If you hang up on a debt collector there is nothing they can do about it. But, if the collector continues to call you repeatedly even after you have hung up on them, they are in violation of the FDCPA.

All you have to do to stop debt collectors from calling you is tell them that you prefer to communicate with them in writing. Written communication works in your favor because it gives you a record of everything that is said. If the debt collector violate the FDCPA, you have hard evidence that could lead to a lawsuit in your favor. Keep in mind that, by law, the debt collector does not have to honor this request.

The surest way to stop debt collectors from calling you is by sending what is known as a cease and desist letter. In the letter, state that the collector should cease and desist further communication with you. Note that the cease and desist letter only applies to debt collectors, not the original creditor.
What Happens After the Cease and Desist

Once the collection agency receives your cease and desist letter they can communicate with you once more, via mail, letting you know one of three things: that further efforts to collect the debt are terminated, that certain actions may be taken by the debt collector, or that the debt collector is definitely going to take certain actions.

When you send the cease and desist letter to the debt collector, send it via certified mail with return receipt requested. This will provide proof that the letter was sent and received. If the debt collector communicates with you beyond the single instance allowed by law, this evidence will allow you to seek punitive action against the debt collector.

Well there "Bob", your unlisted - private - non published number is of no use.   These baboons use an auto-dialer and they start it on an area code and the lowest possible phone number and start dialing - going up by one number each time.   It's just like counting - going up one number at a time, only they're using 10 digits.

We're dealing with baboons here, not intelligent life.

I am amazed at the people who seem so shocked and appalled that a telemarketer could "get" their Top Secret Black Ops Special Forces Unlisted Secret Decoder Required Phone Number.

Sorry - they go low tech.  It ain't rocket science here Forrest.....

I'd love one of these baboons to open up shop here in my state.   I'd pay that MOE-RON a visit.  I'd kick in his front door and smack him straight in the crotch with the back end of a rusty claw hammer - then pull - HARD.   Then I'd take that tiny shred of has-been manhood home and place it in a tiny jar on my mantle as Victory #1.   Then start looking for #2.

After all of these non-stop harassing calls from these baboons, I might be able to pull off a "twinkie" defense by claiming that getting up to 12 of these freakin' calls a day warped my feeble little mind - and then I just lost it one day and killed one.

We could only hope.....

i answered today and they wanted to talk to my husband.  I talked to them, apparently they're a "loan modification" company who got my number from a private listing (3rd party I think).  I couldn't convince the guy that I didn't want to talk!  I'm getting a call back tomorrow morning to speak to a "senior loan adviser" to see if our mortgage rates and payments could go down.

I have rec'd numerous calls from this number. I finally answered and he asked for my wife and I said "Can I help you" and then the foreign sounding dude hung up. When I redial it, it says all circuits are busy. Some times when they call no one says anything, they just listen. I have got to figure out how to block this or send them a 100 freaking calls after 8pm.

I received several calls from 949 844 1010.  They ask for someone that does not live here, and never did--a wrong number.  Over and over.  I called the number, and, as most have said here, I get a recorded message that the number is not in service.
I called up Verizon, my telephone service provider, which is useless (as they generally are) and after pressing this, clicking that, listening to music, holding on, I got someone and explained the story.  They can do nothing and told me to call the FTC, at 800 257-3969.  After another wait, I explained the story to some other moron there who said they cannot do anything on an individual basis.  I explained the there are hundreds of complaints agains the number.  Look it up for yourself.  They sadi they can do nothing on an individual basis,  If I did not like it, contact my congressman.....a total waste of my time.  Just ridiculous.
Just a total waste of my time.

It is getting frustrated being hassled by people from this number. This time the called tried to say he was a lawyer. I pretty well recognize the voice and I will have to concede his English pronunciation is getting better. I respectively requested to be removed from his call list at which time the caller became offensive and starting using profanity. He said he would keep calling and bugging me. I hung up on him. Anyone know where I can purchase a call blocker for the phone line?

I have been receiving these calls for about a Month now. Last night they called me at 10pm! Today they called back again and I answered. I got an American who said his name was Steve. He knew me by name. Once he said where he was from the call was either dropped or he hung up. After reading the posts I see I should not bother answering again. Thanks!

Don't let these scumbags rattle you.  I get a call from this number every once in a while, however sometime ago it was quite freqent, but not so much now.  I treat my incoming calls like a I do my e-mail, if I don't recognize the e-mail address, I delete it without opeining it.  If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer it.  My philosophy is if it is that important they will leave a message, they never do.  Just like harvesting e-mail addresses, I guess cell numbers can be "creatively acquired" also.  Do youself a favor, don't waste anymore time and energy, just completely ignore it because it is not important, you will feel much better and be a lot happier.  Take care.

Got a call from this number - after saying hello several times there was finally a response but the accent was so thick I could not understand what the person was saying.  He began speaking louder, almost rudely but his terrible English made it impossible.  Finally I just hung up.  This is the 3rd call from this number but the only one I was here to answer.  I'm all for multiculturalism, but speaking English correctly and understandably should be a requirement for those making telemarketing calls or calls representing a business.
