Pain in the butt caller!!
It was a hang up call with no message so I called. She kept asking for my name> I responded in a not nice manner to "never call again"!!

Why would I worry about being "difficult" if it's the idiot collector continually calling the wrong number? Most debt collectors are swine anyway, being friendly isn't going to get you anywhere with them. They'll promise or threaten anything to get you to pay. And their job is to attempt to collect on a debt within the limits of the law, not to "push" you into payment. You must work for a debt collector.

These people started calling for my ex wife on my phone. They wouldn't tell me what they wanted or how they even got my (new) phone number. I refused to give them any of her information so they continued to call me. Finally I was asked to give her a number to call. She called and left her number on the answering machine and weeks later they were still calling me. I told them that the Internet said that they were a scam. The woman began to stutter and again asked me for her info. I told her if she was legitimate she could get the information from her voice mail. We never heard from them again.   Be weary of these calls and don't divulge any information. Ask them to tell you who you are instead, funny how they don't want to talk anymore!

They keep calling for the person who used to have my current telephone number.
I added this number to my call-block feature.

UCB called and left a message looking for my daughter-in-law's brother. He had visited our home a couple of times with my daughter-in-law, but has never lived here. I have no idea how they got our number.

I think sometimes a person they are calling has nothing to do with who lives at the number. They never leave a message.  It may be they have your number because a relative or friend has you listed on their bill as a person to call.  It may be a hospital bill and if you ever fill out your history, they ask list someone who doesn't live with you "In Case of Emergency"  Try to skip that part...always.  In an emergency and you have a spouse, your home phone number should get you...right?  Doctors and Hospital will share your info...kid you not.

Thanks for these posts. I began receiving these calls a few days ago, first with no message left and today with a message, using my name, that they had confidential information to discuss with me PRIVATELY--they stressed that part. They did not mention any other reason for the call, and the person reading the 'scripted' spiel was difficult to understand, making it impossible to determine if she was providing a name for the company. I'm not answering the calls as I finally just got rid of another pest who had been calling for months masquerading as one of my credit card issuers.

You do not need to talk to any bill collector if you cannot pay at the time. You do not need to give them an explanation as to why you cannot or what your personal or job situation is. Otherwise, you open the door to what you are going thru.
There are laws as to when they can and cannot call typically not before 8 am and not after 9 pm (anything in between is fair game)...Look into the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Go to ftc.gov  and, yes, if a rogue collection agency is violating federal laws you can file a complaint and possibly get $ from them.  Just ignore them until you are ready to pay something.  It's not easy but if you can get a phone that has blocking features use them. If you can't try using 'google voice' and get yourself a new no. Tell the collection agents your new contact no,  put the collections no  under 'spam' and your home phone won't even ring as all unwanted calls go straight to google voice.
You can also opt to tell them to stop calling you by formally requesting they do so in writing. (send via certified mail) Just keep in mind that just because the calls stop doesn't mean you are not still liable for the debt. Depends on your state but there are also laws as to how long they can come after you and bear in mind they sell old debts all the time. This may not be the only agency for this debt that you wind up hearing from. Although UCB is actually legit, so try and handle things with them before it does go to some worse bottom feeding company. AND do not let them 'get' to you. That's how they shake people for money and if you don't have it...you don't have it. They can't send you to jail or steal money from your accounts so relax, lots of people who are not deadbeats have gone throu this stuff recently.

I receive at least 4 calls a day on my cell phone from this number and they leave 8 voice messages.  It does not say who they are or what they want on the messages so am glad to see these posts.  You would think they would catch on after 10 or 15 calls.. Grrrrr is right

I stupidly answered this the first time it rang.  It was a recorded collection call for someone I've never heard of.  I'm now getting calls from this number at least daily.  Grrrr.  This happened to me once before, and it took a couple of years before they stopped calling.

Yes, at one time I also thought to be polite no matter what. If your work hours go from 40 to10 per week and less than that some weeks and don't qualify for any benefits cause you weren't fired or given pink slip you take what you can get on hours and keep looking with others and sell everything you have to make ends meet and then they call you and you explain to them and they tell you "Well it isn't that bad if you still have your wedding ring and your house so you can figure something out"!  Yep being nice goes along way. Oh and on top of that they call up 12 times a day so you stop answering it so they call your elderly parents and harrass them 3-4 times a day and they got my parents new number right after they got it and I got it a week later.
And the best while being nice is when you finally get a job full time but it's nights but they call from 8am-9pm 10-30 times and after a few days of no sleep you can't funtion and unable to work safely. Can't turn phone off during the day cause you have little ones in school and they know your home sleeping and then they tell you " Well pay us then we will leave you alone otherwise we will call every 10 minutes if that what we want then they laugh and hang up on you. Oh yea, Being nice.
Document, document everything time, call, if you answered it and who you talked to EVERYTHING. Everytime they call even if you just hang up doesn't matter. Take picture and download each picture of caller ID and written documentation. It is illegal to call family, friends, and if you tell them not to call. Document it all then give all of it to these lawyers that sue "collection terrorists"! (YES I SAID IT CAUSE THAT IS HOW THEY ACT>>THE TERRORIZE GOOD HARD WORKING PEOPLE). If enough people due this then WE can have these horrors stay within the legal laws. Not everyone that has bill collectors calling are slackers or losers. Look around at all the people that are working now three jobs and make 1/2 of what they did 5 years ago, and some that can't even find one or working for half the pay.

They called me looking for someone else. I called them back, gave them my number, and she told me who she was looking for. I told her I wasn't that person. She notated the account, and that was that. She was polite and professional with me...because I was polite and professional with her.

Keep in mind that it's a bill collector's job to push you into payment. I understand that people fall on hard times and are unable to pay their bills (I've been there myself!), but if you're kind to them when they call, 9 times out of 10, they are kind in return. Even if they are short and harsh with you, keep your voice soft and even because that goes a long way for the next call that comes through. You're not noted on your account as being "difficult".
