Consumer alert: Debt reduction companies
Beware of ?too good to be true offers?
Ottawa, January 10, 2012 ? The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) today issued a Consumer Alert on debt reduction companies. FCAC is warning Canadians: Be very cautious about companies that claim they can negotiate a deal with your creditors so that you will have to pay only part of your debt. This process is often called ?debt reduction,? ?debt settlement,? ?debt relief? or ?debt negotiation.?
Consumers who are looking for information on dealing with their debt will find tips on getting out of debt on FCAC's website at fcac.gc.ca

They call on this number and also 909-259-5581. What I am going to do is 'play along' but when they ask for personal account numbers I am going to say that I really would perfer to call them back so I know whom I am dealing with. Now if they give me a real number that gets through to them I will post it here and then the rest of you can enjoy calling them and making their life a living hell.

Just got a call from the above number on my cell phone and the message said they could consolidate my debt (which I don't have) and to stay on the line or push 3 to disconnect. I am on the do not call list but it doesn't seem to help.

This outfit has been calling me about once a week for the past couple of months, even though my number is fully registered with the Canadian CRTC telemarketers Do-Not-Call list.
Calling the number back connects to an automated DCA Subscriber Services line, which has an unsubscribe function, which I've now used.
But I have also filed a complaint with the CRTC ( https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/ ) and if you are on the Do Not Call list and they keep calling, I recommend filing a complaint - if the CRTC gets enough complaints, then hopefully they will act.

Saw this number come up on my call display, ignored it. Called back via Skype and, because my number wasn't recognized, I was told to call back on my "subscriber line". I have not subcribed to anything, so who's trying to pull my leg!

I'm om the East coast of Canada and I got a call at work (1-954-606-5580) from an automated voice message said that I could reduce or eliminate my credit card debt through the "Bank Stress Test Act". This is a scam just like all the other scams. The call originates from Florida. Any time you get an automated voice call just hang up.

If you call the number back it says it doesn't recognize your number as one of their "sales specialists" or something but it does give you an option at the end to have them remove your number from their list, we'll see what happens.
