Debt Collector
Same story with me.  Woman contacted my Husband over the weekend stating my Father-in-law was in trouble with check fraud up to $1000.00.  Luckily we contacted the business that he supposedly wrote the check for and hey told him that they had no information stating he owed anything.  I picked up the phone and contacted "Nancy Blackwell" myself.  She told me she did not work for an attorneys office, but was a "Mediator" I told her she was committing fraud and I would contact the police to report her.  She wasn't very happy about that. lol.  After we hung up I reported her to the FTC.  DO NOT pay these people any money!

I received a phone call from this number, saying it was concerning bank fraud. I didn't give any information but I found a site online that says it is a scam and what to do about it.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Yes this is a scam!  If you talk to these criminals again, do not give them any information.  If they say you owe a debt, demand they mail you validation of the debt.  I'll bet they will have an excuse not to do this, despite  them being legally required to do so.

I got exactly the same type call from a Nancy Blackwell. She would not send me any verification of the debt, threatened arrest and has been calling family and ex-family from 10 years ago.  This has to stop. The actual company I took the payday loan from informed me to report them to the FTC.gov website for harassment.

Same issues as above.  Called my cell, my work number, my sisters, my mom leaving messages that I have a warrant out for me for check fraud.  Called back and got transferred to some other guy, asked for written verification of this supposed debt.  He just kept telling me the sheriff in Texas had a sworn affidavit and I would be served with a warrant.  Again, asked for written verification.  Told them the payday loan he was talking about was paid over a year ago and this was the third aggressive collection company calling me and threatening me with arrest in the past 6 months over the same settled debt....the other two allowed me to email my settlement notice which stated that the debt was paid and those two told me they were sorry and the wouldn't contact me again.  This new one won't give me a fax or email address to send the verification of the settled debt to....just tell me there is a warrant for my arrest for check fraud and then hang up.  So I called them back and was put on hold.....called back again and was transferred to the same guy.  I told them since they wouldn't give me written verification of the debt or address or fax, I am verbally giving them a cease and desist request and if they contact me telephonically or anyone in my family they are violating the FDCA and could face penalties of $10,000 per phone call......of course they hung up.  Told my family it is all a scam where someone sold my info and if they hear from them again to tell them to contact me directly and cease and desist from contacting them.....we will see.  These people are horrible, just trying to scare people into giving them checking info!

a relative received a call from this number indicating they needed to get in contact with a certain person and they were calling from a Lawyer's office, of course I panicked when i got the message and luckily I know now to google everything and did so with the phone number and found out the call came from Texas, we have never been to Texas and then read this post which of course helped ease my mind, there are people out there that are desperate enough to go so far as to intimidate and frighten people to get their desired result. I hope no one falls for it, ignore these calls and report them

Got a massage from a Mrs. Blackman (sounded like she was reading from a script) but she said she had a case vs. my SS# the wrong name .  She gave my ss# and I have never heard from these folks prior and a case number stating I had 24 hrs. to comply or charges would be filed.   I looked up the number (972-295-9024) and I was informed this was a scam and DO NOT VERIFY ANY INFORMATION.  Call your local authorities and notify your credit bureaus for fraud.   Very scarry stuff.
