When this number called me, it came up on the Caller ID as "American Voice." They didn't even stay on the line long enough for the answering machine to finish telling them that nobody was available to take the call.

It's called spoofing.  Some people are getting legitimate calls from SS Admin.  But spammers have probably spoofed this number to make it look like the call is from SS Amin.   I just got a call, and it was legit.  It was a follow up on a letter I had received from SSA.   It didn't ask me to reply, or push any buttons.   I didn't answer the first time, but did the second, after reading all of these posts.  So, both theories are most likely correct.

Yes it IS a SCAM!  I DO NOT have any such appointment, NO such hearing, haven't spoken with S S in years.  You peeps who answer this & give info are asking for a screwing you won't soon forget! Yes...the number may be for a S S office in Texas, S S does NOT call peeps like this. That number is being hijacked...you think you're calling it & it's been routed to another location & those goons answer as SS & seek some info from you...so they can I D you....so they say. Then.....you've been had!!!!

SS Office appointment reminder. It's legit. It will NOT ask for personal info. It's a recording.

This is from the SSA. I did not answer the call (never do for unknown numbers) and they left voicemail. They were calling about the help with prescription costs form I received after signing up for SS. The number is probably similar to those "noreply" information emails you get that you can't reply to because it is an unmonitored email address used only for sending out messages. The voicemail was a recording and gave an 800 number for questions.

Umm because the SS Admin is a federal organization, not state. When I have a phone appt with them they aren't calling from my state. I also rec'd this call, and yes it was to remind me of an upcoming phone call appointment that I had with the SS Admin. It is a national SS Admin call center and they call people in every state.

So, those of you claiming it's a scam because "I ain't gots me no appointment, duh derp derp..."

Ever hear of something called 'Oops, I gave out the wrong number?'

<Facepalm.>

Nor is it a phish.  They're leaving messages, not *asking* for your SSN.  Good lawd, y'all can be so ignorant.

I didn't answer first call but answered second when they called back.  I am new to Medicare and it is a recorded message to get me to follow up on prescription coverage.  Not a scam far as I can tell.

I received a call from 972-497-1400 on my cell phone.  I did not answer it. I called it back from my home phone the next morning and it said the number was no longer in service.  I do not have an appointment with SS so this must be phisjing or a scam.  Or it could be a sales pitch, but I did not answer to find out.

I disregarded the first call from this number, but picked up for the second call, which occurred minutes later.  It was a recorded message reminding me to contact Social Security if I believe I qualify for financial assistance related to Part D Medicare.  This was legitimate, as I had indeed received a letter about this.

Apparently this is an actual outgoing # for Social Security, but it is being spoofed by scammers with various ID strings such as "American Voice". I have had a local solar power installer who said he was with the local power company call from a number that actually belonged to the local power company. When I called the number back, the lady on the other end who actually worked for the local power company said that she was getting inundated with calls from people who said that they were being misled by what they thought was an "Energy Survey" and turned out to be a sales pitch by a guy that was trying to convince people that the local power company actually did solar panel installs! I mean, come on! That would be like Chevron or BP selling electric cars!!

I do not answer the phone .... it has become the monster in the house.  I do have an appointment at Social Security tomorrow.  If the ID caller had said Social Security I would have answered.  American Voices sounds like a survey .... I do not do surveys.

Automated voice said I had a hearing in Mobile, AL. Gave details to be there an hour before the hearing time (no time stated) with an ID. The rest of the call went somewhat along these lines:
"Press 1 if you didn't recieve notice by mail, press 2 if you did recieve a notice about this hearing."
(I press 1)
"If you pressed one by mistake, press 1, if not press 2"
(after I pressed 2, automated voice said a brief goodbye and hung up)

My name was never stated, nor any identifying information about myself. I do not have any sort of hearing scheduled, to my knowledge, nor have any reason that there would be a hearing scheduled for me.

I don't think I'm a genius, but this seems like a scam.

A compromised number seems to be the most likely. It's easy for them to essentially use the same line, and it's probably an old line to a forgotten office, through this easy to abuse digital age. Everything can be found and hacked through the internet. Even our personal voicemails are digitally linked to us, cell company, and whoever else has the inclination

I am currently on disability and  I actually got approved recently. I have nothing to talk with them about, and   Any dealings I have had with Social security Disability have came through a Maryland area code, as well as in the snail mail. I missed the call, and when I called it back it said that it was a non-working number So, I look it up online. Before I became ill, I was a banker and dealt with scammers and phisers all the time.  Its hard you tell which one this is because I did not hear the recording, and there are so many different  stories on this website. Most definitely it is a scam. Social security and disability deals with everyone on a state by state case. No way will another state call you to inform you of anything, UNLESS you transferred your disability from that state to a new one and their system hasn't caught up. There are millions of people applying for SSI and Disability and so they are bound to hit one or two with these phone calls , and because of Obamacare-  well really because of the makers of the computer programs we all used to apply for Obamacare; it made it easy for hackers to get people's information.  It sounds like some people are being asked for information through this recording , and there is entirely too many people who have not applied for anything and gotten this phone call for it to be a misdial/mistake. Way more than those who actually have an appointment, and  I bet all of you have applied to Obamacare. (Not talking bad about Obamacare, just the dummies who hired the programmers who went over the top witness graphics and didn't make sure the simple things worked )  There is a reason why this computer programs kept shutting down, and I feel like it wasn't only because they "messed up " in something mysterious way. When your computer has issues, usually a virus which are created most of the time to steal information. For all those that did have appointments, I'm glad it worked out, but I am 300% sure this is not an actual SS department number. Mainly because when I called it, the recording is the same as a burner phone drug dealers use - this exchange does not exist, you have reached a non-working number. That wouldn't happen if it was connected to any office, even McDonald's. Phising is what it sounds, they fish for information. Steal what they can use to hook you and add a little bait to make it sounds plausible. People are now too smart for the prince in Saudi Arabia scheme, and the government kinda made it easy on them to access everything with that wack program. Please be safe people call SSI check your credit report make sure you keep safe because thieves are out there.

It's a scam, and all postings claiming that its not are part of the scam.  Why would anyone search out this blog if they received a phone call to confirm an appointment they have.  When my doctor's office leaves an automated message confirming an appointment I make the necessary mental note and go on with the rest of my day.  I don't google his number to see if anyone else got the same call.
