I was a member of a power company credit union in Fort Wayne 10 years ago with the exact same voice.

Received (assume scam) message:
"  Fr:1234
Card Services CU Alert: Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED. Please contact us at 978-596-0798 to REACTIVATE your CARD.   "

Interesting that my cell phone has 978 (Mass) prefix too

WTF??

I recieved the text message just like everyone else, but after reading the posts here I did some searching about where the call was coming from. Someone else posted that it was Lowell, MA, so I did a reverse phone look up and got LAT and LONG and found it on the corner of Davis St and Winter ST in Lowell. The only thing I can find on either street is a listing for Condo's... I didn't spend much time looking, but beware because it is definately a scam!

Police warn residents about "Smishing" attacks
Sentinel & Enterprise
Posted: 09/04/2009 09:01:32 AM EDT

Gardner Police are warning area residents to be on the guard against a scam aimed at stealing credit/debit card numbers, according to a press release they sent out today.

Police said text messages are being sent to cell phone holders that have the following message, "CARD SERVICES CU...ALERT: YOUR CARD HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED, Please contact us at 1-(978) 596-0798 to REACTIVATE the card."

This scam is reportedly referred to as: "Smishing Attacks," according to the release.

People who get through to the number are being asked for PIN numbers to the cards, according to the release.

"If anyone falls victim to this scam, their card will be compromised," Lt. John A. Bernard said in the release.

Read Saturday's Sentinel & Enterprise for more details.

Well I called it because I was in the middle of dinner, didn't have any cash on me, belonged to a CU, had a card that was expiring this month, etc...  The number was local, like my CU is, and it sounded automated like a regular business system does.  Asked for my card # and to pick a new PIN.  AND I STUPIDLY FELL FOR IT as I thought my card was going to be declined when it came time to pay the bill.  Well a check with my CU this morning showed that an hour and a half after I called my account was being hit in Middletown, NY at a local Mobil station's ATM for a cash withdrawl.  Everything has been cancelled and money returned, but what F*&#ing As&holes!!!

What you guys must realize is these companies are commiting a crime if you are getting these text messages and it costs you. The best things you can do to stop this is type of stuff is,

sign up for do not call list
sign up to have your credit info firewalled, this prevents cc companies from being able to sell your info and helps prevent fraud.

do not call this number, calling it will give them license to call you back for up to 30 days and sell whatever wares they are selling! This is absolutly a scam, being on the do not call list does not exempt you from text scams for whatever reason, hopefully they start a do not text list that we all can join and stop these annoying robots from pushing fake and crappy merch and services down our throats.
