update to post above:

just learned that the debt they called us about was settled last year.  What should I do?  I have plenty of time and motivation to do whatever it takes to encourage these animals to correct their practices.

Debt Collector
Sara, who talked like she had a mouth full of mashed potatoes, called looking to collect a debt that doesn't belong to me but belongs to another family member.  after we established that I was 38 years old and not the owner of the debt, she continued to harass me and egg me on until I had to hang up.  She then called my wife who politely told them the debt was not related to her either.  When my father, the actual debt owner, spoke to them, they told him that my wife called them and cursed them out, which is  a lie. When I got in touch with the person in charge, Lee Merritt, I got no help at all, and he ended the call abruptly when I tried to find out how he got my number.  After calling back I was assured that my numbers would be removed.  However, I called their new york office and learned that my number was still in their system.  When I called Lee back, he did apparently the only thing he's good at, and hung up on me.  Shady group of people, I hope noone falls for their tricks.  I have reported them to the better business bureau.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Ok these A$$holes just called my cell and then my brand new job i just started 1 month ago.  No clue how they got my work number.  They left me a stearn message at work and at my mother's home whom I have not lived with in 12 years. Hey Cindy you call me one more time and I will sue your a$$ for harassment.  I have never ever been stupid enough to get a pay day loan.  As reported to my state attorney general's office and my banking institution, someone hacked my bank account info two years ago.  Get over it already or prove it!!!

Prank Call
Received a call this morning at work. He said his name is Michael Coleman.  The number is 980-225-5565.  He is clearly uneducated and tries to intimidate by using threats.  I would not be surprised if he was actually walking around his house with nappy dreads, wearing Walmart Dickies, bedroom slippers, and drinking malt liquor.  I don't consider this to be a scam.  It's just someone's pitiful attempt to take advantage of hard working people because he is not educated enough to get a real job.  The entire setup of NRS is a group of losers put together because they can't pass a drug test to get a real job.  I thought the new improved crack fad had passed.... evidently not.  These people are pathetic.

Total scam.  Ignore 'em.   If they have a valid debt tell them to send it to you in writing and have it delivered US mail.   E-mail is not good enough.  Otherwise, don't give them any money or any information.  Invest in a call blocker.  Do not call them back!

They are basically trying to scam you and scare you into paying them something.  Don't do it.  Demand a written statement of the debt and demand that it be delivered by US mail.  They don't do this, ignore 'em.   Garnishment can only be done after a court case and issued by a judge.  No one calls to "verify" an address for service of process.

Don't let them threaten you

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

? filed under: Press Release

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

I have been getting calls that a loan from 2011 is linked to my name and information. I asked them to send me something in writing about this and they told me they can't do that. I don't recall the loan or the company it was taken through, but they tell me that I am trying to get out of paying this. Nothing about this has shown up on my credit and I get credit updates every month. Everything that is on my credit, I know what it is in reference to and what it is for.
I have fallen victim to scams like this before and I understand they are a legit company but how can I stop the calls and get them to leave me alone?

Help me please...any advice is appreciated.

I recieved a call from this number yesterday and they left a message with a case #. They called again this morning and then also called my moms cell phone number with a case number and his name. I have recieved several phone calls about calling them back and they have case numbers and in the past it has been a scam. I check my credit report frequently and I know everything that is on my credit. I know what I owe and everytime they say it's for a loan but if that were true, wouldn't it show up on my credit report?
Do I call them back, as I do not want to become the victim of a scam and send money when it's unnecessary.

Lee Merritt from this number calls me on my cell (which is now blocked) and at work constantly.  He leaves me a message saying that he needs information from me to settle this debt.  I do not have a debt with anyone.  He has bothered me on a daily basis at work.  My security at work has taken care of this for me.  Best thing to do is block the call on your cell phone and don't answer at work. Think about it, if you google the number and you see tons of people going though this, it is a scam.

These people have called my home every day for about 6 months. They never answer the phone. I can't get anything out of them. You can give them a sieze and desist order from calling you and send a copy to the Attorney General's office. They must employee idiots there. I just called them and they are now answering the phone telling me I owe someone $30.00.
I will fax them their sieze and desist and if they call I will report them to the Attorney General's office.

We just got a message from this number this morning, the woman didn't say whom she is looking for all she said is please give me your full name and social security number and we need your volunteer resolution.

We have been getting all kinds of harassing phone calls ever since we bought a new house and been assigned this strange number.  We have contacted Verizon, for two years nothing has been done.  now it is getting worse, we don't understand why she demanded our full name and social security number when we are not the person she is looking for.
