Call rec'd from 985-271-2270 Cell Phone from LA (Louisiana) at 11:00 am this morning.  Don't know anyone in Louisiana with a cell phone so let it ring.  No surprise that they didn't leave a message.

My rule of thumb:
*  Blocked #
*  Odd or ridiculous #
*  Unexpected # calling
Then I let voice mail take a message.  No message, means it obviously wasn't important!  Or more likely robo-calling where some other "lucky" recipient answered first, or it's a scammer.

Since these are scammers supposedly representing Microsoft, a good friend of mine said I could have answered "oh really, I work for Microsoft too, what division are you in?"  They claim I'd hear the caller hanging up at that point.  Maybe... but why waste me time with these kinds of crooked people.

Answer calls from suspicious/unknown callers at your own peril.  They are out to make money, your money, as in take it from you by gaining your confidence (or using your naivete against you) to enrich themselves at your expense.  Scum of the earth!

First call I picked up because I was expecting a call. Dead air on the other end. Second call let the machine pick up, no message.

I can't imagine who buys goods and/or services from people like this but there must be enough idjits out there to keep them in business. The other possibility is that these people gather lists of working phone numbers to sell to other businesses, but other people here on this forum have said that they've spoken to people at this number and it's a fix-your-computer scam which probably has to do with gathering info for identity theft. I never even want to get to that point and I don't think telling them not to call you does any good. All it does is tell the scumbags that you're a living breathing potential victim with a working phone.

The world is filled with bottom-feeders and vermin and I hate it that they can come into my life and try to mess with me.

Got another call from the same person - he is just using a different number now.  First one was 630-489-9130, and then yesterday 985-271-2270.  The reason I know it's him yesterday was he sent me a message following the call that got cut off, and when I asked him if it was him again on the new number (I didn't say the number), he said yes but that his call would not seem to go through.  These are "spoof" calls, and after doing some research there are tons of these calls being made using whatever number they can "spoof" through at the time.  I also got another one today from 313-355-5255 that I didn't answer, and I'm thinking it's probably from this guy again.  He initially contacted me through "match.com" and I went through a week of calls from him doing the romance thing until I caught on to what he was doing.  With me he has gone by 'davidhartman248@yahoo.com', but I've also seen the email address of 'daveharry231@yahoo.com' in my research which is probably him, along with other names that I saw when I looked up the initial 630 number on this web site.  I watched a documentary about these spammers and particularly in Ghana and Nigeria it is rampant - check it out.

Others can't smell the trouble as quickly as you did, being utterly ignorant of both computer hardware and how tech support works. The whole point was to let the thieves past your security measures and seize control of your machine for all kinds of theft and mischief.

For more about the fake PC tech scam, see this thread:

This call center called mobile number at least 7 times. When I would answer, no one was there most of the time. The last 2 times talked to a foreigner (probably from India), who claimed to be calling from "Windows Technical Support". I could hear other call center calls going on in the background. I asked the man 3-4 times if they were calling from Microsoft, which they answered "yes". They claimed that their servers have been receiving messages from my computer for weeks now, and they needed to walk me through fixing it. They directed me to the windows event log, where they asked me how many errors were recorded, less than 10 or more than 10. I answered more than 10. They asked me to turn on remote desktop support so that their engineer could get online for me and fix the errors. I asked how they knew it was "me", they had ready answers that it was in my windows registration information. I asked if I could record the call, and he said yes. I played along long enough to find out what their scam was, then called him out on it. They were NOT from Microsoft, did not know MY name, and were simply trying to break into my computer. I believe this probably falls under some law, maybe wire fraud, and this group should be prosecuted. Unfortunately, if they are spending money doing this, some people must be falling for it!

When they called this time, we were ready.  Talked very quietly into the phone, then hit the receiver with a blast of can air horn. They have not called back. Hope they have a good hearing plan!

Caller is hard to understand and tell me he has a report  that my computer is ready to crash and he has to fix errors right away. I ask how he knows that and says Microsoft sent him a report and wants him to fix it. I told him that Microsoft needs to send me an email first, and that he could go f_ _ k himself until they do and don't ever cold call me again !!!

You may have been subjected to something like scam  #3, as described at
http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts.html

That site also shows how other 800notes visitors have reduced the number of telephone scams and telemarketing calls they receive.  (Links to Amazon's phone blocker devices and apps, as well as government reporting sites are also provided).

Caller with a foreign accent, on caller ID says: Thibodaus, LA
Caller says he has noticed a number of errors coming thru on my computer ? And if I went to my computer he would direct me on how to correct it.  I asked him who he worked for and what the error was.  No answer as to company, but the error had to do with windows . I said I do not know anything about windows.  I asked not to call again.
