Here is how the "PayPal Scam" works:
Says they will buy the item and will pay extra to cover charges by his shipping agent.
Says he will PayPal the funds and instruct you to send the extra money via wire transfer or pre-paid card to the agent.
He then sends you a fake PayPal deposit notice email, spoofing the official PayPal notice, that says the money has been put into your account.
You, thinking PayPal has your money, go ahead with the wire/prepaid transfer to the shipping agent, who is really the scammer.
After that, you then find out there was no money transferred to PayPal and are out the money your wired.
Here is how a "Craigslist Scam" or any other "I will send you a check for more than you asked" scam works:
He pays for the item + extra funds to cover his shipping agent costs with a bank draft or cashiers check.
He sends you a check, tells you to cash it and send the extra money to his shipping agent via wire transfer or prepaid card.
You cash/deposit check and wire/prepaid the funds to the agent.
Later, the check bounces as it was counterfeit. The money you sent to the agent, who is really the scammer, is unrecoverable due to it being wire transferred/prepaid card.
You are out money and now run the risk of being arrested for passing a counterfeit check.

Aug 20, 2013. I got a text message from 989-272-3059 wanting to buy my Harley. Said he could text but not use voice at that time. He said he wanted to pay via Pay Pale and for me to open an account. The guy is slick. Be careful when you get these calls. Every time I put something of value on Craigslist the first responder is most always a SCAM.

Same person texted us for a Craigslist ad for our camper. Said she was a deaf woman and couldn't talk on the phone. No oil rig mentioned, but did want the PayPal address, and having a mover pick it up. Do not fall for the scam.

same guy contacted me re a boat motor I listed on Craigs list. Said he was a marine biologist, and wanted to buy the motor as a surprise for his dad. I am in Tn., he says he is in Michigan, and the fone number comes up as Saginaw. Wanted me to open a Pay Pal acct., and he would send a shipper to pick up the engine. I contacted Pay Pal, and they said there is no way some one could scam Pay Pal, but I don't believe that. I know that somehow this is not legit. I am pretty sure they sell boat motors in Michigan!

this individual used two possibly three different numbers trying to use paypal on craigslist but when I looked up numbers since being the first time I ever tried to do business with paypal account, found the numbers were what to appear phony numbers then received one from district of Columbia(Washington DC) I'm just wondering if someone from Washington is up to no good, trying to scam or track people all over the place. Oh by the way, the other numbers were 646-389-9667 NY and 202-670-5173 District of Columbia,I don't know about this number no scams were reported yet but they did text me.

I'm still screwing with this guy stringing along. Called the number and go figure, it is a google subscriber according to the message. I learned a lesson new to selling on net. Caught it before I lost any $$.

I'm guessing the item you are selling is large and expensive and he is buying it without ever seeing it in person.
Its the Overpayment scam. The scammer offers you your full asking price plus a large amount to pay a shipping firm he has selected. You get an email from PayPal that the money is in your account. You wire the shipping fee to the shipping company.
Then you check your PayPal account. The money isn't there. The scammer never sent it. The scammer and the shipping firm both vanish. They split the shipping fee and you never hear from them again.

mark 2013-06-01 16:07:33 Unknown
you would think there should be a way to find out what phone company issued this number and with enough complaints from us victims we could get his phone service dropped

What does it say about a someone who texts me about my craigslist add, when I put in the add not to text me and that I will not respond because those who text only are all scammers. I go on to say that anyone who texts is risking his number being put on the net as a scammer. So, he did and so I did.

Same thing happened to me. We are trying to sell our RV and he said he was buying it for a cousin and it was a surprise. He asked me to open a paypal account because that is the only way he could pay me. What a scam.
Rob 2013-03-25 18:34:17 Unknown
May I ask what he was trying to buy? This number is trying to buy something from me, also wanted me to set up a paypal account but didn't make any mention of an oil rig..
tim 2013-03-18 16:02:07 Unknown
This number was used by a "potential" buyer on Craig's List and the caller asked me to open a PayPal account. The caller said he works on an "oil rig." I'm not sure if this is a scam or legit.
