>> why have the no-call list <<

The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities and companies with preexisting business relationships, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list  is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.

I do not answer any of these calls - getting info on who they are from posts.  They are using so many #'s there seems to be no way to stop them.  If you don't answer they are less likely to pass you # on to other scammers.

when these folks asked what I saw I my screen, I told them that it said "lick my balls"

he called someone else to here me repeat it, and I did, and he asked if I was "f****ng my computer"

I said no, it just told me to tell the caller to lick my balls and hung up......he called back with a different number several times thatt night.  so, maybe not so smart, but kinda fun.

They are calling me multiple times as well. The first site that came up when I Googled the number said that they are scammers just trying to hack into your computer by claiming that they will fix it. It is so great that these sites are here to warn people.  If you know older people who get similar calls (not about computers) trying to get them to give any personal information, let them know not to talk with them.  The other day someone even offered to deliver a flat screen tv if they could confirm my address. Wow.they are getting desperate to get people's information! Warn your elderly relatives.

Prank Call
Been getting calls from this number for a couple of weeks, but had been trying to ignore them since they never left a message.  Finally answered it... scam about them being computer support and there was something wrong with my computer.  Yeah... right.  Told them they were being reported.  (Though it probably won't help)  I'm out of free blocked numbers with my phone company, or I'd definitely add this one.  Will have to look into call forwarding as mentioned above.

The DNC worked for awhile, but it was toast when the scammers took their business outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. several years ago. So, it isn't that it isn't being enforced as heavily most, of it is unreachable by U.S. law. The same scam often comes from different numbers (which may just be the appearance of that number), so it is often difficult, often impossible, even to track the source of the call, even in the U.S.

My idea is to answer "Police dept.  Fraud division, detective (what ever last name you choose) speaking.  Do you have a scam to report?".   Suspect they will block your number in a HURRY!   Or a variation"Homicide, (then like you're talking to some else).  Hey! Let's get that body covered....sorry.  Are you next if kin?"

Does ABSOLUTELY no good to report unwanted #'s, as the scammers change them daily. The DO NOT CALL list use to work back in the day,but not any more.  So whenever I see an unrecognizeable #, I answer it and then put it in front of TV.

Same scam

But my caller was a woman, still with an apparent indian accent.

Insisted my computer was at rist.  Offered to tell me my 'id number' to prove they were legit.  But she didn't break character when I mentioned I've heard of scams like this, nor did she use bad language.  She just eventually signed off saying "We just want to let you know your computer is at risk"

Sounded like a boiler room in the background.  So multiple people working on this scam

Mostly I'm interested in how they spoofed the caller ID, and if it was a international call.

Indian accented claimed to be MS tech support. Put down the phone and after two "hellos" they hanged up very promptly. Next time I'll try spouting nonsense in case they try a different number. Set this one to no-ring.

Received a call from this number and did not answer. Last week they called 4 times a day using various numbers and names on caller id. I did not answer, but each time I checked out the number over the internet and this scam plan came up. Same Indian accent caller from windows trying to take control of your computer and uses bad language when they find out you are on to them. So, beware if you are on the list. These "Windows" scammers are using several different numbers.

The caller id shows up differently on my vonage phone than when the call rolls over to my verizon cell.

Are you tired of these scammers?   Then do what I just did.  I bought a Panasonic TG6845 cordless phone with 5 handsets.  This phone will allow you to block 250 phone numbers.  You can program it to  block calls that do not show their phone number.  When a scammer calls, you can add that number to the call block list and program the phone so that it  won't ring when that number tries to call again.  Signing up for the "Do Not Call" is a waste of time.    By the way,  I do  not work for Panasonic.  I am just a happy customer.

Just received call from this number. I too didn't answer since it came up as "unknown number". As soon as the phone stopped ringing it started ringing again within the minute. This time it came up as "cellular call" with number 432-698-0002. I'm sure it's same people that figured they could get someone to pick up with a "cell number". Thanks for some of the great ideas you others have posted! I will try them.

We got a call from this number at 7:30 this morning. I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the number. I've had calls from a similar caller before, however, and didn't know any better than to give the person access to my computer. Now I don't answer unknown callers, especially when they come up as "Unknown Caller."
