Usually it involves a very large rubber check, fraudulent cashiers check or money order  that is well over the amount of the item and then they will have you send the excess to someone who is supposed to be picking up the item or other such off the wall arrangements.   You'll not only be out the whole sum, but will be in the hole from the rubber check bouncing all over the place and the fact you sent the excess off..  

The paypal scams are another one, they pay via paypal, then turn around and cancel it so you get stuck. In both cases, if its something you can send via the mail, you could be out the item as well as the money!

Sending fake checks through the mail is a crime so contact the US Postal Service Inspectors https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx

I got a text asking if item was available...they would be on vacation but there assistant would pick up the item.wanted my mailing address,name,email and phone number. what's the scam? I'm not sure what they could obtain from that info. Will someone educate?

I got the same scam text message. I had an ad posted in the Portland, OR Craigslist and scammer also offered to send me a money order for my item, and add an extra $20 for my trouble.
