You're right to be leery.  This info from Craigslist will help you understand why it's always better to deal with local, cash-in-hand buyers.

This guy says he is in Texas and wants to buy my 4 wheeler using paypal and have a shipping company pick it up. I told him cash only and he is very persistent on paypal. I smell fraud that's why I'm posting this be careful I think what happens is he transfers the money to the pay pal acc but you can't withdraw the money till the shipping company is paid and the ask you to send him a cashiers check to pay for the shipping. Once you do that he cancels that pay pal and your out the shipping cost.
