I just received a call very similar to others from the 202 area code. He sounded like an ethnic Indian from his accent. His offer was a $10,000 Pell grant from the Federal Government. I just finished a Masters degree so it didn't seem right that it was a Pell Grant. When I told him this he dropped the Pell and said that the information came from the 2010 Census and because I had good credit, paid my bills and had not filed bankruptcy in the last 6 months i was eligible for the money as long as I did not use it for anything illegal. He had my cell phone number and my home address. He did not ask for any personal information but told me I had to call a second phone number with my confirmation number. The account representative would then be able to put the $10,000 directly into my checking, savings, debit or any kind of plastic within 1 hour of confirming that I wanted the grant. Or, I could get a check but that would take from 3 - 5 days. When I told him I would take the check he choked and asked did I really want a check?
Just to be thorough. The other 202 numbers I read about they are asking for a $97 to $99 dollar transfer fee that then went to a charity organization and in many cases the account information to at least one account. The ones that paid the 'fee' found it gone.
