The Do Not Call list only works if the company works inside the US. These companies do not work inside the US. They spoof a US number and it is called from outside the US. Robo dialers are actually illegal to use. These companies will never be caught because they are outside the US. Call the FTC make a complaint. If you try to opt out of being called by these people the calls will increase and will not stop. If you do not answer they give up and will stop calling. Remember the Do Not Call list only works for companies in the US not outside of the US which is the fact here and it will not stop.

Even though you have your number on the DO NOT CALL list these people get around it because they are actually caling from outside the US. They are spoofing a number in the US. That is how they get away with it. All you can do is file a complaint with the FTC and go from there. I have numerous calls throughout the day like this. Once you answer they know it is a good number and will continue to call. The more you try to opt out the more they will call you. I have a list of 78 numbers that are being used. I have filed a complaint on every one of them and even contacted each states attornies office to file a complaint as well. Nothing can be done to stop it. Just dont answer and they will stop after a while. The DO NOT CALL list will not protect you from these calls.

Hello, this is Jonathan Tyler.   Home protection...  At which point I hung up.  Until the Government invents a way for us to block and backcharge these blivets, they have no reason to stop with these constant robocalls even though we have been on the DNC list since its inception.

Just called me... once on my land line (blocked by NoMoRobo, thank you!) followed by 14 (!!) more times in a row straight to my cell phone.  I added them to my cell phone list of numbers (with a special "do not answer" ring tone).   I sure wish the government (Federal, state (Texas!), or both would crack down on these scofflaws and start putting them in prison...!  All of my numbers are on the Federal AND Texas do-not-call lists, PLUS it is illegal to robocall to cell phones.

This caller 202-754-8752 is from the District of Columbia, Washington. I reported to the DONOTCALL.GOV website & now I'm getting harrassed by the solicitors again calling every day & the caller doesn't leave a message & my phone number is unlisted. I live in an Apt & since my Caller ID received this phone call I have received other out-of-state calls that do not leave a message every hour from a automatic dialer the same type of calls. I had to replace the batteries in the Caller ID & this is continually unwanted harrassment & must be stopped.

I had to laugh when I saw the name on the answering machine.  A couple of weeks ago, it was Medical Alert.  This time, it was American Alarm.  They've called twice today(without leaving a message).  If a get a third call, I'll put them on my blocked list.  What's even funnier is that I called them back(blocking MY number), and got a lot of B.S. about selecting one number to take my number off their list, and(the real topper), select another number to report them to the government!!  What crap!

Ms. Trebuchet1066, I completely understand your frustration but will add a little information about what these calls really are.

I, also, do not (and never have) used facebook, twitter, etc, NEVER. But these phone calls have nothing to do with a persons Internet use, what stores they shop at, etc. They really have nothing to do with anything - except - you have a phone and that phone can be reached by dialing 10 (11) digits from another phone or by a robo-caller.

A robo-caller is just an automated device that the scammers (I call any business that doesn't obey all laws a scam also) use to start dialing numbers - they enter what number to start with and what number to go to. Then it sequentially dials EVERY number in the range it has been given. That's all there is to it. If you number falls in that range, you get a call. They have no idea who you are and they don't care about the laws because they are trying to illegally get your money or your identity, not do legal business. If you answer the call then the robo-dialer attempts to do the nex5t step, which can vary depending on what they set up.

This is all done over the Internet (and that is from their end, you do not need the Internet to get the calls) and almost all information you see on the caller ID is spoofed - they make it up. They don't want anyone to know where they are because they are really just thieves anyway.

It is frustrating and it's extremely difficult to stop them. Many may be in other countries.

Some things to remember:
-NEVER answer if you don't recognize the number. If it is legit they will leave a message.
-NEVER call one of these numbers back.
-Get a phone with a high allowance for blocking numbers and use it freely.
-Use NOMOROBO.com - if it works for you anyway.
-Files complaints with the FTC if you feel energetic enough. If they do track down the scammers and charge them they use the complaints as evidence and they can be used to determine the severity of the fines or prison terms.
-Never allow anyone conducting a survey to ever come to your home. Survey calls themselves are allowed, but if they try to sell anything (alarm systems, air cleaners, etc) in any way, it is no longer a "survey" but a sales call. That makes it illegal. These calls should all be filed with the FTC as it may be easier to track them down.
-As for surveys, I never do them anyway if they call. Why would I want to tell someone where I live, what I own, when I'm home OR not. Sounds like a perfect way for someone to decide if your house is worth breaking into to me. And when you tell them when you will be there they also know when you may NOT be there...
-Never allow someone YOU did not call to have remote access to a computer (if you have one).
-If a charity calls and you want to donate money, do so through another method (I never give money to anyone who calls me).
-And never give any information to anyone on the phone

"AMERICAN ALARM":
Got a call from this number today, but no message was left on the voice mail.  The Caller ID showed the caller as "American Alarm" (which could also apply to our collective reaction on the general failure of the Do Not Call list).  If the Caller ID name is to be believed, then this particular call was most likely for the ever-popular "free security system" scam.  However, note that "Rachel from card services" has seemingly risen from the dead and is making calls again, so beware.

DON'T ALWAYS BELIEVE THE CALLER ID NUMBER:
While the area code for the call showed 202 (Washington DC), there is absolutely no guarantee that is actually where the call originated from.  Readers of these forums know that spammers/scammers often use spoofing technology to mask their real locale, so for all we know calls can come from anywhere on the planet.  Unless you know the caller, never assume the displayed Caller ID number is accurate (if one shows at all)

CELLS GET CALLS TOO:
These types of calls are not restricted to landlines.  I have received my share of scam and telemarketing calls on my cell.  I thought calling cells like this was supposed to be illegal (like sending ads to fax numbers), but apparently there is no enforcement mechanism.

BOTTOMLINE:
Do not answer the phone (cell or landline) if the number is blocked or if you don't know the caller.  Once you answer, you've identified your number as "live" which is subsequently added to a list of "live" numbers that is sold to other scammers and telemarketers,

Block that number!  I have a Panasonic phone and after the call comes in, I pull  up the number in the list and select Save.
From there, I select Call Block.  Now, when these scum buckets call again, it rings just once and is blocked.

I guess they decided to change tactics.  My call was for a Medical Alert, and they would give me $1,000 in groceries.  Uh, huh - sure they would.  I didn't answer, but they did leave the message.  As soon as hell freezes over, I'll give them a call.

"...EVERY solicitor should have to respect the DNC list!"

Yeah, and in a perfect world, everyone would adhere to "Thou shalt not kill." Or "Thou shalt not steal." Or that elected officials should not take bribes from Special Interests.

What needs to be done is to bring the full resources of the government to find and then put these people in jail with the general population.

BTW, in addition to the above, it is highly unlikely that anyone sold, traded, or shared your name and/or number. The market for that crashed years ago when auto-dialers became commonplace. Computers now just dial numbers looking for an answer. I would suggest that using an auto-dialer should be grounds for extra years on a sentence.

receive so many calls from unrecognized #'s, purchased a new phone w/a blocking feature, now when whoever it is calls, they are blocked & if/when they attempt calling #'s blocked. Unfortunately, that's the only success I've had preventing unwanted calls, so much for the "do not call" registry, its a joke!
