I will be honest, the first 202# I got sounded legit sounded like a call center they had my name address and apt number!... but then they gave me the second number. I called it to see what they would say being that I of course am Ms curious. well I was told two things... #1 call center lady said "go to western union with the confirmation number LAP423..." so then she says "we just need you to confirm with our accountant I WILL TRANSFER YOU OVER", gives me the number and says "okay call that number and make sure to keep calling back if you don't get there there are a lot of people..." well I got through on call #1 (what luck right?) so some guy named MARK say "Hello?" (RED FLAG) and then asks my name he then starts going over the process and tells me "first you need to go to money gram to make a refundable deposit, get a green dot card that has the scratch off back (PAUSE-) I asked "why do I need to give you money if its the government?" he said "Ma'am it is to verify that you are who you say you are..." (Pause-).... I dont have to money to give... so here is the deal I have had them hold the "Application" thats only "one day approval" until tomorrow 04/15/2014... I thank you all for being on here, I don't use moneygram to for anything but family an, so soon as they said that... I got curious and looked it up and HERE YOU ALL ARE CONFIRMING FOR ME THAT MY FALLING FOR THAT LOAD OF HEINOUS MALARKEY! THANK YOU ALL... I AM SORRY ABOUT THOSE WHO CHOSE NOT TO LOOK INTO IT MORE AND FELL FOR IT....

Rose...

Ever so greatful!

Good for you - glad you didn't fall for the scam!  More info on this here:

As per the Federal Grants website at http://www.grants.gov

YOU WILL NOT BE CONTACTED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO OFFER YOU A GRANT.
The government does not contact people to offer them money. If you do qualify for a government grant, the government does not request payment for it.

THERE ARE NO FEES ASSOCIATED WITH APPLYING FOR A GOVERNMENT GRANT.
Providing financial information to prove that you qualify for a government grant is typical, but you should never pay money to apply for a grant. People who run scams often claim to provide help and sometimes claim to be "federal government" officials, don't be fooled by these scams that request money from you.

ALL GOVERNMENT GRANTS INVOLVE AN APPLICATION PROCESS
If you have not submitted an application for a government grant and someone claims you have been awarded one, it's a scam. Grant money is not given over the phone for a fee. In order to qualify for a grant you must apply for the specific opportunity that you are qualified to apply for.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS ARE AWARDED FOR EXPLICIT OPPORTUNITIES
Government Grants are typically awarded to states, cities, educational institutions, nonprofits and other organizations to fund research and other projects.

GOVERNMENT GRANT APPLICATIONS AND INFORMATION IS FREE
Be cautious of offers that ask for your personal information (especially financial) when requesting a fee to access grant information. You can always access free information about government grants and other benefits at Grants.gov and Govbenefits.gov

If you get this call, please report it to:
http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/support/general-support/grant-fraud.html

I have received several calls since November of 2013. I decided to play along to play along this time.
I woman on the phone had all my info (Name, Address). She did ask me my age and if I was employed. Once all that was done she gave me a confirmation # and also a # to call to speak to an "Account Manager" at the US Treasury.
When I called the # the man on the line was talking very fast and was barely understandable. He told me that I was one of 1700 people selected to receive the Free Grant and would not have to pay it back all they ask is that I don't use the money for any illegal transactions (Drugs). He then told that in order for me to get the money I would have to pay a refundable fee of $300.
I told him that he could just deduct it from she grant money.
He got angry and said that he could not do that, that I would have to pay that fee from a separate account.
Then I started to ask him what the fee was for and again he got upset. He said that the fee would cover the cost of creating the check and wire transferring he money.
I then asked if this was really the US Treasury that was sensing the money to why didn't I receive any letters regarding this, he said that they were cutting back on mailing papers that was just get tossed anyway.
He was very insisting that I pay the $300 in order for me to get my money released.
I told that in order for me to go ahead and this that I would need to speak to his director to get confirmation. He hung up.

I got the same call from 360 200 0902. Heavy accent, free money from this government got to be a scam. After messing with him for a while I told him that I authorized him to take out what ever they needed and tell me where I could pick up the rest. That is always my response to phone or mail scammers. Give them nothing and sure as hell do not tell them you work full time and what shift. Or you may come home to a empty house. Fortunately mine is protected by people who envoke there right to bare arms.         God Bless and give Alla hell

I definitely understand. I received a call this morning stating I had been awarded a grant in the amount of $8,000. The representative's name was Eleena Smith and the number I should call is 202-657-6899. I was to call until I got a person on the line who was an Accounts Manager with the Treasury Department. My confirmation ID# is KL8373 and the security code# is 8523. She did not tell me who would be answering the phone when I called but he said his name was Anthony. He asked me to spell my first and last name. I spelled my first name and immediately asked for his supervisor's name. Of course, the phone call was suddenly dropped. I knew something was not right with this call because this was the second time I had received a call of this type this month (December 2013). I ignored the first call. When you start telling them you don't have any money or you are unemployed as well as asking for supervisor's name and number, the call gets dropped. They must be hoping to gain by falsely pretending to give something that they don't have! As you stated, let's be wise. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is a scam.

Prank Call
My wife received the phone call today. Again, they wanted her to call back to: 202-697-9659. I called it back & it took about 15 rings for this guy to answer. Probably is a "spoof" # since it took so long to answer.
It is a SCAM. We all know... If it sounds too good to be true; then it is.
They try to get you excited about receiving money so you are not thinking logically or normally.
Don't fall for it. NEVER give out any personal info over the phone especially to a stranger.....
Take Care.

I got a call yesterday from someone claiming to be with the US Treasury Department claiming I had been *randomly* selected to receive a grant. I did not let him go on and just said "No thanks, I'm not interested".

The caller was male, but spoke with such an Indian/Pakistani accent that he was VERY hard to understand.

It was an obvious scam as there is no governmental agency that will call you and offer money that you never solicited for.

The grant process, as I understand it, is a long and arduous one.

Called from this number...202-666-4401.

The *freaky* thing is that when he called he asked for me and knew my name. How do they get such info?

This morning I tried to call the above number back and got a message stating "this number is not in service".

Obvious scam.

I did a search of the telephone number and it comes back to Washington, DC.

Please do not be so ignorant as to fall for these type of scams and NEVER give out any personal/sensitive info.

If it sounds too good to be true it is.

I can't believe they keep on calling me after I continue to laugh at them.   So yesterday, I turned the tables on them.

Ring....ring......ring.....ring....

Me: Hello?
Caller: Hello Robert?

Me: Yes?
Caller: This is Punjab calling in behalf of the US government.

Me: Ok?
Caller? Robert it says here you are working full time. Is this true?
Me: Sure?

Caller: Well Robert you have been selected by the US Government as a recipient of cash. You will get free money, which you do not need to pay back as a result of your status. We just have to confirm some things.
Me: Really? I got cash coming to me??

Caller: Why yes, do you reside at.....<my address> and are you currently working full time.
Me: Yes. That is correct.

Caller: Okay Robert, I will call you back. Please answer the phone when I call. You will get cash from the US Government. Free, without having to pay it back. This is not a loan.
Me: Ummm...yeah, sure.

Punjab calls back.

Caller: OK Robert is this you?
Me: Yes it is. And I have decided on a price?

Caller: Excuse me? I am calling to give you cash from the US Government.
Me: Yes, I know. I decided how much cash I would like to receive. I want to receive $372,000. Tax free. If there are taxes, I would prefer it rounded up to $500,000 as to take care of tax obligations.

Caller: But, but, Mr. Robert, I am ready to give you cash from the US Government.
Me: Yes, I know. They have alot of money. $372,000 is what I am requiring.

Caller: But we need some information.
Me: Fine, and so do I. I need you to get the check from the US Government for $372,000 and scan it and send it to my email via .pdf file. This way I know it will be in good faith.

Caller: But Mr. Robert it does not work like this. We need to go over some information so we can send you the money.
Me: Sure, but come on, you heard about that Snowden cat, right? The US Government is struggling for their reputation. Right?
Caller: Mr. Robert, the US Government wants to give you money. You have been selected because of your good work status.
Me: Yes, I understand. How are you going to send me the money?

Caller: The US Government will wire it to your bank account.
Me: Could you send me a .pdf file electronically so I can verify it?

Caller: Sure we can, all we need is some information.
Me: Cool. You have my home address right?

Caller: Yes, it is correct, right?
Me: Yes. So here's the deal, I require $372,000 of the US Government's money. As a gesture of good faith, I am asking that you send me in cash, only 10% of this value. Then when I receive it, I will send you my information to complete the account. So, if you send me $37,200 in cash, once I will receive it, I will give you my SS number and banking info.

Caller: But the US Government has selected you to receive money.
Me: Yes, and we have established this over and over again, right Punjab?? So let me ask you a question. Do I look like a bi***?

Caller: Mr. Robert, I do not understand.
Me: Do I look like a bi***??

Caller: I do not know what you look like??
Me: Then why are you trying to **** me? An Indian who can barely speak English representing the US Government giving away money to civilians for no reason other than they are employed, do you think I have been eating retard sandwiches again??

Caller: But...
Me: I hope a cow runs over your kids and they die an awful death.

I received a call at 10am CST on 7/15/13 from a man with a heavy Indian accent who identified himself as Mathew.  He said he was calling me because I paid my bills and had no recent bankruptcies and the government had done a study in our small town of Niceville, FL and decided to give 1700 people in the study $7000.  He referred to the government as "The United States of Amer" (leaving off the last few letters in his pronunciation).  He said the government would give me this $7000 today, did I want it sent to my bank account, my credit or debit card or in cash.  I told him a check would do fine.  He said the government doesn't do checks.  I said then cash would be fine.  He then gave me a confirmation code of HR657 and told me to call his manager KELLY at 206-317-1355 and she would tell me what to do to get the cash released today.

Fifteen minutes later he called me back and asked me if I had called.  When I told him I hadn't called yet, he told me to do it right away so my money could be released.  I asked him what the rush was, and he said it wasn't just for me, it was for 1700 other people, and the money needed to all be released today.

I just got the same phone call... after ignoring an "unknown" number for days I decided that I had enough of whomever calling me. So when I answered it was "The Government, US Treasury Dept" Claiming I had been randomly selected for a grant of $7,000 (That did not have to be paid back) because I..

1-Have never filed bankruptcy
2-Have filed my taxes every year on time

I told them that I thought they were full of s*** and that it was nothing but a big joke. The man, who I could hardly understand, tried to assure me that it was no joke. I told him that if the government was giving away free money that all hell had finally frozen over. After arguing with this foreign man, I then told him ok. (I will play your little game.) He gave me three options to get my money.

1-my bank acct information (wasn't happening)
2-A card number, visa, mastercard, etc that the money could be loaded onto
3-A walmart or anywhere I could receive a money order

I told him that he could send the money via moneygram to Walmart. He proceeded to give me an Money approvel # along with the number 202-905-0445 to call and confirm. I said sure why not?? Idiots, I mean really?? I am not that damn stupid. needless to say I never even called this number back. I wish someone would actually attempt to catch these A**LES! I am reading all of these comments dating back a few years, and to no surprise NOTHING has been done to stop them, if they are still trying...

I'm so glad that I can tell when some idiot is trying to take advantage of me. I mean, I am a single mother with 2 children who recently was laid off of work after 2 1/2 years of service. $7,000 could have done me a whole lot of good with back bills and rent!!! But no. People try to take advantage of hard working good people like myself.

I received at call claiming the government awarded me $7,000.00 and to call 202-621-0436 and give them an approval code: GN491 and they will give me further instructions. Call an an Representative name Steven King. He instructed e to go to an Western Union and call him when I get there and pay $290.00 and they will wire the $7,000.00 plus the $290 back to me. But my fried so check that out. I call a cousin in South Carolina and her daughter got scammed out of $290.00 that she could not get back. I then call the IRS and they information me that they was a scam, not to give out any personal information. I did but I turn around an canceled my VISA card and got a new one issue. We must not get excited about things as suh. God tells us not to be anxious foe nothing. If the government was giving out money they would write you themselves and it will not cost you a thing. Let's be wise and walk in the spirit and these traps we will not fall in. I thank God for my sister and cousin I almost fall in.
