i received an email from craig list from james.park2020@gmail.com stating he was an oil- rigger and would send me a certified bank check for the motor I had listed on craigs list.  Best thing to always remember, don't sway from the craigs list post, respond by hitting reply and not sending an email to him directly as he asked.  Hate craigs list so there isn't an area to put the pos.

He is still out there. I received an email from him responding to an ad I posted offering my tutoring services. He claimed he had a position for me which would pay $400/week, for only 18 hours of work per month. He immediately asked for my personal information so he could pay me in advance. I am so happy that I googled this man. Do not get involved, no matter how appealing the offer may sound.

There seems to be no definitive action to achieve the results we'd like to see. There is info out there on scam-baiting. The best I've read is to spread the word even if--or especially if--you bait. While it really just slows down their process (fewer victims), you want to be sure they don't victimize famiy or friends you could have warned personally.

I was suspicious,  also, so thanks to each of you for posting. Blackburn Freddy/Barry Johnson sent me the standard email components, but among these pages (and his YEARS of scamming) there seems to be no solution. If I find any direction, I will post.

Look at these 2 messages ...... the name is the same in some of these sites and other names are used with different email addresses but being the same person or many using the same scam, they are wording them the same.

Subject: payment update

I just received the confirmation from my client that the payment has
been issued out. It will be delivered to your address this morning
according to the courier, but to my greatest surprise the check issued
out including the total money that my client is owing me instead of
the actual cost of my purchase from you which is more than your amount
for the item which is to be paid as I instructed him to do. This is a
terrible mistake and I was just informed about this, so please once
the check is delivered kindly take it to your Bank and have it
deposited. You will then deduct the cost of my purchase plus an extra
$50 to offset the cost of your run around expenses. The rest of the
fund should be sent to my shipper via western union the same day you
receive the payment so that my mover can make the trip over for the
pick at once. the money was to be split before on different names for
you and my shipper which is now coming in whole to you. I will need
your immediate response via here assuring me that i can trust you to
handle this with care and  have the remaining fund returned
appropriately. am hearing impaired and will hope that your intention
remain noble through out the duration of this transaction.
Thanks and God Bless
Craig

Thanks for having a place to help persons from getting scammed by people like this. I had just posted my items that morning and received the first message a few hours later...The items are still posted, so no, I didn't get caught in the money problem and I advised him, he would need to come with cash and no checks of any kind.

what we need to do to these known scammers is overload their servers with junk emails.  that would keep them to busy to mess with us legitimate buyers and sellers.  all the scammers always are overly polite, don't mention the item, offer to buy without even looking at the item, and use broken english.

Here's the message for a trailer that I had listed on Craigslist that I got from Mr. Barry, Barie, Barrie, B. Johnson (he doesn't keep up with his aliases very well as every message was from someone different) but it's essentially the same as the ones listed below!

Hello, Thanks for your response,

I'm ready to purchase it from you Asap,  I perfectly understand the present condition as stated in the Ad. I would prefer to view and pay cash at your door as anyone would but i cannot due to nature of my work. I have considered sending a bank check for your payment. I'm in no rush until funds have been cleared into your account or anything. I will handle the pick up when the payment has been cleared. Please consider it sold to me and I will add extra $100 for you, so you can remove the AD from CL to avoid interruption.

Kindly e-mail me back with your Name : Address: City: State: Code : Phone Number to facilitate mailing of your payment asap .The payment will get to you within 1-2 days via Priority Mail of US postal service.

Holy crap, same thing here. Even with him stating (Do you still have it is it still for sale) He never mentions in any email about what the item is.
This jerk even sent me a check for more $ and was stating I could keep an extra $50 for my inconvience. That I would just have to send the rest to the carrier.
I told him that I'm not selling him anything unles I speak to him personaly and he still sent me a check.
Ugh I'm so fustrated right now.
Thank you for posting all this, I'm so glad I googled his name.
I have printed out all of these statements and plan on bringing them to my local police station.
Thank you everyone

This is exactly what they do.  They hope you deposit the check, send them the difference and the item, and don't figure out their check is bad before they can cash the one you send.

Then you are out the entire amount and the item.

I guess people still do this since they continue to bother.  Its not limited to craigslist.  They do it on Ebay all the time too, try to get you to "take payment off of ebay."

I just had this character respond to a craigslist ad, and gave him my address to send the check. Maybe I'm dumb, but I don't get the scam... he sends me more than the item is worth in a bad check, and tries to get the item and have me give him a good check for the overage?
