Just received the same call but I did not answer because I did not recognize the number. I always look up unknown numbers on the internet and if there are many comments such as in this column I report it to the CRTC, as if that does any good. BTW. To the man who innocently stated that his daughter has a Mac. Please check for yourself, Mac users believe this so much that they leave themselves unprotected and thus actually have more infections per 100 users than non-Macs. Then they pass it on to others. I run a volunteer web site for professionals, Macs account for about 4% of all my traffic while a survey about a year ago (conducted by the industry) indicated that Macs only get about 6% of all infections. That is a higher rate than non Macs. Get a good AV and get her protected.

I have moved in temporarily to help my very ill mother and she had been receiving calls just about everyday from this number proposing to be
"Microsoft Refund Department". These men with heavy accents, assuming like the others reporting on the internet, India descent. They took my mom through the same steps as mentioned in other comments listed with having them do a remote access to her computer but she went as far as giving them her account information so that they could deposit this so called" refund". Immediately after, my mom checked her account, her account had been wiped out!!!! They continue to call and I am trying to get to the bottom of this so that other elderly or trusting innocent people are not taken advantage of! Sometimes the number on caller id shows as 20012001

Prank Call
Peter Wilson called and wanted to access my computer to get to a form for me to confirm that I was who I say I am so he could refund my money that I had paid to Microsoft on Nov 4, 2011 they were going out of the malware business with Microsoft.
I receive computer fraud calls with the mention of Microsoft nearly every month.  Usually the caller wants fix the viruses on my computer before it crashes.
I asked for his number so I could call him back and he hung up.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected-corrupted scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

I finally got a phone number of 209-890-0456 which is completely different then the number i received the call from. I decided to call the 559-386-9702 number back and received a recording saying the number was disconnected.. Definate scam!!!!!

The call i just received was from a man with a strong accent, possibly indian???? I could barely understand him.  Told me that he was from Windows calling about my Windows computer.  He said that they had received error messages that my computer was infected with serious virus. SInce I have an IT background I question him about which computer because I have 4 and they are all Windows computers. I asked him how he could see anything with my computer. He gave me all kinds os explanations and wanted me to let him remote in so he could fix it.  I asked him if he was from Microsoft and he said yes.  I asked for a call back number since his was showing up as "unknown". He gave me the website of winitsolutions.us  I told him I do IT for a living and I know this is a scam.  He hung up.

I got the same thing happened to me. A man Peter Williams with an Indian (the country) accent called.and said he was from Windows  and that my computer was infected with mal-ware. He also gave me his company website winitsoloution.us at Ohio with phone number 209-8900-456. He wanted me to type eventvwr into my windows prompt and hit run. I did and he tell me to check the application at event viewer, there is some warning message, He said my computer got very serious infected and he ask me to go www.ammyy.com to down load Remote Desktop Access software to my  computer, so he can help me to remove the virus on my computer. I don't really trust he and I had left for working. So I ask him to call me back tomorrow. but he try to push me to do it immediately and said it take only 10 minutes. I refuse because I am really have to go working. I don't know will he call me tomorrow not? Anyway I know he is bogus.

I live in Maine. Just had "James Williams" with a very hard to understand Indian accent call and tell the same story. I refused to type in "eventvwr" until he would tell me what the problem was. He got angry and annoyed with me, told me he was in Ohio with microsoft technical dept. I said I have virus protection and my computer was fine, he seemed incredulous that I was having a hard time believing him.... I hung up!

A man with an Indian (the country) accent called. Hhe said his name was John Williams and said he was from Windows and that a computer at our location was infected with mal-ware and had sent them a notice about it. He wanted me to type eventvwr into my windows prompt and hit run. I refused. He finally gave up. He said I could look him up at winitsoluton.us (which I tried but could not find it). He gave me the phone number of 209-8900-456. I later found out that my daughter received a similar call at her house (they only have Apple computers) so it must have been bogus.

This phone number called my Mother and said her computer was having errors and they could fix it.  They had her download something and connected to her computer and ran some configuration on her pc. Wanted her credit card number but she did not give it to them.   I am concerned and having her run microsoft security essentials virus scan right now.
