Don't believe any of the comments above that say this is an authentic Amex number. Do a reverse search and you will find it's a mobile phone number....These are just a***oles who can do nothing better than bother people and try to scam them. They should be shot and hung upside down to dry.

I got a call from this number at 8:06pm.   It is AMEX.  I'm having problem paying even the minimum payment due to the income loss.  They dont care! They keep asking when I can pay.  Does money grow in tree?  Frustrated with customer service!

Constant annoying calls

Almost Caught Up

We've been getting harassing phone calls consisting of nothing but annoying tones from this number, as well as other "unknown caller" numbers. The calls started right after we hit a rough patch and got behind in payments to American Express. We suspected it was AmEx, but didn't know for sure, UNTIL they slipped up and used THREE of those same phone numbers to instead deliver an automated message ASKING US TO CALL AMERICAN EXPRESS. (It's a good thing we logged those numbers!)

In our case, almost all the calls are pure harassment, consisting of loud "beeeep beeeep beeeep" tones that go on and on. When the answering machine answers the phone, the tones continue until the machine times-out and disconnects. When we answer the phone, we are also greeted by the same loud tones. These are not telephone company type tones; at least, not like any I've ever heard before.

Generally, we get about 2 to 4 (or more) of these "tone" calls per day, coming in from any of the following numbers:

212-300-5091 ...tones
212-365-4761 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
212-380-3114 ...tones
602-537-9011 ...tones
623-492-7299 ...tones
623-492-8037 ...tones
623-492-8976 ...tones
800-266-5832 ...tones
800-266-7073 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
801-945-9060 ...tones
801-945-9061 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
801-945-9065 ...tones
866-260-2386 ...tones
866-544-8416 ...tones
866-884-0976 ...tones
954-503-1806 ...tones
954-503-2843 ...tones

A few calls from these numbers were "silent"...no tones, no nothing.

A few calls of the loud tones have come in from blocked IDs (unknown numbers).

Anyway, embarrassing as circumstances are, I figure someone else might find this info helpful.

Received calls from this number as well as others that happen to pertain to American Express.  The other numbers are:
1- 1-623-492-7299  -  comes up Arizona on caller id
2.  1-212-365-4761; - comes up  American Express on caller id
3.  1--954-503 1801  - comes up Florida on caller id.

No messages were left.  Annoying and harassing.  Going to authorities to file complaint against them.  Had enough.  Beware.

This is NOT AMEX, it's a fraudulent call and I believe they try to tap into people's phone lines. DO NOT answer.

The people calling from this number are not from American Express!!! They're criminals hoping to get your card info and social security number. I don't have a credit card or any debt for that matter and I've gotten calls from these numbers, all supposedly from AmEx:
623-492-7299
866-884-0976
212-365-4761

If you gave them any info, call AmEx right away and close your account. You should call all your credit card companies and banks too. Hopefully if you do so soon enough, you'll prevent these people from opening more cards in your name or cleaning out your bank accounts.

I've gotten calls from 3 of these numbers. This is a scam! Criminals are using all these numbers and pretending to call on behalf of AmEx. Hopefully no actual American Express cardholders fall for it.

I called Amex, using the toll free number on the back of my Amex card.  They denied making the call or using the Somphon, Vee name.  It was/is, indeed, a SCAM.  I am happy I did not give them my account number.

I just missed a call from this number with caller ID Somphon, Vee.  I I returned the call, they identified themselves as American Express and requested my account number.  I told them I was not comfortable giving it out, so they suggested I call the Amer. Express number on the back of my card in order to find out the reason for the call.  I did that, and the AMERICAN EXPRESS OPERATOR SAID THEY DID NOT CALL ME.  Pardon the all caps.  I am just trying to warn people.

Funny how they called my house. I haven't had a credit card in well over 15yrs and don't plan on having one either. If they ever heard of a person having bad credit and not being able to qualify for one then they'll know why. Let's see them try to get blood from a stone... dumbasses. Bring in the FBI and what not they'll only laugh at Amex.

How do you all know the calls are from AmEx directly and not a third party? A favorite hired attack dog is General Collection Services / GC Services, a debt collection agency which likes to use the name "Operations Division" for certain alleged debtors to sound somewhat like a government office. GC will be sent to work accounts even before they reach charge-off, and may not be forthcoming about its identity.

Deceptive practice from a third party in the collection of debt violates federal and perhaps your state law. There is plenty else agencies get wrong, too. Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov.

I have been getting these calls here at  work for the last couple of weeks.  I haven't had an account with Amex for at least a decade, paid it on time, and paid it in full when it was closed.  I know I don't owe them any money, so it has to be either a scam or a mistake on their part.

Thanks for all the good information here.  We have also been perfect on payments for years.  We have had a hard time the last few months.  I called and gave them a time period within the next two months that I could have it completely caught up.  They asked me if we had a retirement account we could use to pay the bill with.  What?!  They are very pushy.  Don't let them push you around.  I agreed to one amount and got an e-mail from them later that confirmed a different amount was going to be taken out of my account.  Amer Express people were amazing until we were a day late and then they sick the bull dogs.

Don't even talk to the callers.  These are scammers pretending to be American Express.  Got a dozen calls like this from several different numbers over the last few days.  Heard a garbled recording full of static saying something about not a telemarketing call and then disconnected.  Caller ID showed SOMPHON,VEE

Shawn, thank you so much for that list. I've received numerous calls over the past few days from at least 4 of those numbers. I don't even have an Amex card! I'm glad I have an app called Mr. Number that blocks suspected spam like this - but its still annoying.

I have receiv ed no less than 5 calls in the past several days from different numbers, all turning out to be "Amex".  I have never had an american express or any other credit cards.  I had this phone number for about 8 years so its unlikly that it was used by someone else for an amex.  They dont leave messages...leads me to believe its a scam.  wish they'd lose my number

This is typical for American Express - Once you go 1 day past your next statement date and there is an amount due from the previous month, they use the nastiest , pushiest people.  Now I know better and I only answer calls from number I know. American Express uses 212, 801, 954 & 800 numbers for their collections.  One day I will burn all my Amex cards a wish them good riddance.  I hate them with a passion.
