Received a call from this number at 2:15 this afternoon. Call showed as coming from a " private" caller. Was a recording advising me of winning $999+ from something to do with my last Westjet flight. Didn't listen to the whole thing, especially after it said something about "press 1"........haven't flown on any airlines recently.........must be a scammer

same problem as months ago: calls from NY to Canada going through server In Canada and showing number of server instead of my name and my phone number on her ID. Two recent calls.  Time Warner said they had changed servers.  suspicious because could be interruption of service by hackers.  this time, no pitch to me or my party in Canada; only calls routed through suspicious servr.

Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of a call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station. For example, a Caller ID display might display a phone number different from that of the telephone from which the call was placed. The term is commonly used to describe situations in which the motivation is considered malicious by the speaker or writer.

Caller ID is spoofed through a variety of methods and different technology. The most popular ways of spoofing Caller ID are through the use of VoIP or PRI lines.

Hubby took the call from someone with heavy indian accent claiming our windows computer had problems. He conned hubby into a credit card number to correct problems and access remotely information on computer.  I walked in on conversation and took over. Man got very rude, wouldn't answer my questions, asking for his name made him mad, he didn't give phone number, said he was in California! He gave his name as GAMES PARKER.... couldn't understand anything else when asked to repeat he got madder, swore at me and hung up. currently cancelling all CC/Debit cards, reported to financial institutions, calling credit bureau's in the morning. What a mess.  I've told friends and neighbours not to take these call but forgot to tell hubby, damn!

Telemarketer
Very noisy call from Sammy, appeared to be a telemarketer, but the yelling and screaming in the back ground drowned out all other conversation.  He hung up on me when I said I didn't know him and couldn't hear him.  Hopefully wont call again.

Getting highly annoyed with this too!! Calling me saying they are from WestJet, picked out of thousands to receive 900 bla bla bla, wasn't even a person. Automated msg. Glad I didn't answer.
ANY corporation as big as WestJet, Microsoft, windows ETC, would NOT call private numbers or conduct business like that! I feel bad for the people that get sucked in.

Most of the thread comments concern the fake PC tech confidence game. Essentially some fiend in a boiler room, usually in South Asia, wants to coax you into dropping your firewall and security measures and play havoc with your system, possibly with the goal of then selling you the ''solution'' to the problem they caused. Worse yet, they might plunder your hard drives for whatever can be sold or used against you. If your credit account data are volunteered or captured, there is no end to the trouble which may follow from all their criminal friends.

The scammers count on most computer owners being ''appliance users'' who don't understand what's under the hood and being easily misled. They may claim to have a pile of complaints because your system is spewing spam, or else instruct the user to open a shell and look at perfectly innocuous system feedback and claim there is something dangerous happening. This is the PC equivalent of the crooked auto mechanic who squirts oil on your axle and wants $1600 to ''repair'' the non-damage.

The dumber ones claim to be from ''the Windows Corporation'' or the ''Microsoft legal department'' or something as implausible. Their actual knowledge of personal computers is always pitifully low, as reported many times when real PC techs are called. (Sometimes their command of English is little better.) Often the reps become hostile and curse you out if you indicate any sort of informed resistance.

Microsoft is not running any constant emergency alert system and is surely not going to run a reverse tech support call center devoted to writing each of us a trouble ticket. If a billion dollar global corporation won't monitor your every mouse gesture, *why* would you grant such invasive access to some two-bit "repair shop" you've never heard of? DO NOT follow any instructions from these goons and don't give them any satisfaction of making you upset.

800Notes has many other threads on this scam. Here's the verdict straight from Microsoft:

Strange call pretending to be from Microsoft tech support

Some relief came the first week in October 2012 as the FTC spanked whole gangs of these creeps with huge damage awards.

What's going on is that criminals who mass-dial and violate the Telemarketing Sales Rule have no plans to stop calling you no matter what you say and regardless of your DNC registrations. They need first to be sued or jailed.

Called me at ten o'clock at night, woke me up, I thought it was an emergency because it was a 'local' number.  Indian accent saying that I had problems with my Windows programme.  I'm on the 'do not call' list.  What's going on?

I call my family in BC; live in NY State. Someone has linked my phone number to the fake number above so that when I call, her phone shows the BC number instead of my number; constant clicking on line, interference with call.  Family thinks my call is going through router for above number.  Family has complained to BC phone carrier; waiting for their reply before I go to FCC.

This number called my home twice. It was a man with an accent and a bad, choppy connection. He said his name was "Justin Parker" and he was from the computer maintenance department and needed access to my computer to fix the problem. He said he worked for Windows and that he was calling from California (with 250 area code)

FYI - I dont have any computer maintenance problems, nor do I even have Windows OS. This is a scam. Block and report.

Prank Call
Don't know how or why, but I got called on my personal number at 1AM, and my name is rarely pronounced on the first try, this time it was. The man on the other end impersonated Morgan Freeman (badly) and Christopher Walken. There was no scamming, just a creepy vibe.

I just received a call from this number on my house phone.  It came up on call display as Private.  When I answered a man with a very heavy accent asked how I was and that he was calling in regard to my computer.  I told him I was fine but that I did not have a computer.  He said thank you and hung up!

Canada, BC, 250-714-0921 - A woman, calling herself MIA, business consultant. "Hi, how are ya".
a) I don't know you, I am not going to tell you how I am,
b) WHERE did you get my number, I'm not in the phonebook.
c) here is no business, never was.
d) I am spreading your number across the internet, just to give you an idea how it is when you are bothered all the time with stupid calls from strangers.
e) STOP CALLING private people, dimwits. If you want to call businesses, then do so. There are enough around, just do your homework.

Got a call from this number, heavily accent East Indian male, said he was from Microsoft, asked me to turn on my computer (it was already on) Continued to yell at me "Why is your computer sending me these error messages' YELLED at me. I told him to stop yelling and tell me what errors, he directed me to a website that "shows our partners" then wanted me to type a https line in, I said there way no way I was going to do that. He then said he was going to report me to the FBI. I said go ahead and hung up. He immediately called back with a blocked number. I hung up on him again.
