Cindy funny thing I have never done a payday loan. That's what they claim I owe. Now my ex husband's niece made fraudulent charges in my name before that's the only reason I entertained the resolution.  But it didn't sound right on any level that's why I contacted my attorney

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Good for you!

You would NOT be notified if you were really getting served.  You would also receive  written documentation of the charges, not a call, email, or fax message.  If in doubt, contact your county's  CIVIL courthouse.

If the number you looked up is a legitimate construction firm, the scammer is spoofing (faking) the number.

I too received a call from a Leslie Hughes with Financial litigation service I didnt answer because I didnt know the number.  She left a message advising me to call back immediately that I am part of an ongoing litigation investigation I was called approximately 20 mins ago.  I am sure it is a scam.  I have never had a payday loan, I pay all my bills on time and I have never been in trouble with the law or courts for anything. I just got a call from the same number 301-864-7433. I called the police and gave them the number. This is a total scam. The police officer laughed and said this goes on all the time. Bottom line, nothing is real until you are served in person with papers - that is the way it is done. Nobody but nobody does this over the phone.

If anyone knows how to get the FBI involved, please do so.

These are overseas scammers using VOIP to spoof numbers and names of legitimate companies to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. Let them know the next time they call you are aware they are running a criminal extortion scam, have NO intention of paying them anything and the calls are being monitored by the FBI.

Tried to tell me I had 2 counts against me from a payday advance loan I have never used.  I have used payday loan sites in the past, but only 2 specific ones and this was not one of them.  Still trying to figure out why their number comes up as CM Construction?

I got the exact same message. I am not under investigation for fraud or anything else. I live in Albuquerque New Mexico. I looked up the phone number. It is registered to a construction company. This is a scam and I will turning over to the Attorney Generals Office here in New Mexico. I also turned it over to the BBB. I am filing a police report in the morning. I suggest each one of you do the same thing.

I just got a call from them too, with the same b***s***..This time it was an extremely rude woman that said my number was connected with fraud and unless I call them back immediately then they were going to upload papers to my county. One problem, she never said who she was looking for so until I actually see a written complaint against me that was actually filed with the county, they can kiss my (__!__), they're not getting a dollar off of me.

If they wanted to arrest you or serve u papers they r not going to warn you that they r gonna do that I called my local police department about that and the trooper kinda laughed and said they are not real cuz if they were they would not call you and basically warn you thats giving you time to leave or skip town. I don't answer these calls and if I do I do not give them any information I tell them to mail me papers to prove that the debt or whatever they r calling about is really mine 9 times out of 10 it is not mine. People you have to be careful I got scammed out of $1500.00 a few months ago because a fast talking guy had me believing my husband owed the money for a payday loan and was going to be summoned to go to court.

I do not answer numbers I do not know. Whoever this is left a voicemail saying my # was part of an ongoing fraud investigation. When I looked up this number it belongs to a construction company out of Maryland. Needless to say this number is now blocked.
