I just received a call from publishers headquarters about winning $25,000.00, a ford explorer, a boat, etc. and was told that I was entered into this contest by my credit card companies. She was extremely polite and friendly. She knew my address and confirmed my age. She also asked household income and what I did for a living. Everytime I asked a question, she didn't give me a direct answer. I became suspicious. I told her I was not willing to pay for any magazines or newspapers. She insisted that I spend about $20 a month and that I had to pay over the phone. Of course the line was secure and that my credit card or CHECKING ACCOUNT information was completely safe and protected by federal laws. She actually tried to convince me that giving my routing and account number for my checking account was more safe than a credit card...over the phone!
When I said no, she was polite and told me I would still be a finalist in the contest and to look for the mailings I would receive. The drawing would be on 3/31/13.
MOST DEFINATELY A SCAM. DO NOT FALL FOR IT.

(While she was chatting I googled publishers headquarters and found this website and a few others. She rambled so much, I tuned her out while I searched the internet. Glad I did. I am not a fool, but I almost fell for this one.)

Received call saying she was from "Publishers Headquarters" and that my debit card had entered me into a sweepstakes. I started asking questions about location and how I could confirm they were a legitimate business and she hung up.

I live in Canada.
It was basically the same thing... telling me i can win some big amount of money and a diamond watch
she knew my FULL name
my address
my birthday
and asked me my credit card company

She told me I would be suscribed to readers digest and i said no and she said ok no problem i'll just give you a diamond watch then... and she said hold on i will transfer you to my manager. i knew it was a scam but i held on for about 5 mins and no one replied back.

Then just today the SAME lady called me again. It was obvious by her voice. accent (philipino) and name... and when i said she did this last week she denied it and i said i'm not interested in scams so she closed the phone.

VERY ANNOYED.
wasting my minutes and life....

Same as everyone else, free diamond watch and free magazines but i had to buy 3 subscriptions at $3 something a week for 2 years.  she had my address,  said i was entered by my credit card company, then asked me which one i use.  I told her one that i didn't even own.  I kept telling her that i thought it was a scam she kept reassuring me that it wasn't.  i ended the conversation with saying that she was welcome to send me all the free stuff she wanted but i wasn't going to buy anything including the subscription.  She hung up, lol.

Got call at 9:34am from woman who said she was with a sweepstakes-something like "Dare to Dream", through Publishers Clearing House.  She rattled off a list of prizes including cash, that would be awarded December 31st--said she just wanted to verify my address.  (Had it correctly) When I asked how she got my name and info, she said it was through my credit card or bankcard. I don't have credit cards, so I knew that couldn't be true, plus I always get put on lists for no solicitation--figured this was some sort of scam-type deal.  When I didn't confront her on it (just let a long silence continue), she asked how the weather was here and when I said fine, she quickly said again, that winners would be notified Dec. 31st.  Note, she did NOT mention sending magazines or anything else like I noticed had been done to other callers who have reported getting calls from 310-241-0039.

I was called by "The Publishers" (as she said) three times today. I answered on the last call, and spoke with a women name Cristina. She was very polite, but very rehearsed. She said I was in a million dollar drawing and would receive Cosmopolitan, Brides, and Vogue for free. She then said all of the major credit card companies and asked if I had on of their cards. I told her I did, then she asked which one. I knew something was off.She recited off my address and I confirmed. I was very hesitant about talking with her, but she kept going on and on. She asked me for my age and my job title, and I told her those. Then she said her supervisor would call me back in a few minutes to rate how she did and to give her a good review. Then she finally told me about the 3 magazines that I had to pay for, and was talking so fast that I could barely even understand her. She then said, "My supervisor is tapping on my shoulder right now and would like to speak with you about rating me." I said okay, and then hung up as she was apparently passing over the phone. No personal information was given besides what they already have, and what you can easily find on the internet. I will keep checking my bank statements though. What a scam.

Unfortunately I got scammed I believe. I will check my Bank Monday morning and see if everything can be blocked. I am a Writer Reporter and I have many friends that are willing to help with this. THey are large and not too friendly at times. And request that if I can find out those people, they will visit them with a Blow Torch. Let your imagination loose.

Very polite to me, I thought it was a bridal sweepstakes I had entered, so I stayed on the line.  Got transferred to the manager, who was also very polite, we chatted about my upcoming wedding, and then she offered the magazines.  Tried to get my card info, I hung up. =]

They called back, no message, so I turned the phone off.

Totally lame.

The call didn't come from the 310 number but it's exactly the same scenerio.  The call I got was from 520-722-1667 and the woman said it was publisher house.  She said I was entered to win the dreams come true sweepstakes and needed to verify my address.  She had the address right then went into the magazine pitch.  6 magazines for free for 6 months and then came the $3.95 fee for one week for each magazine and then the pitch about the diamond watch that won't turn my wrist green - thought it was funny she mentioned that.  I asked her if I was going to have to provide my credit card number and she said Oh definately not but I hung up anyway.  Glad I didn't go any further.

Same scenario, i'm a finalist in some contest. I called my bank and credit card and they have never heard of it, they have called me several times. I asked to be taken off their list, and the woman told me I can be taken off her list, but they have several locations around the country and I wouldn't be removed from all the lists. The last time they called I asked why so many people were calling me and she said I must have been entered multiple times which is good luck for me! haha.

When I told her my credit card had never heard of the contest she said I could google it. I told her I would look it up and call her back.

Same as many others - I received a call claiming to be from "Publishers Sweepstakes" in California.  She said I was a vacation finalist.  When I told her I hadn't entered any contests she told me my "bank or credit card companies" entered on my behalf.  I said that sounded like a total lie/scam.  She hung up while I was in the middle of asking her exactly what company supposedly entered me in a sweepstakes.

This exact scenario happened to me today.  The caller was VERY friendly.  She asked to confirm my address (which she had right) and then asked only 3 other questions: my age (not for my birth date, just my age), my marital status and my job title.  She had an explanation for needing this info.  I kept telling her how suspicous I was of this call and she kept assuring me it was legit. This scammer was good! When she asked my marital status and I told her I was a widow, she put me at ease by saying she was also a widow and then we talked about how hard it was, etc.  Thank God when she got to the part of offering some magazine subscription for $3.95 a month, I told her I wasn't interested in anything that was going to cost me money.  She never asked for any credit card info.  She even concluded the call by saying she would pray for me and I told her I would do the same. I said, "God bless you" and she actually said, "God loves you."  I started thinking more about this call and it just didn't sit right so I googled it and found myself here.  I am so glad I didn't give her any personal info. I knew it wasn't legit but she played the "widow card" and I let my guard down, but not enough. How dare she use God's name while trying to scam me!!

I received a similar call today from a different number.  I was told the company was publisher sweepstakes calling because i was the state winner and would be in the next drawing on april 30th. The lady her name was India was very polite and nice.  She explained that because I pay my mastercard or visa on time the cc company put me in this sweepstakes as a way of saying thank you or rewarding me.  Long story short I agreed to participate as long as I didnt have to pay anything.  She gave me her number and told me to write a few things down.  Which included the name of 2 magazines and $2.59.  She said someone would call to verify info on a secure recorded line once we concluded the call. The lady who called back was nice as well but couldnt answer my questions stating that it was a federal line and that the rep would have to call me back.  So the rep called me back to break things down again.  I was okay with things because she said everything would be mailed in 5 days I decided I would pay for the magazines monthly by money order and I decided since they received my info from the cc company, I would not give any cc number over the phone. Long story short, the lady on the federal line called me back and told me that I would have to either pay for the magazines in one lump sum per year at about $85 or so and that they could not break it up monthly.  I said I cant pay for a year I can pay monthly though.  She ended the call by saying Congratulations, have a nice day.  Im sure this was a scam but they called from 1.662.796.1847

Same exact scenario, different number. These telemarketers are tricky. By the time she got to the money part I was thinking it all sounded pretty fishy (and was happy to finally figure out what this was all about), so I asked her if I could cancel if I decided I didn't like the magazine. She said no, canceling wasn't allowed because they had paid all of the money up front. That was when I ended the call.
