I got a similar call from the number 347 559 -0378 (the caller id on my phone says STATEN ISLAND, NY)  and the message was same as lot of the people on post have mentioned. The name of the person was Franklin Benjamin. I was threatened with charges of tax evasion and it was time senstive. If I dont call back immediately, then I will be arrested.  The person did give a new call back number  888 508 0432. When I called back , there was no answer.
This is one of the many times I have had such calls. There was another call from a different number - 325 500 0533, last week too. The caller id said, SAN ANGELO, TX. I happened to call back this number and spoke to one Matthew Eastman (had an accent too). I asked what he wanted, and its the same story. He was surprised that I was not aware of this and that the local police will be notified for my arrest.
There is a very little chance that these folks are within the US and calls may be originating from a foreign country. All the people on the calls had an accent too and sounded like Indian/Middle eastern.

The question is what are they getting out of this? So far, neither of them asked me for any money in any form, nor any of my personal information (except that they already new my full name, mailing address and last 4 of SSN).
Could it be phishing where they try to get some information like the IP address of the telephone number and use it later for the wrong reason? I am still pondering over that.
I have reported this to the FTC on their website:  ftccomplaintassistant.gov and I ask everyone to report this too.I have no hope of the GOV or any agency jumping on this because its not a priority for them.
Lets hope they get tired of this game, give up and move on.

Thanks

Same call here too, guy calls and says he is a officer from the IRS and I must return he's call ASAP. I did call him back and he stated again he was a officer with IRS. I ask him why the IRS would be calling me seeing as I have been disabled for 8 years and therfor have not paid taxes in 7 years. He then ask what my medical condition was, I told him that wasn't any of his bussiness. He then informed me again he was a fedral officer and I had to answer the question, I again told him my medical history was no ones bussiness but my doctors. This pissed him off and he said he would come to my house to my home and arrest me, it just got worse from there he cused me thretened me. All this is a little worrysum because he knew my home address, email, and phone number. What can we do to get these people brought in front of a judge..

More than 20,000 taxpayers have been targeted by fake Internal Revenue Service agents in the largest phone scam the agency has ever seen, the IRS inspector general said Thursday.

Thousands of victims have lost a total of more than $1 million.

As part of the scam, fake IRS agents call taxpayers, claim they owe taxes, and demand payment using a prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. Those who refuse are threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver's license, said J. Russell George, Treasury inspector general for tax administration.

Real IRS agents usually contact people first by mail, George said. And they don't demand payment by debit card, credit card or wire transfer.

The inspector general's office started receiving complaints about the scam in August. Immigrants were the primary target early on, the IG's office said. But the scam has since become more widespread.

Tax scams often escalate during filing season, George said. People have been targeted in nearly every state.

"This is the largest scam of its kind that we have ever seen," George said in a statement. "The increasing number of people receiving these unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS is alarming."

The script is similar in many calls, leading investigators to believe they are connected. The inspector general's office is working with major phone carriers to try to track the origins of the calls, the IG's office said.

The scam has been effective in part because the fake agents mask their caller ID, making it look like the call is coming from the IRS, George said. In some cases, fake agents know the last four digits of Social Security numbers, and follow up with official-looking emails.

They request prepaid debit cards because they are harder to trace than bank cards. Prepaid debit cards are different from bank cards because they are not connected to a bank account. Instead, consumers buy the cards at stores, and use them just like a bank card, until the money runs out or they add more.

wow, so many complaints and still none had been caught. I too received the call and right away knew it was a scam. IRS never calls you at the first instance if there is any issue. They usually send out letters in mail and people call them back. I lost my patience when I started receiving calls on my phone again and blasted him on the phone and threatened him back that he would be behind bars if he doesn't hang up. but these idiots are the least bothered and continue to talk in the same heavily accented insulting tone again. It just bothers me why until now the govt is not concerned as these calls are plain annoying, and even though I know that these are just scam calls, I feel bothered that some stranger just calls my number leaves messages.

I AM SURPRISED WITH ALL THE  FEDERAL AGENCIES NEGLIGENCE. IF A SAME CALL WAS RECEIVED BY A SENATOR OR A CONGRESSMEN OR EVEN AN IRS AGENT THE MATTER WOULD HAVE RESOLVED IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE BEEN TRACKING THIS INCIDENT WITH NUMEROUS CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES ONLINE.  SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT THESE  CROOKS ARE CONTINUOUSLY SOLICIT THERE ACTIONS WITHOUT ANY FEAR OF ARREST OR CONSEQUENCES.  I ADVISE THAT WE SHOULD ALL CALL BACK ON THEIR RESPECTIVE NUMBERS AS THE PHONE NUMBERS THAT THESE CALLS ARE COMING FROM CONSTANTLY CHANGE, AND CURSE THEM OUT TO OUR FULLEST EXTENT. THREATEN THEM THAT THERE CALLS ARE BEING TRACED AND THEY ARE ALREADY UNDER INVESTIGATION.

I received the phone message from a heavy accent (Middle Easterner or from India) regarding the IRS matter. His name is Markocus (I think due to heavy accent, I cannot get the whole name). He tells me that do not disregard the message. It will lead to an allegation if I do. There is an investigation from the IRS. I'm still in school and is a dependent and never file tax in the past. I will report this number to the IRS authority. It's illegal to pretend that you are IRS employee. I did call back and no answer. It's a click sound at the other end. I know now it's a prank call until I google this number. Please report to the IRS authority if you get this number 347-559-7963.

Prank Call
I got a message on my home answering machine from this number.  The accent was very heavy (North Indian or Pakistani).  Said his name was William John.  Said that it is better to have my attorney present when calling back.  Warned me that I should not neglect this phone call or there would be some legal actions.  I called this number using my cell phone.  The first few times no one answered.  Finally I got a response from the same thick accent saying it was the Investigation Dept of IRS. As soon as I said that I was calling in regards the message on my home phone, he hung up.  Did not answer my phone calls again.

Prank Call
Just received a call from a man with a foreign accent (finished his sentences with "okay?") who said he was calling from the IRS and said my father (whose number he called) had inconsistencies with his tax return.  He told me to call Damon Marshall at 347-559-7963.  He told me Damon was a Senior Revenue Officer with the IRS and would answer all my questions regarding my dad's tax return.  I asked him how Damon could disclose anything regarding my dad's return to me without my dad's authorization.  He said that was legal as long as I was handling my dad's affairs.  WRONG answer.  I asked him which office Damon worked out of and he said New York.  WRONG answer.  I asked him why Damon did not appear in my e-mail directory that I had open with the IRS since I work for the IRS and have access to IRS employees names?  He hung up.  Hmmmmm...... Was it something I said?  Warning - the IRS will NOT discuss anyone's tax issues with you without a valid Power of Attorney.

Got a call from a man with a heavy Indian accent telling me I had to call Mr Damon Marshall immediately at the same # as listed above.  Said he was from the IRS Investigative unit.  I told him I have a great relationship with the IRS and whenever they decide I owe them more money they send me a nice letter explaining why and wherefore...I accused him of being a fake and asked if he was calling from India?  He said are you kidding? Then got threatening but did not give his name only said I needed to call Damon Marshall at the same 347 #

They are still at it!

Got phone calls from whomever this is, claiming hey were from the IRS and that the call was regarding a debt I owed to the IRS.  I have no debt and told them so and also that if I did owe the IRS anything, that agency would have sent me an official letter. Again, both my lines were used.  And this at 0730 on a Sunday morning. Stupid suckers.  I used to work for the IRS.  I will report these calls to the proper authorities.

I just got a call from this number and they kept insisting that my name is Brandon Marshall. They kept harassing me about how they are gonna come and get me. I told them to come and I'll be here waiting with the irs. A few minutes later, I *67 the number and some guy with a Spanish accent picked up. I asked what company this was and he told me that it was a residential number and not a company.

Received a message on the answering machine for my husband from "John Smith" of the "Internal Revenue Service Department of the IRS" about "extremely time sensitive" information about a "legal action decision on income tax." There was a demand not to ignore the call and to return the call to this phone number. The call reception was horrible and sounded like a combination of a man with a thick accent and a robocall. Currently calling the IRS to report and will contact the other agencies listed as well. Thank all of you for the information.

I got called from 347-559-7963.  The guy called on the thanksgiving day 2013 with an Indian/middle eastern accent and left a voice message said that he is from IRS.  I did not understand what he said next few sentences in the voice message.

The IRS office does not open on the national holiday.  If the IRS has any problem with you regarding to your tax, it will send you the U.S post office mail notification.

I also received calls from this number.  Eight calls one right after the other on Saturday morning. He claimed to be irs....what the hell.  Do they think we are idiots!!?  This happened to me a couple years ago and after turning the heat on him he then threatened me saying "I know where where you live" I said "well bring it then, I'll be waiting".  Anyway I reported this to the irs.gov and the credit bureau to set up alerts.

The man who called was obviously Indian with a think accent. He said his name was William Jones, and he said to contact Damon Marshall about an Income tax Deficiency. He gave me this number to call..  347-559-7963. I asked him where the number was located. He replied New York. I was suspicious and called the police.  They told me to Google the number. I immediately did and I found that many people were suspicious of this number and said that it actually routed to another country. You would end up paying a long distance fee! We need to Shut Down this number before innocent people lose their money!

Received a voice recording today at home answering machine, caller-id shows (347)559-7963.

The caller had a very heavy accent and sounded as if he was reading from a script. Also he was having trouble reading the sentences fluently. He repeated the phone number 347-559-7963 several times in the recording.

After trying several times I am unable to understand his name as he recorded.

Many parts of the message are unclear, but one can hear these phrases:
   "extremely time sensitive",
"my name is ?? ?? from internal revenue service department IRS",
"don't try to disregard this message",
"call as soon as possible before any legal allegations takes place" (yes, the grammatical error as quoted),
"have determined that there is deficiency in your income tax",
   "good bye and take care"

For me, this was the first contact from this number/ caller. After reading earlier entries in this thread, I assume that I will get more calls over the coming days.
