I believe that this number can be traced to India from a shady operation of scammers who are running a phishing scheme. They call numerous times throughout the day and into the evening, yet when I dial out the call is never picked up. My guess is that they are the same company which is reported to use a host of unique numbers routed via a shell organization in Nebraska, all beginning with 402-982-xxxx.

Once they get you on the line they say they represent some generic "Visa/Mastercard" company and attempt to get you to give them your credit card number so that they can "verify your eligibility for an immediate reduction in your interest rate, as low as 6%!!"

For those on the do-not-call registry who object that their calls are unwelcome and illegal they have a well-rehearsed reply saying "it is legal since we are calling from your credit card company." Since they can't tell you who that company is, this is obviously bogus.

Apparently there have been numerous complaints to the attorney general, but so far no legal action has been taken against them so PLEASE continue to report these scammers and always be on the look-out for for these calls.

When you see a call originating from those prefixes, either don't answer the call or simply hang up since any attempt at engaging them in a conversation is doomed from the start. Good luck!

We have received several calls from this number at our home phone the last few days. When I called the number back from my cell, I got a short beep and it disconnected.

I wish either ATT or Charter (phone services available in my area) had a feature that lets me block specific numbers. I could take care of this after the first time it happens!
