Consumer alert: Debt reduction companies
Beware of ?too good to be true offers?
Ottawa, January 10, 2012 ? The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) today issued a Consumer Alert on debt reduction companies. FCAC is warning Canadians: Be very cautious about companies that claim they can negotiate a deal with your creditors so that you will have to pay only part of your debt. This process is often called ?debt reduction,? ?debt settlement,? ?debt relief? or ?debt negotiation.?
Consumers who are looking for information on dealing with their debt will find tips on getting out of debt on FCAC's website at fcac.gc.ca

How bout the company just follows the do not call list already in place that they are supposed to obey? If they won't obey that I agree with the earlier commentor who said there is no reason to expect they will follow a voluntary one they have if they won't even obey the one that they can be fined for ignoring.

wcaconsent.com is a scam. Block it in your firewall.
The FTC already has a Do-Not-Call List. Any telemarketer who is not willing to obey that is obviously not going to obey a voluntary list either. This is just an attempt to gather more information on you, so they can scam you even more.

You can simiply contact your MP/MPP for assistance. They can verify who live in your household and who's not. How ? Voter lists. Almost every Canadian citizen over the age of 18 are on that list. They even got the date of birth for each individual. Unless the collection agency is looking for a person who is under 18 of ago, then you are out of luck.
Ask the name of the agency, name of the person(agent) who handle the case & the case number. Call you MP/MPP, ask him/her to contact the agency on your behalf. Trust me, most MP/MPP are willing to help. Cause you know, there isn't any free lunch out there. When it's come to election time, you know who you should give your vote to.

Re- Pissed Off Gun Owner and Tom
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a collection agency (404-891-6935) using the telemarketing bit (Worldwide Commerce Associates) as a ploy to try to obtain information about you, the owner of the phone number. That way they can know for sure if they've found their victim, er, target.
Ever since I moved close to the border last year and picked up this new land line number I've been receiving weird calls from all over the U.S. The internet has been very helpful in identifying all the scammers and sales campaigns. (Apparently TD is on a bender right now.)
Thanks to all for the added info.

... but I didn't pick up. Never do with weird numbers I don't recognize. They left no message.
THANK YOU Julia!! for starting this website to allow ordinary people to fight back against stupidity and intrusions of privacy by companies and indindividuals that have no morals and have been using the letter of the law (rather than its spirit) to annoy and pester people.

Got a call from this number (404-891-6935) today. No msg left. Caller ID showed as "Debt Solns WCA". I don't know about the "W", but I'm going to assume the full name is Debt Solutions "W" Collection Agency unless I find out otherwise. Since I've been getting calls from collector A** H***s for almost eight years for someone who doesn't live here.

Some nonsense left on my machine about getting out of debt if you have over $10,000 in unsecured debt. Weird, since we don't have any credit cards in this household and are on the do-not-call list.

To everyone,
If you got some other numbers, please post it...so for people who use Call Blocking or own a Panasonic phone can enter the number in advance. For those who don't use both, can print out a list, so next time you received a call can just check whether the number is on the list.....
I don't think the government is doing enough to help, we need to help our self and each others.

Scam number to redeem two WalMart $25 gift cards. Not sure where they got my number but I will not waste the time. You you are going to try to scam me at least make is a store that I like!!
| DOakley 2011-06-28 15:23:09 Unknown |
Caller ID just said Long Distance. Rang twice. I picked it up, said "hello" once and there was no reply so I hung up.
I assume it was a telemarketer -- hopefully it was just a misdialled number. My ring tone came up as long distance, not "unknown". This number appears to originate in Atlanta.
