This afternoon Portfolio Recovery called my house. I was home but missed the phone call. I decided to redial this number from my home phone. This is a debt recovery agency. I was wondering why a debt agency would be calling my house. Come to find out this agency is calling people with similar names. I have a very common name - first and last. However, the person that they are looking for goes by an alias. I told the lady said that I was not the person. She was polite and said that she would remove my phone number.

I recieved a call from my wife's caller ID, but when i answered it was an unkown female. She asked if my wife was there? I asked who is this? She said Holly, I asked what's this about, she sid it was personal for my wife. She then asked if I was her husband? I said yes, so she asked if we had the same last name? I hung up. The phone number shows up as 404-921-2537 with a fax icon?? I had to google this problem and learned about Spoofing. If it's not illegal it should be for many reasons that I can think off. I feel my wife and I have had our privacy highjacked!!

Ive been thru a bankruptcy and your lawyer should step in. I called mine, kept a record of all the calls, gave him all the info, and 3 months later I got a check for 1000.00. it would have been more but he kept 500. one third.  It does work, but, keep in mind, most debt collection agencies have more than one name. I had to prove they were all one and the same. As long as you have the phone numbers, its pretty easy. You have to contact all the service providers and find out which one they use. Comcast,Verizon, RCN, etc. etc. etc.  No lie, it does work.  It takes a little effort on your part, but that surprise check comes in handy especially after filing for bankruptcy.

Prank Call
I love Portfolio Recovery AssN. They never forget me. It has been more than three years now, since they started calling. I have NEVER spoken to them in all that time. After I complained to the state Attorney General's consumer protection office, they issued a fraudulant 1099-C. So naturally, I had to file complaints with the Post Office, for mail fraud, the IRS, for the fake 1099 claim  -- they had nearly $5000 on it, for some totally unverified "debt" that they admitted was nothing more than a line on a printout, no WAY to verify even its existence, much less that it belonged to me, or anybody else for that matter....Then I complained to the FTC. The atty genl forced them to reply to my correspondance, which they had ignored, and they even failed to return the post card when I wrote by certified mail, "return receipt requested." (The USPS data base proved they did receive the letter.) Anyway, the lawyer, Pearson, who PRA had hired specifically to deal with all the inquiries coming in from state attorneys general all over the USA, admitted the thing was not verifiable, AND he asserted that Portfolio AssN. had issued the 1099-C because they had "decided" to "cease collection efforts" on this "debt." That was years ago. The idiots have been calling ever since. This call today  is #205 since they decided to cease collection efforts. But then again, bottom-feeding pond scum are not known for being bright! Nor are vermin known for being honest. Go figure!

Dear Lisa,
if you are living below the poverty line, I would consider waiting til the debt expires instead of suffering further...there is also something called a Marshall's Exemption...when they serve you a lein, you can have a court hearing showing that you can't pay because you are below the poverty line...consult an attorney in your area...check out the NACA online..for an attorney that knows how to help at no cost....

PORTFOLIO RECOVERY ASSOCIATES (PRA)
140 Corporate Blvd.
Norfolk, VA 23502
Talk about feeling the heat, PRA reportedly is running as low as most fuel tanks in their inability to procure cheap, worhless debts to collect. CEO Kevin Stevenson is rumored to be having problems finding enough paper to keep his crews running. PRA's problems appear to stem from the fact that they have hunted down every debt made in America, some reportedly dating back to the civil war. It may sound ridiculous but Kevin may be considering going after over-due library books, returning cans for deposits, even looking at red light cameras in China and South America, just as long as they generate income. This of course has set off a mad frenzy of debt collectors, desperate to make their goals for fear of being fired. (would anyone hire a former PRA collector?) Consumers will feel the brunt of their hysteria when the threat level goes to DEFCOM 4 at PRA for those unlucky to meet their goals. Word on the street is that debt collectors have seen their better days and when your entire business looks and feels like PRA, that house of cards won't take much to beging sliding into obscurity. You can help by NOT sending them your hard earned money, after all, they did nothing to earn it but lie, cheat and generate phony documents. Need help? assistance@consumerjustice.com

PRA is KNOWN for being in the TOP 5 illegal collectors - they violate FDPCA as

http://www.collectorsexposed.com/collectors/Index.php/topic/2547-worst-agencies-brachfeld-northstar-pra-rpm-national-credit-works/

they will FILE 1099-C tax forms ILLEGALLY with the IRS.  they did not loan you any money - but the 1099-C implies that they did..

They are doing skip tracing. Simply tell them you do not know this person and ask them to stop calling. If they refuse, you can sue them for harassing a non-debtor.

Call blocking this company is useless.  Calls comes in everyday. Each day I have to block a different number as you can only block 6 numbers. Deleting one of them hoping they wont call again from the nmbwer. I have submitted all debts in my bankruptcy and still they are calling for a debt that has been released from me by a judge in court.  I wish the Federal Government would step in and pull the plug on these parasites.

Hello everyone, I'm going through the same thing.

I have an easy solution for all of you that will help you not only stop your calls but also make you money in the process.

Take 10 minutes and go to your local court house and spend $7 to $15 depending on where you live and file a local small claims law suit against this company. It's really easy to do and the people at the court house will help you fill out the tiny form. Since they are incorporated legally they must show up with an attorney to represent them. If they don't show up, and chances are they will not- you will get a default judgement. Now you can go after them if they don't pay you in a timely fashion.

Check the FDCPA (Fair Dept Collections Practices Act) for damages you can claim. And of course, take with you to court all your evidence. You still have to prove your case to the judge and show damages according to FDCPA and anything else you have, regardless if they show up or not. It's a slam-dunk if they don't show up and still pretty easy to do even if they do have an attorney present.

Let's put these unruly debt collectors out of business, one small claims complaint at a time!

Good luck everyone!

Bottom feeding company's like this will rarely stop calling, by nature because they are liars and thieves they think everyone else is.  Google voice offers a free service. They will give you a telephone number in the area code of your choosing. Google voice offers amazing call blocking features (no limit on how many numbers), integrated voice mail, contact list. On top of this you can register your cell phone number with them and it will automaticly ring your phone. There are a lot of other features for Gvoice including "spam" number detection, that when turned on will automaticly block many telemarketers.
With the blocking feature instead of hearing a ring the caller hears 3 tones and the message that this number is no longer in service. With many predictive dialers(telemarketers and debt collectors use these) when the 3 tones are heard they remove that number from the dialing list.
I did the following
1. Changed my cell phone number (if do not have a landline)
2. Got a google voice number( google voice will forward all calls to your cell and act as your voicemail).
3. I never give out my new cell number only my gvoice number.
4. Block any annoying calls.
The end result is that after a couple of weeks my cell hardly every rings unless it's someone I know.
