Increasing number of calls from this phony (invalid) number. I answered once and a foreigner asked if it was me. I said hello, yes it is, and then the weirdo hung up on me.

I received a call today and they said that they were bank of america. from a 406-548 number. They said my debit card was blocked from use and that i need to talk to them. I hung up the phone. I was a robo machine talking.

We have the 406 prefix. They called once this week when we were not home. Just called again, after a few Hello's from me there was lots of static and they asked to speak to my husband. He did not sound very professional, and I just hung up on him right away..

For tha past 2 days I have been receiving calls from 3 to four digit numbers but unfortunately missed every one of them but there was no message left on my cell phone. The first number that called was 271-6, the 2nd was 624, the third was 252-8, and the fourth showed up as 402. It's driving me crazy wondering who the hell could be calling me with a 3 or 4 digit number since I've never seen this before. Does anyone have any idea who could this be and have these numbers evershowed up on your caller id???

Anyone getting calls with no one on the other end from a 3 digit phone number that shows up on my caller id as 406? I have sprint cell service

I have received a dozen calls with "406" on the caller id in the past 24 hours. I actually answered a few times to get only silence BUT one time a guy claiming to be from a "sweepstakes" was on the line - there was a ton of background noise - he asked if I carried a Visa or MasterCard, when I said no he hung up. Yet the calls continue...I am in the 941 area code.

This is a spoofed (faked) telephone number. Moreover, it is in an INVALID format. Consequently, you should expect (if you answer the call) to be speaking with a scam artist or listening to a robo call (pre-recorded message), which incidentally is illegal.
North American phone numbers are in the format: NXX-NXX-XXXX where N is any digit from 2-9 and X can be any digit from 0-9. Check out the rules at the North American Numbering Plan Administration website: http://www.nanpa.com/
If you receive a call from this faked out number, or any other number that does not conform to the NANPA rules, I suggest you report the call immediately to the "Do Not Call" list regulator for your country. You can also initiate a call trace by dialing *57 (or #57 in some areas; there might be an altogether code in other areas - check the front of your phone directory). Anyway, the phone company will trace the call and be able to produce the records (for the police) if you decide to take legal action; they will not release the records to you directly.

Probably "spoofed" the number.

According to the following news article, this number has been used for political calls coming from Romania: http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2008/10/23/news/local/18-romania.txt

I had 12 calls in 24 hours, w/no messages left until the very last one. That message was a recording asking for my vote in the upcoming election. I will NOT vote for anyone who harasses people this way. The calls were as late as 9:00 pm, then started again at 8:00 am. This is ridiculous

Caller ID shows at least 10 calls from 406-000-0000 in last 24 hours. No one ever answers when I answer the phone - just dead silence. I'll let that one ring from now on. What I don't understand is why someone is even doing this: what's the point? they don't answer or talk - why call? Really stupid.

Received a call and no one was on the other end. I hung up and dialed *69, the recording said it was from 406-000-0000.

It would be nice to spike them back, but these guys are invisible. The FTC told me that there is a box that these scammers use to put up any phone number they like. It's illegal, but just as illegal as calling folks on the DNC list. I don't get why you would do it though. The success rate of scamming someone has got to be a hair north of 0, especially when calling people with Caller ID.

406-000-0000. 26 calls in the last two days. It is a computer generated call, no "live" person on the other end. No message left on answering machine. This many calls is consumer harassment, a crime. Reported to Do Not Call Registry, BBB, and MT State Attorney. This number has quite a history. Number reports being disconnected, so apparently, the "caller" is "ghosting" their number. Unable to block the number due to the "000-0000" use. Too bad we can't "spike back" such an abuser. Good luck to all.

Two calls this week to my cell phone. I missed both calls. No messages were left and when I attempted to return the call I also got a message from Verizon saying the number was disconnected.

I've had 19 phone calls in two days. Dead silence on other end. I am in 406 area code. When I call back, Verizon gets on the phone with a message saying this is a Verizon number which has been disconnected or no longer in service. Calls are made to my landline. Verizon isn't able to block or help and referred me to land line carrier. Since it is an 11 digit number, they were unable to block it.
