two times called me tonight. each time they ask for the homeowner, when I say that's me, they immediately hang up. Why?

Dish Network called my cell phone. pre-recorded message that routes you to an operator if you press 1.

Someone called me from this number, too. I tried to call back immediately and it said "the number you have dialed is not in service at this time". The number is registered to:

Don't call your wireless company about it. They can't do anything about it unfortunately. Call your local telcom (land line) company. They have a nuisance phone caller division we can all report this to.
This is one of 6 numbers that I'm going after but the more of you that report this the better chance we all have of stopping this.

Yes, I received the same call. Advertising a satelite tv service sign up. Somethings phishy. If you go to http://www.whitepages.com/reverse_phone and do a reverse look up on that number you can find the service provide to that lan line.
