The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Called by this number and initially told I had bounced a check....then threatened with a lawsuit for a supposed debt from 2004!  When i replied that I had no idea what they were talking about, they told me I had been recorded by the federal court and that she was an officer of the court!  Put me on hold several times, said she was pulling up a national database...a huge scam!  Told me that if I didn't pay they would sue me and my ex wife within 48 hours.

I've gotten 2 calls from this number 410-402-1073. both threatening me with my arrest and a warrant will be served at my address. What really scares me is that these people have all my personal info, address and ss#.
The attorney is John Spencer, District court arbitration. This so called Fraud Investigator leaves a voice message "you do not hang up on me so we are serving a warrant for your arrest"  SO am I being arrested for supposedly owing money or hanging up on her???  Oh yes that vm is saved.
Really why can't we all file a class action law suit for harrasment and threats! This is also almost 10yrs old they don't even know what the reason is for the dollar amount and also called it a PAY DAY Loan what the hell is that?

Got a call from a person named Sherry. She said it was from a payday loan in 2008 for BMG and it was never paid back. This is BULL CRAP as I have gotten a payday loan locally and they had no reports of  any defaults.

When they call on 5-23-13 at about 12:30 noon and said that if they didn't get payment that someone will come up to where I work with a subpoena..... I asked Sherry to email me a "Debt Validation" and so far have got NOTHING.... I asked Sherry if she was an officer of the Court and she had a melt down... But the answer was NO... she is not.

I don't even know this company so I know I didn't do Payday loan with them.  They have bought my info from someone on the net and are trying to extort money by scaring people.

I also found out the "BMG" may stand for "Bahamas Marketing Group" and they are a scam!!!!  But just in case here is their info:   BMG, 20F Street, 7th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20001   (410) 402-1073.

Don't know if this address is real but I'm going to investigate it!!!!!  Good Luck to ALL.

Received the same message on a debt that's over 7 years old. In my state, that's beyond statute of limitations. Lady didn't seem to get it, then hung up on me. Personally I think it's a bogus call.
