I got a call today and when I asked this man (obviously an East Indian) what it was about, he said I could talk to Robert Matthews and started to give me his number.  I said, "I hope he speaks better English than you" and he said, F*** you and hung up.  I worked for several sheriffs over the past 15 years and this one is such an ongoing freak scam.

They left a message in very broken English, which is somewhat surprising as most scammers don't leave messages. It was about a potential lawsuit and how I needed to call them back immediately. Except they didn't know my name, or provide any other information that would make it seem legitimate.

Candidly I'm surprised that no one else on WhoCallsMe has received a call from this number as I found a few others sites online where others have marked it as spam. For instance:

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-469-567-9492

It didn't seem legitimate so I've blocked the call.

We received a call from this phone number with the same broken English message. Honestly, based on the thick accent?? That was the first giveaway that it was a scam. Plus I have never heard of,  "department of legal affairs." They were not happy with leaving a message and continued to call repeatedly. After looking on the Internet at all of these posts, I answered the phone. I told them that this was a scam and to stop calling. They continued to call, and we will be contacting the IRS and the FTC to file complaints. What is extremely frightening about all of this is that I don't owe any back taxes, but if I did, I might be more scared than I was.

Prank Call
I received calls from this number several times with a scripted message. Said they were from the dept of legal affairs for the Department of the Treasury. When I told him my tax issues had been resolved and to stop calling me he yold me to "go f*ck myself." Clearly not a government employee. Scam.

Says he is calling from Dept of Treasury
1919 Smith Room 2270

Said I should call Robert Matthews, investigation officer, at the same number or I would be arrested in the next 3 hours.

I called the number back and the same voice with a deep Indian accent said they would have to call me back later and that the mailbox was full.

He called a few days ago and left a message saying I would be arrested in two hours if I didn't call back.  However, no one came to arrest me.

It is my opinion that clearly this is a scam of some sort.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I got a call from 469-567-9492 they told me they were the part of the US treasury IRS Legal Department and were going to arrest me in 3 hours if I did not pay them.. They wanted me to go to CVS or Walgreens and get a (IRS TAX voucher) i.e or know as a green dot money card. I had a great time asking them questions and playing with this. They hung up on me a few times and I called back over and over until they answered I told them I got a card and then gave them a number of a green dot card I found a picture of online... Then I called them back to see when the guy was coming to arrest me told them I hadn't had any visitors for a long time and was waiting with cookies and milk or him/her.. Sorry I had a lot of time on my hand the other day!! LOL These people are a joke.. If you can call them and get their VM you will get a big laugh it say US treasury IRS Legal Department and then the VM is full..

I received a voice mail message on May 16th at 10:55am from a person who called himself Alex Belton.  He had an extremely thick Indian accent.  He stated that he was from the Department of Legal Affairs of the U.S. Treasury Department.  He stated that the installment agreement I currently have with the IRS had been terminated and that no further agreements will be honored.  The installment amounts I was paying were not sufficient to take care of the outstanding debt.  He also stated that enforcement action has been started against my name and that a Treasury Agent will be appearing at my door within the next 10-15 minutes to arrest me and detain me for the next 6 months.  Every time I spoke of having my attorney call them, I got disconnected.  This happened twice.  I'm inclined to believe that this is a scare tactic to scam me out of funds.  Not happening.

THIS IS A SCAM. Alex Pelton (aka, man with thick Indian? accent) left the exact same message, word for word, on our company phone the last 3 mornings around the same time. He says he is from the Department of Legal Affairs and there are imposement actions against me. It is clearly a poorly written script with bad grammar and broken English. We called back yesterday and they tried to bully me into paying, saying someone would come to arrest me within the next 2 hours if I didn't pay now. They have tax ID numbers, but are fraudulent.

I just got that guy, from the US Treasury Department, but then he transferred to me, amazing they had the same accent, they had me so upset I could have bit nails in half. My co-workers hear me screaming at them 2 hallways over, and from the inside of a closet. They were hard to understand, when I hung up even, they kept calling back, they said they have been mailing certified letters to me, and would be arrested if I didn't resolve this matter. The last call, I'm still not answering,  after 4 calls later, they did leave a message, my co-workers and I never did figure out completely what they were saying. These guys were harassing, and if they thought they were going to get something from me they were just full of it. If I have an issue with IRS then I will deal with them, not some "guy" on a phone threatening me.

Called on my cell phone saying a Federal warrant for my arrest had been issued and an officer would be arresting me in the next 3 hours.  Called a friend of mine who works for the Secret Service who informed me they go by the title "Special Agent", not "Officer" and they were aware of this scam.  So when I called back to speak with the "officer", I asked how much I owed and was told $5,800 for tax year 2009, which I knew I did not owe.  I baited them and asked how I could resolve this today over the phone, and by golly if I just gave them my bank routing number and account number they could debit the amount and voila it disappears!  Of course the IRS NEVER corresponds by phone in this kind of matter, it is always by certified mail.  I reported it to the FTC on their website, if you report it, put IRS financial scam in the header.  The guy who called me had an accent like someone from India.

Yes, I got  a call from these slimy scamming scumbags from  Mr Sargent and his so called law office, he was calling me several times from Dallas number and private name from same number. What I suggest is when they call and harass you then call them back 50-100 times a day, tie up there answering service and phone line, with enough people doing it and tie up their lines they won't get much time to call anyone.

Received a call today with a similar message.  The caller was definitely foreign, so I hard time understanding him.  I believe he said there was a lawsuit pending and that he hoped I would call him back and settle it.  He will be waiting for a long time.

I also suggest being careful calling back a call like this as they can sometimes be linked to a foreign telephone company and you will end up with a huge bill charged to your regular bill. Not saying that this one is.
