I don't have enough time to waste their time, and I don't want to have to look at my phone every time it rings to see if it is a number I don't recognize. We should not have to avoid answering our phones and always listen to voicemail instead. Isn't there some way to stop these pigs who are ruining cell phone connectivity.

I seem very interested at first. then after they start their spill tell them to F##k themselves, boy does that pi## them off. and they start their trash talk and I just call them are a bottom feeder and to get a better job. boy does that make them mad. bet they go home a kick the dog.

I understand how you feel.  You have to look on it as a game.  Telephone Chicken - whoever hangs up first loses.  It's really funny if you get them to get upset at you, and they start cursing.

These "companies" calling are not telemarketers.  They are scammers.  They want your credit card number, not a sale.  Plain and simple.

When you actually go ahead and interact with their menu, i.e. pressing X to be put on the do not call list, they know they have a real person with a real phone number.  At that point you are screwed unless you change phone numbers.  You will continue to receive calls from various area codes from robotic dialers.  

Best advice:  Don't answer calls from strange numbers!  If it is important they will leave a voicemail.  If you do pick up, let the call time out and don't press any buttons!

I think Bob has the right idea to keep them on the line and waste their time & money, but I admit I don't habe the patience to do that.

Yep, wacko calls. Don't answer.

Typical alarm scam phone call.  This time, there are multiple submenus where you have to press different numbers to continue on, all including a "uselessly request to be put on DNC".  Then is says someone will call back and hangs up.

When they do, I will talk to them at length about their product, what it does, how big my dog is and why motion sensors wont work, and ask them as many questions as I can - including their phone numbers and address.  I try to keep them on the line for at least 20 minutes or more if I can, since that's 20 minutes they aren't making a sale.

The multiple levels of having to press numbers are to reduce the number of people they talk to that aren't interested.  Because unlike hanging up, talking to the telemarketer is the WORST thing you can do to them.  They obviously don't care about laws on robocalls, to cell phone, announcing their business name, do not call lists, etc.  However, if you talk with them, waste their time, that costs them REAL MONEY.  If more people did this, it would kill the telemarketing business due to the massive numbers of bad leads of people that they are illicitly calling.

These morons called "again".  No use for them.  When will the government do something about these people?
