Have gotten multiple calls claiming that they are "James Smith" or "Attorney Samuel Bishop" (HEAVY ASIAN ACCENTS) and that I am being sued due to a Pay Day Loan that has not been paid back. They then threaten that the local police/sherriff is going to come arrest me, etc. I have filed a complaint with the FCC every time they make contact with me and the FCC is VERY aware of what this group is trying to do. In getting more information for the FCC complaint I tried to get an address so that I could mail them the money, and they refused to give one stating that I must buy a prepaid money pack and call them with all the Serial numbers so that they can get the funds. Today I asked "Samuel Bishop" where he was located and he stated 225 North 41st Street Springfield Oregon 97478. I Googled that address and found that it is a trailor park. Everyone who is bothered by these thieves should file a complaint with the FCC and/or any fraud prevention company.

I get a call from the same company at least three times a week.  I spoke to live reps to get my name off their lists and I press the key selection.  Nothing works.  I have been hung up on my multiple people.  I have been dealing with this crap for more than a year.

Do not take these calls. Let them go to voicemail then delete them. It will at least slow them down. Do not press any buttons.

They use calling cards which cannot be traced, so reporting a number is useless. Talking to them is a mistake. I have been getting these calls for 5 years, several a day. Since I took the FCC's advice and let them all go to voicemail, they have slowed down considerably.

The problem is too many idiotic people have been scammed and continue being scammed by them. So they are making money off them.

Something to keep in mind about all these continuing bothersome calls for surveys, so called charities and so called charity pickups despite asking them to remove you from their list:

Call centers have sprung up in my town that make use of the survey and the charity loophole around the do not call list; they have been a headache for law enforcement, emergency services, neighboring businesses and residential areas.  When I ask any patrolling officer in town about these call centers, they are quick to state their frustrations about the criminal activity that some of these call centers have brought into the area. Several law enforcement agencies regularly visit some of these call centers looking for warrant arrests etc.  I have heard from sources including from frustrated employees that work for these call centers complaining about the drug activity, vandalism of cars and neighboring businesses, break-ins and theft, drinking while on the job, smoke breaks are actually marijuana breaks, drunk driving, very dangerous driving, tons of tossed out litter of empty liquor containers, trash, food etc.  I?ve even heard that the mangers are also involved in criminal activities and have even preyed on their legitimate employees who are simply trying to eek out a living on horrible wages.  Also the operators are untrained in a very high turn around, poorly managed and dysfunctional work environment.

Also realize this when you call a companies? customer service line and get horrible service from the call center that?s been hired by the company.  One time while on a call with our bank?s customer service, the operator was so loopy that it required ending the call and calling again to try and get someone else to help, think about that when you call a companies? customer service and the conversation gets odd, off the wall and obtuse ? you may be talking to an operator that?s drunk or on something.  After 6 months of getting a different and wrong answer to our ongoing problem each time we called our bank?s call center, we gave up and closed the account.

With so little police left in our town due to cutbacks, they can?t always respond to vandalism and break-ins when it?s witnessed as they have their plate full responding to the major emergencies, this allows the criminal activity free reign, the neighborhood becomes the hood.  Some insurance companies require proof of private security patrols before they will honor a claim due to vandalism or theft leaving the neighboring businesses off guard and uncovered.  These businesses also have the added cost to hire private security, install security systems/monitoring, upgrade lighting etc.  Then there are the dangers and headaches to the nearby businesses employees such as their cars being vandalized or broken into.  Some businesses simply give in, pickup and move out of town.

One of my neighbors owns a call center and he requires that his operators are bonded, but I guess there?s no laws requiring this ? there should be.  Right now in my town it seems like anybody can start up a call center and hire questionable labor for cheap without much regulation.

I my efforts the past several years to try and get something done, I am most struck by the fact that there?s no real help, everyone is more worried about being sued than dealing with the obvious problem - you are on your own....

Allie,

I know passions are running high?, but PLEASE, use a little more formatting and whitespace, you're making us go blind trying to read your post!  I had to just skim what you said, so if I missed something, forgive me.?

Sadly, the FBI will not be able to help you.  If you had given them your info a police report would be a good idea to document the event in case you become a victim of identity theft.  But since you were too savvy for that, I think the best you can do is tell your story to others, and file a complaint at FTC.gov .

Incidentally, these guys are almost untouchable, and threats just egg them on.  Simply hang up on them and move on with your day.  It is especially important to "just hang up" if you are a woman.  Some of these bums are acculturated to seeing women in a very negative way, and as a result, many are so socially stunted that they get off on harrassing any woman they can get to talk to them. (Which outside of these phone calls is probably a VERY short list.)

I would also consider using one of the call blocking strategies discussed here in a post which I made replying to someone else:

Looks like they're now using a different phone number. We were getting calls from another number before I called the number back. I talked to the woman who had the phone and she had NO idea this was happening-you can't fake the surprise she had in her voice. With some cell phones you can add other phone numbers to them, effectively jacking someone's cell number and using it for this kind of s**t. We haven't gotten calls from that number since!

In order for it to say "Phone Scam", someone would have to have entered that in a lookup database that your phone company is using.

The way CID (caller id) works is that the call originator transmits the phone number (CNUM) but not the name (CNAM).  On the receiving end of things, your phone provider looks up the CNUM in a database, and the database gives them the CNAM information.  They add this information to the call data and send it on to you.

So, I am absolutely intrigued by what you are reporting.  Can those of you who have gotten the "Phone Scam" message on your please share what phone company you are using?

Thanks!

Callcentric is one of a number of VOIP providers.  They allow you to filter calls very effectively.  Their web site is: <www.callcentric.com> .  Some other providers have similar features.  More commercial providers, such as Vitelity, expect you to implement those things for yourself in your PBX.  The providers in the commercial end of things offer little to no handholding, so unless you are knowledgeable with respect to telephony, don't mess with them.

For the most part Callcentric is good to deal with, even for moderately competent newbies.

Don't waste your time reporting these guys. The gov never follows up with an investigation. Face it, the do not call list is just as big a farce as the businesses calling you.  Telemarketing bums know this and simply don't care if you threaten to report them.

I guess this company pays their phone bill.  I don't understand why the phone company just doesn't shut their phone off instead of hacking their Caller ID to show "Phone Scam"  This just shows how greedy the phone companies really are,

I must admit tho..I did get quite the laugh when it came up "Phone Scam" on my Id.

I found a great way to annoy these callers. The one that called me asked about lowering my credit card rate and I played along. They asked me first for the toll free number on my card and I told them I had to get my wallet from the other room. At that point, I just left the phone on the table until they got tired of waiting for me to come back. Taking up as much of their time as possible without giving them any info is the best revenge.

I get this call two or three times a week on my cell. This is the first time they have cussed me. But if I'm not busy I always press 9, I give them a different story each time, I get a different story each time. Today she wouldn't tell me where she was calling from. I continued to ask until she cussed me and hung up on me. I figure the longer I can waste their time the more people I may be saving from being scammed, and if I can get them to hang up on me, that just makes it more fun for me. You should have someone from a credit card company read all the fine print and then say, I'm sorry, could you repeat that? :0)

Received call from 5672484400 - first time ever saw this number call - my caller ID listed it as "Phone Scam"  so perhaps my phone company had this number flagged previously and identified it as a scam call. I did not answer the call.
